ESL Instructor
Job Summary
Volunteer ESL Instructors work with adults who are learning the English language skills necessary for living and working in our community. Tutors work one-on-one and in a traditional classroom setting with individuals who desire to gain English fluency and literacy. Most students are limited-English speakers. Tutors will use published curriculum materials or create appropriate materials to meet the student’s listening, speaking, reading, and writing needs. ESL Classes hours will be held Tuesday-Friday from 12:30-2:00pm
Qualifications:
- Strong desire to improve the English language skills of students
- Sensitivity to cultural differences
- Patience, understanding, flexibility, and a positive attitude
- Ability to serve as a tutor/conversation partner for 3-5 hours per week for 3 months
- Fluency in English
- Second language fluency preferred (Spanish, Arabic, and Farsi) NOT REQUIRED
Responsibilities
- Complete required training and YMCA Background check
- Prepare ESL lesson plans and materials as is pertinent for each lesson
- Hold class consistently
- Be punctual (5-10 minutes early to prep class)
- Notify students and YMCA representative directly in the case that you are unable to hold class
- Provide regular feedback to the ESL coordinator on progress with your students
- Record hours of each class session and have the students sign in/out of class
- Communicate any personal needs or concerns to the ESL Coordinator in a timely and appropriate fashion
