Our offices are in the Galleria and Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Tomball Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. Encompass is a hospice service serving the Houston Area. We have an office in Clear Lake. 

As a volunteer, you would allow our teams of hospice care specialists to spend more of their focus on our patients during their darkest hour. You would assist staff in a wide range of important duties such as data entry, filing, copying, mailings, and other essential functions required of hospice care. This service would take place in our office during normal business hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Why eleventh-hour volunteers?

Our goal is to aid the patients in a peaceful transition during their final days/hours by creating a comfortable environment with the help of compassionate volunteers. Volunteers would be asked to provide the most basic needs of human contact whether through touch or listening. Physical presence reassures the patient that they are not alone and reinforces the concept of no one should die alone.

What is expected from an eleventh-hour volunteer?

There is no set time for death, at Encompass we want to ensure that our patients have a companion during the final 24 to 48 hours of their life. Volunteers should be willing to be flexible with their time to provide last minute companionship to the patient. As a volunteer you will only need to be prepared to listen to the patient while they talk about their condition without offering medical information or advice. The volunteer performs the role of a sitting vigil during the patient’s final hours.

As a volunteer it is important to note that you will be watching the patient take their last breath. It takes courage and unparalleled love of your fellow man to witness the last hours of another human being. Just keeping a positive attitude and a pleasant expression mean a lot during the final hours to make it a comfortable experience for the patient.

We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patience, understanding volunteers to spend time calling family members of patients who have passed. Volunteers would call from their own homes and listen to people who might need someone to talk to.

These people have lost someone close to them and might need someone to listen to them. Death affects us all differently so they themselves might not know they need someone to talk to until it is presented to them.  

Our offices are in the Galleria and Woodlands area but once trained you would only need to touch base with the office to get new clients or get support.

Due to the nature of hospice each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with clients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these people who have lost someone is beyond measurable. You can give these people an ear to talk to and a reason to keep going.

These patients are going through a difficult time and might want or need someone to listen to them. Their final days could be filled with laughter and conversation, history and stories, sadness and acceptance, with your help.

YMCA International Services is currently looking for volunteers to help in our warehouse, food pantry, and assist with picking up donations across the Houston area. 

Responsibilities

 Friday's 9am-12:30pm

Assist donations manager in acquiring, storing, and organizing all new donations given to YMCA International Services. Assist with giving out food to our refugee and immigrant clients. Help our clients fill out necessary documents and assist in keeping track of donated items. Transport donations to apartments so when the families arrive in Houston they have something they can call their own.

Communication/ Marketing VISTA duties

VISTA member will assist Community Relations Director with development of internal and external communications. The Girls Empowerment Network is seeking volunteers to co-facilitate weekly programs with girls starting August 2019.

The mission of the Girls Empowerment Network (GEN) is to ignite the power in girls by teaching them the skills to thrive and believe in their ability to be unstoppable. GEN equips girls in grades 3-12 with the skills they need to navigate girlhood; helps girls foster healthy, supportive bonds with one another; and surrounds girls with relatable role models who provide support, inspiration, and guidance.

Volunteering with Girls Empowerment Network Weekly Programs.

Once a week, volunteers will facilitate interactive sessions which incorporate a research-based curriculum designed exclusively for GEN. With support from the GEN Program Manager and volunteers, GEN equips girls in grades 3-12 with the skills they need to navigate girlhood. 

Volunteer Description

As a GEN volunteer, you will attend weekly sessions at a local school and act as a co-facilitator alongside the GEN Program Manager, all while forming encouraging and caring relationships with the girls in the program. Volunteers lead ice breakers, activities, facilitate discussions, and provide assistance to the GEN Program Manager on-site.

Join our Houston Volunteer Team! We are seeking translators/interpreters for the Guatamalen languages of the Mayan Dialects: Kaqchikel, Q'eqchi', or K'iche'. If you would like to translate, please come join us at a volunteer orientation!

Most translation opportunities are during business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. Occasionally, we have opportunities on the weekend. As a volunteer, you don't have to be a permanent resident or citizen. 

We are also willing to pay you as a contractor. As a contractor, you must have legal status in the U.S.

There is a pre-developed curriculum of about 15 topics. The class is taught off a picture-based, pre-designed curriculum of 12-15 topics, ranging from health, hygiene, employment, public transportation, Houston culture, safety, education, community resources and cultural adjustment. Training will be provided. You don't have to speak another language in order to facilitate the classes. If needed, RST will provide a translator.

Languages are a plus! Volunteers are expected to serve about three months. We are flexible to work with your schedule.

Assess current SharePoint / Office365 implementation and work with Tony’s Place to maximize its effectiveness and train Staff and potentially board members in getting the most use out of the product(s).

ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION

Ronald McDonald House Houston (RMH Houston) offers a home away from home providing care, compassion, and hope to families with seriously ill children being treated in Texas Medical Center member institutions.

ROLE PURPOSE

RMH Houston inside Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) offers volunteer positions in both the House (for overnight stays and naps) and family lounges (providing snacks and other resources). The TCH House and Lounge Volunteers maintain the RMH Houston in TCH and   provide compassionate support for those who have children in the Neonatal Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care Units of TCH.

LOCATION

SCHEDULE

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are seven days a week, 9 am - 12 pm, 12 pm - 3 pm, 3 pm - 6 pm, and 6 pm - 9 pm.

