ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Long-term Care Ombudsman Program is a federally mandated program wherein volunteers advocate for resident rights in nursing and assisted living facilities. It is jointly sponsored by city, county, and state agencies, with the lead agency being the University of Texas School of Nursing Center on Aging. Volunteers receive certification from the State of Texas, Department of Aging and Disabilities Services and are individually assigned to one nursing or assisted living facility. Volunteers have a wide flexibility in deciding whether the hours they put in would be on weekdays or weekends, during the daytime or early evening.
