Reaching Houston is hosting a summer camp called The Beauty of STEM and we are looking Summer Camp Assistants to help implement the program.  We are looking for high energy, fun staff to work with a diverse population of girls in grades 3 - 5.  Not a the teacher type?  We also need helpers to assist with materials, run errands, and complete clerical tasks before and during the camp.

Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection.

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. Of course, you will never actually be missing, but we always need new people to pretend to be missing. We will be enjoying nature, so dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes and comfortable pants. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a good book or electronic device to keep you busy during the down time. Come support the Lemonade Day festivities and assist PAIR students in creating and carrying out their small businesses! At this event, students will build their entrepreneurship and communication skills through a week of hands-on lessons. By the end of it, students will have finalized their lemonade recipes and business plans, culminating in a fun lemonade market. The camp will take place on July 6-10th (from 1:00 - 4:00 PM) and will be held at The Garden Community Center. Don’t miss out on the best event of the summer

Your time commitment will be from 12:30-4:30 PM (on July 6-9th), with potentially longer hours on July 10th for our final event. You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer. High schoolers must provide a reference.

What You’ll Do:

Volunteers help create a supportive, encouraging, and positive learning environment where students can continue growing academically, socially, and independently.

Volunteer Responsibilities Include:

Classroom Support:
Assist students during academic classes such as Reading, Math, Art, Social Skills, PE, and Music.

Individual Student Support:
Help students complete daily assignments, classroom tasks, and activities based on their individual needs.

Lunch & Enrichment Assistance:
Support students during lunch and enrichment hour while encouraging positive social interaction and participation.

General Program Support:
Help teachers and staff wherever needed to keep the day running smoothly and successfully.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and available for the full academic day from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

A successful volunteer should be patient, encouraging, dependable, and excited to work with our students. Experience working with individuals with special needs is a plus, but it is not required. A willing heart and positive attitude go a long way!

Join our Conversation Class and help adult learners build the language skills they need to thrive. 

As a classroom assistant, you’ll work alongside trained instructors to create a welcoming, supportive learning environment. Whether students are just beginning to learn the alphabet or practicing everyday conversations, your presence helps build confidence and connection. 

As a volunteer, you may:   

Your support will help refugees improve their English, strengthen their communication skills, and work toward life-changing goals—like getting a job, talking to a doctor, or helping their children with school. 

Our conversation class takes place every Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. 

No teaching experience required—just patience, encouragement, and a passion for helping others.

The BakerRipley Adult Education ESL tutor plays a key role in helping adult learners improve their English language skills, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. ESL tutors conduct one-on-one or group tutoring sessions to improve students' English proficiency. Tutors focus on key areas such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversational English. They also provide support in specific ESL topics like reading comprehension, writing practice, and listening exercises. Tutors assist with language skills necessary for job readiness, civic engagement, and further education.     

 What will I do? 

- Help students feel more confident using English 

- Help with speaking and pronunciation 

- Help with listening practices  Assist students with take home curriculum 

- Teach new words 

What’s required of me to be successful in this role? 

- High School Diploma or equivalent degree required. 

-Strong command of English Language, both written and spoken   

-Patience, cultural sensitivity and passion for assisting other with growing their proficiency of the English language

Schedule:

In-Person tutoring shifts are available at 1:30PM and 4:30 PM, for 1 hour, on Mon/Wed from June 1st - July 31st, 2026.

As an ESL Tutor, you will have the important task of instructing students who are non-native English speakers in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversational skills.

You will be paired with one student and meet with them virtually every week. You will help them complete a grammar workbook and practice reading short stories in English. Your role will be instrumental in helping these students enhance their English language skills, improve their communication abilities, and achieve their language proficiency goals.

A commitment of 2-4 hours per week is asked of volunteers.

The Role: Director of Saturday Programs
As the Director of Saturday Programs, you are the heartbeat of our weekly operations. You will oversee the delivery of our curriculum, manage a team of dedicated volunteers, and ensure that our Saturday sessions are high-energy, high-impact environments held weekly during the academic year at the Houston Food Bank.

Operational Leadership: Oversee the weekly execution of Saturday programming.

Team Management: Lead a small team of volunteer direct reports and oversee the Session Leads responsible for curriculum delivery.

In this role, you’ll make phone calls to clients to share information about our free civics classes, which help prepare adults for the citizenship exam. Your calls help ensure more people can access the resources they need to succeed.

