Our clients are refugees and recent immigrants, so many have a hard time knowing what to do in order to navigate their way through our healthcare system. Our clients often struggle with the process of scheduling a doctor appointment, getting their prescriptions filled, getting lab work done, etc. A few of our clients suffer from poor health literacy skills. Health literacy is the ability to read, understand, and effectively use basic medical instructions and information. YMCA International Services is currently seeking community volunteers, nursing students, or pharmacy technicians to help educate our clients on certain aspects of our health care system.

A few duties of the Health System Volunteer Navigator will include showing clients how to refill a prescription over the phone and/or accompany the client to pick up their medication. You will show client’s how to state one’s name and DOB in order to pick up the medicine. If necessary, show bus route if the pharmacy is too far from home. Training will be provided. 

As a Health System Volunteer Navigator, you will be giving our clients the ability to see their doctor, order their prescriptions, and learn how to use public transportation all on their own. Self-sufficiency is key for our clients and you will be a huge part of their path to that goal. Volunteer with YMCA International Services to make an impact on the lives of refugees and newly arrived immigrants.

Office Support

In preparation for our Girl +1 event, we need help stuffing bags, getting materials ready and assisting in small tasks to prepare for the workshop on December 2nd. 

Girl + 1 is a half-day workshop in which girls and their adult female caregivers learn about different aspects of their health. We will be providing health screenings, great speakers, interactive presentations, breakfast, goodie bags, door prizes and much more to ensure that everyone who participates walks away feeling empowered to take charge of their health and well-being.

The Mercer Society maintains several greenhouses that are used primarily to grow plants for the annual March Mart plant sale. Working with the grower and TMS volunteers, you may be making cuttings, potting or repotting plants, maintaining potted plants in the greenhouse and more, depending on the need. This is an "in the dirt" experience where you may be working inside or outside. TWST4GIRLS is interviewing potential mentors for youth girls ages 11-17. iEducate is building a system for school districts to engage college and high school youth within the classroom in order to close achievement gaps at a foundational level. During the school year, we match college students with neighboring elementary schools, placing them alongside teachers to support differentiated instruction.

We have a team of current and former educators & HR professionals who conduct our screening and face-to-face interviews, and would love for you to join us! If you are available on Saturdays for a few hours between 10AM-4PM, you will be assigned candidates to interview and evaluate. We will provide the training and rubric to ask the appropriate questions and look for key competencies.

The Need

Transitioning into adulthood is challenging for any teen, but especially for youth aging out of foster care. Many lack the resources, skills, and plans needed for independence, putting them at higher risk of dropping out, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, or involvement with the justice system. A caring adult can make all the difference.

How You Can Help

Transition Coaches are trained volunteers who guide foster youth (ages 14+) nearing adulthood. Coaches help youth create transition plans, explore education and employment options, and provide support as they navigate independence.

How It Works

Volunteers meet with their matched youth at least twice a month, in the youth’s placement or another public setting, on a schedule they set together. Youth live across greater Houston, and training and ongoing support are provided.

Requirements

Coaches commit for at least one year, complete an application, interview, and background check, and attend orientation/training (offered monthly, alternating daytime and evening).

Volunteer as a Stylist with Career Gear Houston!

Stylists play a key role in transforming the lives of our clients by ensuring they look and feel their best for job interviews and the workplace. As a Career Gear Stylist, you’ll do more than just pick out clothes—you’ll help build confidence and set men up for success!

What Stylists Do:

We provide styling guidelines and training, so while an understanding of business attire is preferred, it’s not required. You'll learn how to select the right attire for various vocations and industries.

This is a part time, seasonal position and the main responsibilities will be monitoring and assisting volunteers in the feeding and housing needs of our animals. Intern Supervisors will also be working closely with critical and compromised animals and providing limited medical care to them. Candidates must be willing to comply with TWRC policies and procedures.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the completion of the tasks in the Animal Care Program.

· Training and on-going mentoring of volunteers in the program.

· Communicate closely with the Assistant Managers and other Shift Supervisors.

· Attend mandatory training sessions

· Attend Shift Supervisor meetings as needed.

· Inform Animal Care Manager of any disruptions in the room that need immediate attention.

· Responsible for admitting animals into the program.

· Keep correct tracking of animals and their paperwork during their stay in the program.

· Responsible for setting up special caging and preparing diets for the squirrels.

· Responsible for logging and administering medications to the animals.

Qualifications

· Flexible Schedule

· Willing to work weekdays and weekends

· Respectful and calm demeanor with a positive attitude.

· Leadership and people skills to motivate volunteers to complete tasks.

· Team builder with the ability to lead by example.

· Patience in teaching and tact with all age groups preteen to senior.

· Be a quick learner, able to multi-task, follow directions and able to prioritize.

Time Commitment

· Shift Supervisor training

· Additional medical management training of the animals we care for

· Approximately 10 week commitment per season, longer if interested.

· No specific number of hours per week is guaranteed, but generally 20 can be expected

Babysitters and Tutors are needed to assist with refugee children. Fluency in a second language such as Arabic, Farsi, and Swahili are a plus.

Babysitters are needed for Tuesday afternoons, 1-2 and 2-3 p.m.

Tutors are needed for a weekly commitment. Mostly during weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

The City Support Volunteer will assist in providing internal support for the Lemonade Day National team as well as external support to Lemonade Day cities. This position will require excellent organization skills, basic technological skills, attention to detail and a willingness to provide assistance to others.

Volunteers are needed for our next See to Succeed initiative will be taking place the week of April 16-19, 2018.  Through this program, we provide eyewear at no cost to children in need. We need volunteers who can serve at least one day and will be glad to make a difference in children's lives!

Background on See to Succeed:

Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS)has partnered with University of Houston, San Jacinto College, Kids Vision For Life (The Essilor Foundation) and the Berkley Eye Center to provide free vision exams and eyewear to children and youth in need.

These vision exams are held at a clinic centrally located in Houston and approximately 200-400 children are bused in each day from area schools around the city to attend. We are need of volunteers to help guide and escort the children through the clinic and ensure each child is safe and receives services.

* Lunch, snacks and t shirts will be provided for volunteers
