The Nature Discover Center is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic individual who has a passion for science and nature to join our team. This paid internship position offers a great opportunity for first-hand experience with the implementation of a park master plan at a well-known local nature center, supportive educational functions, as well as exposure to park master planning committee meetings. This is an ideal internship for a career in park management.
The Nature Discovery Center is a nonprofit nature center and 4-acre nature park located in Bellaire, TX. We believe a personal connection to nature is an essential part of life. We ignite life-long curiosity, understanding, and respect for nature through education.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop a proficiency in habitat maintenance by sustaining different micro habitat gardens including native plant care
- Help develop educational/interpretive park signage
- Assist with educational community outreach programs in the park such as Family Fun Nights, Owl Prowls, and Park after Dark walks
- Assist in compiling park maintenance plan for different habitat zones
- Assist with coordination & supervision of park volunteers
Job Dimensions:
- 35 hours per week at $10 per hour for 8 weeks starting on or near May 31st, 2016
- One weekend day will be part of the regular weekly schedule
- Needs to be able to work a few evenings (over the course of the summer) in order to assist with educational and community outreach programs
Qualifications:
- Looking for an outgoing person willing to interact with both children and adults
- Ability to communicate effectively and express ideas both verbally and in writing
- Needs to have good research and planning skills
- Ability to spend time working outside in Houston summers, including heat & mosquitos
- Interest in nature education or biology
- Full-time college student (12 hours) who will be returning to school full-time in the fall
- Not related to any employee or permanent contractor for Shell or Volunteer Houston
- Not related to any employee or board member of the Nature Discovery Center
