Join Volunteer Houston as we stuff backpacks for area students at Title 1 schools. There will be music, food, raffles, and lots of holiday spirit, along with a few surprises.
The program takes place on Saint Nicholas Day (December 5) and in the past delivered 8,000 backpacks filled with educational toys and books to Title 1 Pre K through 2nd graders. Last year, 24 schools in the Houston ISD and Bay Area participated in this program. A majority of these children's families are at or below the poverty line. For many of these students, the joy and excitement of receiving gifts from loved ones is not a part of their holiday tradition. Instead, they feel left out and disappointed after seeing holiday advertising. This program helps to give these children a chance to celebrate the holidays and learn the value of giving back to their community.
