 Fitness Instructor

Immediate Supervisor: E4L Program Director

Position Description:

(1) To facilitate a course in fitness and exercise for adults with Down syndrome. Responsibilities will include training, instruction, and coaching.

(2) To carry out the mission of the Education for Life program, which is to empower adults with Down syndrome to be as self-sufficient as possible in life, work, and relationships by providing opportunities for academic, social, vocational, personal, and creative growth.

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:30a.m.-5:30p.m. (can be flexible)

Preferred Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field or a combination of training and experience in a closely related field.
  • Experience in an adult setting with an emphasis on activity-based approaches that includes differentiation for persons with a broad range of disabilities or a combination of training and experience in a closely related field.
  • Training and/or experience in classroom management, differentiated instruction, curriculum and special education.
  • An interest in and desire to work with adults with Down syndrome in a fitness setting.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide the expertise, knowledge, and skills necessary to organize and conduct the daily activities of a fitness course.
  • Supervise and coach participants during the program day (including lunchtime) and during other scheduled activities/events as assigned.
  • Serve as a role model for and coach participants in understanding and exhibiting appropriate behaviors in all settings.
  • Maintain professional standards of the highest quality with regards to safety, instruction and classroom management.
  • Assist with designing, developing, and implementing age and ability appropriate instruction and activities that utilize resources, equipment, materials, and instructional strategies that are most effective for teaching fitness and which engage and motivate participants to learn and develop.
  • Assist with developing, teaching, modeling, and reviewing clear and concise rules, routines, procedures and expectations.
  • Assess individual levels of functioning to determine appropriate programming, instruction and training and provide differentiated instruction based on each individual's level of functioning and preferred learning modalities.
  • Attend in-service and staff meeting(s) as required to aid effective planning and programming.
  • Develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with families, guardians, and caregivers to support and improve participants' performance and development.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and respectful environment within the classroom and throughout the program and be a positive role model of appropriate and respectful interactions with students and staff.
  • Supervise program assistants and support staff as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and other program staff.
