Description

Join us in honoring and celebrating Martin Luther King Jr Day on Saturday, January 17th at 9:30 AM with a day of community service.

Dr. King was a civil rights leader whose most well-known areas of advocacy include civil rights and racial equality, voting rights, nonviolent resistance, economic justice, fair housing, and opposition to militarism and poverty. While we remember his legacy and hopefully be inspired by his efforts, we'll use this National Day of Service to give back to our community by beautifying and protecting the trees planted at Hutcheson Park in Fifth Ward.

Black United Fund of Texas and Houston Wilderness will provide gloves and tools for the mulching. Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes that can get dirty and bring a water bottle.

We will meet to the back side of the park near the paved walking trail. We suggest turning on Minden St off Lockwood Dr. Minden Street is the street right before the light at the 610 and Lockwood Dr intersection. We will park in the adject neighborhood streets. The closest entrance to the trail where we will be set up, is at the cross street of Minden St and Hoffman St. There is another entrance to the trail that connects to the parking lot of the nearby church -- St Francis of Assisi Catholic church.
