Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - Christia Adair ParkWe are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. Volunteer: Donate your used bikeYour unused bicycles hold the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your unused bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school. Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels. Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico. When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent. Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings. Volunteer: Japanese Garden VolunteersWant to have a serene yet fulfilling volunteer opportunity? Then come to the newly renovated Japanese Garden in Hermann Park to volunteer your time to maintain this jewel in the middle of Houston’s premier regional Park. The Japanese Garden was built in 1992, designed by Japanese landscape architect Ken Nakajima. Over the years the Garden slid into a Texas style garden, prompting the Hermann Park Conservancy to engage another renowned landscape architect from Japan, Terunobu Nakai, to advise the gardening team as to the finer details of Japanese style gardens. Utilizing plants appropriate to the Garden as well as to the Houston climate, Mr. Nakai and celebrated landscape gardener Hiroshi Iwasaki in 2007 began their annual visitations to the Garden to assist the park gardeners with the return of the Garden to its Japanese roots. 2016 saw the completion of their 10 th visit to the Garden with the development of the new dry stream garden, mimicking features of a stream, a beach and waterfalls to be accessed via a new entry gate on the Fannin side of the Garden. The Japanese Garden gardeners would appreciate your assistance with the garden's upkeep: maintaining the paths and entries, keeping the weeds at bay, trimming shrubs and trees in the Japanese style, raking pine needles and mulching shrub beds, deadheading spent blooms, and planting shrubs, plants, and ground cover. Volunteers will be working alongside and under the direction of the garden staff. Instructions will be given on site by staff. Workdays are each Thursday or 3rd Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Group volunteers (groups with less than 50 people, from churches, organizations, businesses, etc.) are welcome and should schedule a workday ahead of time by contacting Hermann Park Conservancy's volunteer department. Volunteer: FosterFostering a needy pet is a richly rewarding experience. It's also an emotional, often difficult experience that isn't for everyone - but for those that can do it, it's an experience that won't soon be forgotten. Houston Humane Society is always in desperate need of foster families, especially right now. First, let's talk about what kinds of pets may need foster care:
Sick and injured pets - Because HHS is an open admission shelter, meaning we do not turn away any animal, we often take in animals that are too sick to go up for adoption. Some of them need a quiet place to recover as well as some additional care.
Too young! - HHS often takes in animals that are simply too young, or may even still be nursing. Sometimes they just need a couple of weeks, while others may need a few months.
Behavior - Often an animal that has been neglected or may be too timid needs a couple of weeks with a foster to learn that being with people can be a good thing. Sometimes pets at the shelter just need a break, and a foster home can give them a quiet place to de-stress.
We provide the medical care, you provide the loving home. We will work with you on what kinds of animals you can care for and your schedule. https://www.houstonhumane.org/volunteer/foster-application Agency: Houston Humane Society Fostering a needy pet is a richly rewarding experience.
We will work with you on what kinds of animals you can care for and your schedule. https://www.houstonhumane.org/volunteer/foster-application Agency: Houston Humane Society Need Type: Volunteer Date: Is Ongoing Agency Requirement: >18 years old Zip Code: 77053 Allow Groups: No |

Volunteer: Invasives BewareOne of our goals at Jones Park is to support native wildlife by returning the forest to its native state. Historically, this area was a mix of prairies and woodlands with a more open understory. This ecosystem is dependent on disturbance, which at one time would have been provided by bison grazing and fires caused by either lightning, indigenous people, or settlers. The exclusion of these disturbances has created unregulated growth of invasive plant species that choke out native trees and grasses. By manually removing the overgrown and non-native plants, we can recreate the effect of natural disturbances like grazing and fire. This allows for regeneration of the historical understory and mid-story vegetation, which can then be supported by planting of additional native trees. Increasing native plant diversity leads to an increase in the diversity of insect species, which then results in an increase in the diversity of birds and small mammals, too. Join the Jesse Jones Park Eradicators to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitats of Jones Park. Invasives Beware! meets in the Nature Center at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month.
