Volunteer: Earth Day Garden Volunteer – Hands-On Youth Program (Blackshear Elementary)

Join us for a hands-on Earth Day Garden Experience supporting students at Blackshear Elementary School in Houston’s Third Ward.

Volunteers must sign in at the school’s front office upon arrival. Please bring a valid ID and allow a few extra minutes for check-in.

Volunteers will help guide students (PreK–5th grade) through interactive garden learning stations focused on:

• Planting & Soil

• Compost & Sustainability

• Food Systems & Community Impact

Students will rotate through stations in small groups, and volunteers will support simple, engaging activities while helping maintain flow between rotations.

Additional support areas include:

• Goody bag distribution

• Fruit assembly and distribution

• General event support and transitions

No gardening experience is required. All instructions and materials will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to support youth education, sustainability, and community engagement in a fun, structured environment.

Judges will move between the teams' positions and are directly involved with reviewing the teams' performances.Liaisons will work with the Event Coordinator to help greet teams/teachers/ and direct them to their tables.  You will also assist as needed with various tasks associated with the Challenge.Monitors will assist with ensuring safety in the event space.  These are roaming roles and include managing traffic flow, supervision of youth, and security and safety issues.Lab Assistants will work with the Lab Coordinators to help students with hands-on experiments, manage traffic flow, and ensure safety of students.Administration team assists with a variety of general tasks.

Calling people of all faiths or no faith at all in Houston to care for our shared environment during Earth Month!  We will engage in hands-on environmental stewardship at the Willow Waterhole Conservation Reserve, with a variety of hands-on tasks suitable for all ages & skill levels. In observance of the Great American Clean-up, one of the activities will be a trash bash.  Meet at 11350 Ricecrest by the Oak tree in the park to sign in. Metro bus line 7 stops right nearby.  Tools/supplies will be provided. This event is organized by Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston, in partnership with the Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy.  The conservancy requires signing of a waiver to participate. Celebrate Earth Day with us by helping spruce up Woodland Park and Nature Preserve and Freed Art and Nature Park. At the same time, participate in the international event called Nature Challenge by taking photos of wildlife you see in the park. 

We'll collect trash and conduct trail maintenance (cut vines, spread mulch, mark trails).

We will provide gloves, trash grabbers, bags, tools, water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray. 

We recommend you wear long pants, closed toe shoes that can get dirty and a hat.

Volunteer: Garden Maintenance Event at the Bayland Center - April 25th

Join us for some time in nature, tending to our community garden and beautifying our community. We will clean up the garden beds, water the plants, pick any ripe food and clean up the property if there’s any trash around the area.

Black United Fund of Texas will provide garden gloves, trash bags, sunscreen and bug spray. Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes that can get dirty and bring a water bottle. Restrooms are available on-site in the Bayland Center. Parking is available on site and on nearby neighborhood streets. The Bayland Center (2606 Greg St) is centrally located near downtown.
