Who We Are
Since 1971, the Citizens' Environmental Coalition connects our environmental community. A coalition of over 130 organizations, our mission is to foster education, dialogue, and collaboration on environmental issues in the Houston/Gulf Coast region. Our vision is an environmental community recognized as a vital part of the fabric of our society. We connect concerned citizens and community leaders with over 100 diverse environmental organizations. We share, support, and enhance their efforts and environmental advocates. We do this through our programs, which include forums that enhance understanding and publications that give a balanced perspective on environmental issues.
What We Do
The CEC works to connect our environmental community through publications and events.
Publications include:
- The Houston Environmental News Update, a weekly newsletter that is sent via email to about 5,000 people and which contains information about upcoming events, public comment opportunities, news summaries, local policy, and more.
- The Environmental Resource Guide, an online directory of CEC member organizations--the leading environmental nonprofits working in the Houston region--government contacts, hotlines, and other environmental resources.
- The CEC website, cechouston.org, contains a comprehensive calendar of environmental events and opportunities, green job listings, a newsletter archive, and much more. The website is supplemented by social media, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
Events include:
- The Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour, a two-night festival of short environmental films, usually that last Wednesday and Thursday in January at the River Oaks Theatre. The festival is part of the Houston Green Film Series, of which the CEC is the managing partner, which is held on the third Wednesday of most months at the Rice University Media Center.
- The Greater Houston Environmental Summit, a one-day networking and learning conference for staff, volunteers, and supporters of our environmental community.
- Earth Day Houston, in collaboration with many environmental partners
- A variety of networking and learning opportunities led by CEC and its partners, including seminars, candidate forums, workshops, and happy hours.
