Volunteer: 2026 Plastic Free July: Kuhlman Gully Cleanups
What we throw away doesn’t go away
Even the smallest pieces of trash can have a ripple effect on marine life, communities, and future generations. As the second most productive estuary ↗ in the United States, Galveston Bay supports both wildlife and the people who depend on it. To help stop trash before it gets into the Bay, Galveston Bay Foundation is installing trash traps at three inland bayou sites. International soccer games being hosted in Houston this summer may impact the trash that enter our bayous. That is why we are hosting two cleanups and accompanying surveys on July 16th & 30th as a part of the regional Trash Free Gulf initiative ↗ during Plastic Free July ↗. We hope you will join us in cleaning up and monitoring trash levels to measure the impact. As a community cleanup volunteer, you and your team will: Use gloves, trash grabbers, buckets, and bags to collect and remove litter from the shoreline Participate in a litter audit Work in tandem at a site where we are conducting a Marine Debris Survey, helping remove debris after the survey has been completed in random transects If you encounter them, help remove small plastic pellets called nurdles, which are especially common near the check-in areaNo experience is necessary. We will show you what to do. Restrooms are available nearby at the park. Be prepared to stand and walk for over an hour. Come prepared with a reusable water bottle and appropriate outdoor clothing. NOTE: All minors must be accompanied by a registered parent/guardian or approved chaperone over the age of 18. Parents or guardians must register and complete a waiver for participants under age 18. By removing marine debris from the shoreline, you help protect wildlife, improve water quality, and keep Galveston Bay healthier for people and nature. Site Map & Where to Meet Why This Work MattersDebris poses a serious threat to this ecosystem. Trash that enters the Bay can: Entangle or be ingested by wildlife Damage fragile coastal habitats Block oxygen from reaching the water Release harmful chemicals that impact animals and peopleVisit onelessstraw.org ↗ to make your pledge to use less plastic this July. Volunteer: Marine Debris Survey: Seawolf Park
Track the tide. Tally the debris.
Join Galveston Bay Foundation and our partners at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to document the debris that reaches our shoreline. This is more than a cleanup. This is community science and the data you help collect will tell the story of where debris comes from and how it moves through the Bay. As a Marine Debris Survey Volunteer, you will: Collect and remove trash from designated shoreline survey plots Help measure and mark survey areas using simple field tools Sort and identify debris by type to support NOAA data collection Record findings alongside staff and trained volunteers Assist with loading and unloading suppliesNo experience needed. Staff will guide you through each step of the survey process. This role involves walking on sand, mud, or uneven shoreline terrain while working outdoors. Dress for the weather and bring water. Minors welcome. Volunteers under 18 must be registered with a parent or guardian and accompanied by an adult chaperone. Your effort helps turn today’s data into tomorrow’s solutions for the Bay. Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - Tom Bass ParkWe are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out! You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. Of course, you will never actually be missing, but we always need new people to pretend to be missing. We will be enjoying nature, so dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes and comfortable pants. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a good book or electronic device to keep you busy during the down time. All high school students or older are welcome to participate. Feel free to view our website to see what we are about: www.AlphaSar.org. A confirmation email will be sent after sign-up to confirm your volunteer slot. A waiver will be attached. Any participants under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult during their volunteer time. Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - Bear Creek Pioneers ParkWe are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. Volunteer: Volunteer bike mechanic -- put your skills to workIf you know how to fix a bike, Freewheels Houston needs you. Our volunteers repair donated bikes that go to refugees, veterans and young people from low-income families in Houston — people who depend on these bikes to get to work and school. Last year our mechanics repaired and distributed more than 640 bikes. The bottleneck is always skilled hands. Our shop is well equipped with tools, parts and a repair checklist developed with input from a master bike technician. If you know most bike systems — drivetrain, shifting, brakes, wheels and tires, handlebars and steering — you will be repairing bikes on your first visit. If you're still building your skills, our experienced volunteers are generous with what they know. Before your first shift, please complete our waiver: https://www.freewheelshouston.org/waiver. A parent or guardian must complete this waiver on behalf of a volunteer younger than 18 years of age. Agency: Freewheels Houston If you know how to fix a bike, Freewheels Houston needs you. Volunteer: Bike shop volunteer -- no experience necessaryYou don't need to know anything about bikes to volunteer at Freewheels Houston. We will put you to work cleaning bikes, fixing flats and helping around the shop. Each time you come back, you will learn something new. A lot of our most experienced mechanics started exactly where you're starting — with no idea how much they'd love this. The work has an immediate payoff. People come to the shop every weekend to pick up a bike that will get them to work, school and the grocery store. You will see that happen. Registering in advance helps us prepare for your visit and makes sure we have your contact information for updates and communications.
