Volunteer: Caring Volunteers needed for Hospice Patients in the Missouri City Area

Volunteers are needed to spend time with our hospice patients.

We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patience, loving volunteers to spend time with our patients. They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

Our offices are in the Galleria and Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Missouri City Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. You can give these people a final dignity in their darkest hour.Thank you.

Volunteer: Join Our Volunteer Outreach Team

Become part of our completely volunteer-based outreach in high human-trafficking areas! This outreach is crucial to reaching trafficking victims and sharing the Human Trafficking National Hotline in places away from their captors or employers.

Key Responsibilities include:

-- Speaking to businesses on behalf of UAHT and victims on Saturdays as your schedule permits.

-- Displaying the National Human Trafficking Hotline number in restrooms, back offices, kitchens, and storefronts -- places away from victims' captors and/or employers.

-- Entering data after each outreach activity is completed.

All volunteers who want to become part of the Volunteer Outreach Team must complete the orientation and training. (This is separate from the Volunteer Orientation that every volunteer must attend.)

Volunteer Outreach Orientation will cover the key duties, processes, script, impact, and time commitment needed to confidently speak to businesses on behalf of UAHT and trafficking victims.

If weather permits, orientation and training will take place outdoors in a park setting, and when weather doesn't permit, we'll meet in an accommodating coffee shop.

After the Orientation and Training presentation, we will drive to nearby businesses, and each participant will get to train with an experienced volunteer who will share their knowledge of the process.

Volunteer: Host Red Sand Project to Raise Trafficking Awareness

Human trafficking occurs every day in our own communities. This crime continues to grow in the shadows of our society, and is one of the largest criminal industries in the world.

Victims of trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of sexual exploitation and/or forced labor.

Participants in Red Sand Projects fill cracks in sidewalks with red sand, a symbolic gesture that represents those individuals who fall through the cracks -- whether the cracks of our social, economic, and political systems or those of our personal consciousness.

We at UAHT want to highlight and remember the human trafficking victims who fall through those cracks in the greater Houston area, the very ones we make an effort each day to reach and help.

Our Red Sand Projects are meant to be volunteer-led and community-wide events, so if you'd like to host a project of your own -- whether it's in your neighborhood, your favorite park, your church, or an other public setting you'd like -- we strongly encourage you to do so!

Host a project with your friends and family or a school, community or social group!

Will you join us and host your own project?

We'll provide the red sand and flyers to hand out to passerby! (And if you want additional volunteer help with your project, we'll make every effort to provide it!)

Volunteer: Donate your used bike

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Read more: One bike donor's story

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico.

When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Volunteer: Caring Volunteers needed for Hospice Patients in the Bellaire Area

Volunteers are needed to spend time with our hospice patients.

We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patience, loving volunteers to spend time with our patients. They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

Our offices are in Clear Lake and the Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Bellaire Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. You can give these people a final dignity in their darkest hour. Thank you.

Volunteer: Interns Needed!

We are a nonprofit based in Houston focused on stabilizing the episodic and transitional homeless. Since 2016, we have been connecting individuals and families with Houston's many resources, community organizations, and homeless service providers to ensure stability, security, and success for our clients. In the last year, we have observed rapid growth in clients, partners, and community support. Despite the abundance of resources available to the homeless, many still face a large number of obstacles and challenges that often make even basic survival impossible. At The Village Connect, we have developed creative and alternative strategies for solving common problems affecting the episodic homeless population in Houston. Our focus on advocacy, goal setting, and game planning has culminated in a new service model which provides pathways for stability for our clients. However, in order to fully realize our model we need dedicated interns and volunteers that can help us reach our goals. We are looking to fill multiple positions. Most of the work can be completed online/remotely, and involves research, and calling organizations to find resources for our clients. If you are interested please let us know. You can also check out our website and apply at: https://www.thevillageconnect.org/copy-of-tvc-sponsorship-program-2020

Volunteer: In-Kind Donation Needs - Laptop Computers for Youth

Children 4 Tomorrow has transition to virtual therapy for youth due to the pandemic.  We are in need of computers (laptops) for these youth in order  to participate in the therapy.

The needs for our nonprofit organization are tremendous.  Our underserved communities are struggling to cope with the anxiety, depression, trauma and hopelessness that cause mental and physical illnesses. Its effect has been amplified due to the long duration of the pandemic quarantine in which none of us expected or planned for, and has caused havoc on the entire world.  Statistics now show that the issue of PTSD and trauma are on the rise in communities similar to ours due to the pandemic.

The program provides a virtual evidence-based protocol that provides mental health services in disaster aftermath crisis (such as trauma) and has fulfilled the mental health population’s needs since 2007.

For some of these kids to participate in the program they need a laptop computer for the 2 week 6 session duration.  We will be able to loan out computer before the sessions and pick them up when the sessions are completed and move to another group of youth.

Volunteer: Foster

Fostering a needy pet is a richly rewarding experience.  It's also an emotional, often difficult experience that isn't for everyone - but for those that can do it, it's an experience that won't soon be forgotten.  Houston Humane Society is always in desperate need of foster families, especially right now.  First, let's talk about what kinds of pets may need foster care: Sick and injured pets - Because HHS is an open admission shelter, meaning we do not turn away any animal, we often take in animals that are too sick to go up for adoption.  Some of them need a quiet place to recover as well as some additional care. Too young! - HHS often takes in animals that are simply too young, or may even still be nursing.  Sometimes they just need a couple of weeks, while others may need a few months. Behavior - Often an animal that has been neglected or may be too timid needs a couple of weeks with a foster to learn that being with people can be a good thing.  Sometimes pets at the shelter just need a break, and a foster home can give them a quiet place to de-stress.

We provide the medical care, you provide the loving home. We will work with you on what kinds of animals you can care for and your schedule.

environmental action.
