Who We Are

FAM Houston is working for justice by building empowered community with refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians.

Through its overlapping and interconnected initiatives, FAM Houston is uniquely positioned to fulfill its mission as it roots Houstonians in community.

The organization (1) Builds mutually-supportive partnerships to connect communities with neighbors for work together; (2) Creates citywide collaboration among young adults for community and leadership development; (3) Empowers Central & East African Houstonians and an increasing diversity of immigrant constituents; and (4) Designs creative storytelling workshops and community events for all ages.

What We Do

Our Programs include:

  1. Shamba Ya Amani/The Farm of Peace - community farm in West Houston working for justice by feeding the community both body and soul. Run by resettled refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians with the hope that this agricultural endeavor will serve as a model for increasing food access and human connection.
  2. Women’s Empowerment Group (WEG) - a group for resettled refugee women to find mutual community with American women.
  3. Pamoja - relational program connecting newcomer families to Houstonian families to walk alongside and learn from each other.
  4. Youth Empowerment Group (YEG) - creating brave space for resettled youth to find community with American mentors and peers, build a network of support, and grow in knowledge, skills, and confidence while navigating life in Houston.
  5. Congregational Partners - providing pathways for faith communities to work with their neighbors by leveraging their assets and meeting the needs of their communities together.