As an Application Advisor, you play a crucial role in helping our students submit outstanding job applications. Using the Application Feedback Form and the guidelines provided, you will review, proofread, and offer detailed suggestions to ensure each application meets the highest standards of professionalism. Volunteers will receive 1-3 applications per session to review, helping clients craft "pristine" applications that set them up for success in their job search.

This volunteer opportunity occurs three times a month, aligning with each JSA class cycle, and is conducted entirely electronically. Applications are sent out on Wednesdays, and reviewed submissions must be emailed back by 8:00 AM the following Wednesday. This one-week turnaround is vital as student training programs operate on a tight schedule. By contributing your time and expertise, you’ll directly impact the confidence and success of our clients as they take their next steps toward meaningful employment.

As a Bus Buddy, you’ll ride alongside refugee students as they travel to important destinations like English classes, job training programs, or healthcare appointments. You’ll teach them how to: 

Use the Transit / Map app to plan and track their route

Understand the bus route they will be taking to their class

Pay to get on the bus and request to get off at a bus stop

For many refugees, learning how to use public transportation is a vital step toward rebuilding their lives. Your support can open the door to opportunities, connections, and independence. 

No experience needed—just a friendly attitude and a love for helping others.

We are looking for a detail-oriented and reliable volunteer to support our team in preparing for our REED Job Search Accelerator (JSA) classes.

We’re inviting volunteers to join us for our monthly Second Saturday Garden Day at Blackshear Elementary in Third Ward, Houston.

This ongoing initiative supports the development of a school-based garden that provides hands-on learning opportunities, promotes sustainability, and increases access to fresh food for students and their families.

Volunteers will assist with activities such as planting, garden maintenance, bed preparation, harvesting, and general beautification of the space. No prior gardening experience is required, just a willingness to learn and contribute.

In need of a Resource Navigator to help build our resource database. Looking for someone willing to commit to the time they are able to do. We are lookin for 5-10 hours per week. Our organization is in its early stages and we are in dire need of help to compile a list of the available free or subsidized resources in Houston in one Database. This database will be used to navigate our clients towards the necessary community resources if requested.  Must be friendly, empathetic, have a computer/laptop, and great communicator as this volunteer will interact with clients. 

In need of a Community Program Specialist to help with facilitating our community programs. Looking for someone willing to commit to the time they are able to do. We are lookin for 5 - 10 hours per week. Our organization is expanding and we are in dire need of help. Our programs include Maternal Wellness Circle, Motherhood Canvas, and our soon to launch our Teen mom program. The programs are held in multiple locations across the greater Houston area and volunteer must be willing to travel to the location of choice to facilitate the programs. You will receive the necessary training and materials. This is for someone who loves to teach, and care about people's wellbeing. 

As a part of our mission to build community and increase book access, we’ve begun connecting stewards with their local booksellers through the LFL-Friendly Bookseller’s Directory. A crucial piece of this project is to reach out and ask booksellers to offer benefits to stewards, such as discounts, book donations, or event space discounts for meetups. We need your help to share information with booksellers about how they can support their local LFL stewards!

How to get started: Sign up on our volunteer website. If it's your first time volunteering with Team LFL, you will be asked to create an account in our volunteer hub. After you register, you will be instructed to compile a list of local booksellers you’d like to visit and submit it to us. After we receive your list, we will send you a packet of materials to distribute while you’re visiting the booksellers . 

Purpose: By helping connect Little Free Library stewards to local booksellers, you are helping to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access. 

Responsibilities:

Visit local booksellers (5 minimum, but can visit as many as you'd like) to drop off information packet on the bookseller’s directory

Be polite and courteous when visiting the bookseller - wait in line to speak to a staff member, don’t be pushy, encourage them to review the information and contact LFL with any questions.

Create a list of local booksellers that you plan to visit. 

Check the existing map to see which booksellers are already listed - you don’t need to go to any that are already listed!

Use booksellers’ associations (MIBA, CALIBA, etc.) to find booksellers near you (if you don’t already know them!)

Visit bookstores, use the provided Excel template to record who you’ve visited, and submit sheet to us via Givepulse.

The Mission Success Mentorship Program is designed to connect students with mentors who provide guidance, career exposure, and life skills development. The program emphasizes strong, authentic relationships by incorporating structured mentorship meetings and low-stakes activities for engagement.