All volunteer drivers will go through a volunteer orientation, background check, drug screen, road test and complete defensive driving training provided by The Blood Center to ensure the safety of the volunteers as well as the products. Volunteer drivers are asked to commit to 2-4 driving shifts per months with a four hour per shift minimum. Volunteer drivers will receive materials about the program and its policies, essential contact information, a T-shirt, and a personalized volunteer badge. Their shift will begin at the Hospital Services department, where they will sign in and receive their vehicle and route assignments.

Is it possible to volunteer for only a couple of months/just during the summer? Yes

Do you offer court-appointed community service opportunities? At this time, the Houston SPCA does not fulfill court-appointed community service hours.

If my child is under 16, can they volunteer at the Houston SPCA if I accompany him/her? Because of the type of work our volunteers do for us, we do require each volunteer to be at least 16 years of age at the time of application. We do however offer a summer camp for young people ages 8-14 years old, and a Critter Camp Crew counselor program for kids age 16 and older. We also have service projects available for individuals or scout groups. 

Can I be a volunteer if I have a criminal record? Everyone is encouraged to apply. Your candidacy may be declined depending on the offense. These are discussed on a case by case basis once the results of your application and background screening have been received.

Encompass is a hospice service serving the Woodlands area, our job is to take care of the patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Doctors, nurses, chaplains, social workers and many others work closely together to make sure those needs are met. To meet all of those needs requires a great deal of time and resources.

As a volunteer, you would allow our teams of hospice care specialists to spend more of their focus on our patients during their darkest hour. Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center has had over 250 bird species sighted within its boundaries! We have birds during all seasons and many migratory species may stop in.

In our restored prairie and wetlands, a seasonal bird survey is conducted to monitor the different species that are found. Once a month from September to May, we are looking for volunteers to help assist with this very important project.

All skill levels are welcomed; from advanced birders to beginners. On-spot training will be provided.

3ABF Care Team Volunteer Overview

About Us

3 "A" Bereavement Foundation (3ABF) offers a wide range of bereavement services for low-income and working poor in the Houston Metropolitan Area. Since inception, we have assisted almost 10,000 families heal from the loss of their loved one through emotional and financial support. 3ABF is the only organization in Houston offering comprehensive bereavement families and we are seeking volunteers to meet the demand of families in need.

Responsibilities

At 3ABF, we stay connected with bereaved families for up to 9 months after our initial contact to assess the need for additional services and/or simply to check in on them. As part of our Care Team, you would support us in providing aftercare services to bereaved families by giving them a call, mailing greeting cards and mailing CareNote pamphlets.

Volunteering on our Care Team is easy! Simply call the individuals you support once or twice per month and mail them a greeting card on significant dates like birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. All of this can be done from your home on your schedule. We will provide all of the supplies that you need!

3 "A" Bereavement Foundation (3ABF) offers a wide range of bereavement services for low-income and working poor in the Houston Metropolitan Area. Since inception, we have assisted almost 10,000 families to heal from the loss of their loved one through emotional and financial support. 3ABF is the only organization in Houston offering comprehensive bereavement families and we are seeking volunteers to meet the demand of families in need.

Responsibilities

- Help spread the message of the important work of 3ABF and our impact in the community
- Maintain an understanding of the history, mission, and impact of 3ABF
- Provide input into the development of our annual campaign, including direct mail, personal solicitation, and events fundraising
- Engage in the execution of all aspects of fundraising campaigns, including marketing efforts, personal solicitation, and the acknowledgment process
- Help plan and implement campaigns to solicit funds from the Houston community and beyond
- Help to identify new prospects and potential funders
- Report activities and communicate with the Program Manager
- Communicate as appropriate with the Executive Director

Commitment

- Minimum of 6 months
- Participate in a monthly committee conference call (first Saturday of every month)
- Be on time and be responsible during assigned events and meetings; notify 3ABF if you are not able to attend committee or event

Requirements

- Must be 21 or older
- Display a positive working attitude and strong work ethic
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Belief in the importance of the mission of 3ABF
- Good English speaking & writing skills; Bilingual English & Spanish speakers especially needed!
- Complete and submit the 3ABF Volunteer Application Form and related forms (the latter will be done on-site as part of orientation)

- Attend Speakers Bureau Training
- Participate in a monthly committee conference call (first Saturday of every month)
- Help spread the message of the important work of 3ABF and our impact in the community
- Represent 3ABF at a variety of community events by verbally presenting facts about 3ABF and our support of bereaved families
- Maintain an understanding of the history, mission, and impact of 3ABF
- Complete a brief evaluation following speaking engagements
- Have fun and help heal lives through the sharing of accurate information regarding bereavement and the impact of 3ABF

Commitment

- Display a positive working attitude and strong work ethic
- Minimum of two speaking engagements per year, as opportunities are available
- Be on time and be responsible during assigned shift; after three (3) no-shows or cancellations within 2-hours of shift, volunteers will be dismissed from the program

Requirements

- Must be 21 or older
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups of people
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Possess reliable transportation
- Available to attend events during the weekday, evening, or weekends
- Belief in the importance of the mission of 3ABF
- Good English speaking & writing skills; Bilingual English & Spanish speakers desired
- Complete and submit the 3ABF Volunteer Application Form and related forms (the latter will be done on-site as part of orientation)
- No experience necessary!

Reconnection Workshops are free and confidential group sessions offered by the American Red Cross to help those facing challenges in returning to family life, their jobs and living again in their communities after military deployments.  During the pandemic, these courses are offered in a virtual format.
