Teacher’s Assistant

Job Summary

Volunteer teacher’s assistants for YMCA International Services will work with teaching staff to facilitate classroom activities and participation. A teacher’s aid will work one-on-one with students to help them understand complex topics. The volunteer will help the teacher with any classroom needs not limited to grading, copying, conducting classroom activities, etc. ESL teachers assistants will be helping students improve their English skills. This includes, reading, writing and speaking English. 

Classes are currently being held on Zoom.    

Qualifications:

  • A strong desire to assist in the educational achievement of refugees and immigrants in the Houston Area
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to serve for 2-5 hours per week for a minimum of a month 

Responsibilities

  • Complete required training and YMCA Background check
  • Assist teachers in classroom related matters
  • Be consistent in attendance
  • Be punctual (5-10 minutes early)
  • Notify teacher if you will be unable to attend scheduled classes
  • Provide regular feedback to teacher regarding student progress
  • Record hours
  • Communicate any personal needs or concerns to YMCA staff in a timely and appropriate fashion