Commitment

Meet with your mentee (in-person) approximately 10 times per year. Meetings will occur sometimes through team-wide Mission Success events (mentor events, practices, tournaments, etc.) and other times independently. We do ask that you try to attend Mission Success organized events whenever possible. Most importantly, we hope that you actively take a supportive role in your mentee’s life through regular communication. If you are ever having trouble getting in touch with your mentee, please let a Mission Success staff member know.

Parent Communication

Check in periodically with your mentee's parent(s) about how your mentee is doing. This will prove valuable to your relationship with your mentee and help to build a strong relationship with their parents as well. Staff Communication Mentors shall complete this brief check-in form every 2 months to report on their mentoring relationship. Mentors are welcome and encouraged to communicate regularly with Program Staff aside from the formal check-in form.

Regular Check-Ins

Mentors shall actively take a supportive role in their mentee’s life by asking about school performance and grades, wishing luck before tournaments, sending birthday cards, etc. This can be in the form of texts, phone calls, emails, mail, and meet ups during program or at a local coffee shop. Mentors should ideally call or email their mentees twice per month.

A Long-Term Relationship

Being a mentor is a long-term commitment (one-year minimum) and bears significant responsibility. Plan to mentor your mentee through their middle, high school, and even college years. The mentoring program lasts as long as a child is in Mission Success or as long as the mentor lives in the Houston area. Previous mentor relationships have lasted through the middle, high school and even college years of our student-athletes!

Safety

All mentors must complete a background check through Sterling and VIPS after signing the mentorship agreement. Mission Success staff are mandatory reporters in the state of Texas. If you have any reason to believe your mentee is in danger, notify a staff member immediately.

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will help provide various enrichment needs to our dogs (think kongs and nose work!). Enrichment volunteers are essential to help improve the daily lives of our dogs at the shelter.* Our Behavior volunteer program is a five-step program, and you'll start out as a BV1 volunteer (behavior volunteer - level 1). Our behavior program is truly one-of-a-kind. You'll learn such much, like how animals communicate, different types of enrichment, how to read body language, learning theory, and so much more. 

Current Behavior Dog Volunteer shifts from from 2-5PM every day - including weekends.

After volunteers have completed 12 hours of volunteering they are eligible to assist with our events. They help set up the events, manage animals brought to the event, answer questions from the public and help breakdown afterward.

Volunteer Career Coaches aim to help individuals secure long-term employment, advance their careers, or transition professionally.

Coaches will assist with:

Time: Coaches are asked to commit to regular volunteer service for this opportunity.

Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate enjoys coaching, motivating and supporting others in search of employment. Experience in recruiting, not-for-profit, social work, management or motivational speaking is helpful for this position. In conjunction with our mission, coaches are passionate about serving others and are willing to offer spiritual guidance with a Christian perspective.

Next Steps: This position requires a pre-screening through both the Volunteer and Programs Departments, a successful background check and completion of an online, 2-hour training course. Additionally, prospective volunteer coaches will have live training/shadowing sessions with a WorkFaith Career Coach

Proofread, review, and edit the first draft of student job applications.

As an Application Advisor, you play a crucial role in helping our students submit outstanding job applications. Using the Application Feedback Form and the guidelines provided, you will review, proofread, and offer detailed suggestions to ensure each application meets the highest standards of professionalism. Volunteers will receive 1-3 applications per session to review, helping clients craft "pristine" applications that set them up for success in their job search.

This volunteer opportunity occurs three times a month, aligning with each JSA class cycle, and is conducted entirely electronically. Applications are sent out on Wednesdays, and reviewed submissions must be emailed back by 8:00 AM the following Wednesday. This one-week turnaround is vital as student training programs operate on a tight schedule. By contributing your time and expertise, you’ll directly impact the confidence and success of our clients as they take their next steps toward meaningful employment.

We are looking for individuals that can help participants with different art activities, from drawing and painting to pottery. Help newly arrived refugees in Houston gain the skills they need to get around the city independently. 

As a Bus Buddy, you’ll ride alongside refugee students as they travel to important destinations like English classes, job training programs, or healthcare appointments. You’ll teach them how to: 

Read and understand METRO bus maps and schedules 

Use the Transit app to plan and track their route 

Purchase and use bus passes with ease 

For many refugees, learning how to use public transportation is a vital step toward rebuilding their lives. Your support can open the door to opportunities, connections, and independence. 

No experience needed—just a friendly attitude and a love for helping others. 
We’ll provide training and support to get you started.
