Description

This is an amazing opportunity to make a difference in the life of a youth in foster care.

The Need

Before leaving foster care a youth:

  • Spent an average of 5 years in foster care
  • Changed placements 8 times within those 5 years
  • Attended at least 8 different schools due to changing placements
  • Is often behind on their grade level
  • Lacks a traditional support system to transition to adulthood
  • Lacks the skills and ability to live independently

Nationwide, only about half of the youth raised in foster care end up finishing high school; and less than 3% graduate from a 4-year college.

Across the U.S., youth raised in foster care typically achieve at lower levels academically and are at a higher risk of dropping out of school than their general population peers.

How You Can Help

The goal of the program is to help students become more efficient and effective both inside and outside the classroom. Academic Coaches will work with youth on organization, time management, study skills and social competencies. The program is integrated into the student’s existing schoolwork, along with traditional tutoring, supplemental enrichment and homework support.

How it Works

The program will take place in Residential Treatment Center's (RTC) located in the greater Houston area. Academic Coaches will work with youth, between the ages of 14-17, onsite during out of school hours.

Exact days and times will vary, depending on the facility. We will work with you on a schedule. Training and ongoing support will be provided. There will be a professional tutor onsite to provide additional support.
