Volunteer: Interns Needed!

We are a nonprofit based in Houston focused on stabilizing the episodic and transitional homeless. Since 2016, we have been connecting individuals and families with Houston's many resources, community organizations, and homeless service providers to ensure stability, security, and success for our clients. In the last year, we have observed rapid growth in clients, partners, and community support. Despite the abundance of resources available to the homeless, many still face a large number of obstacles and challenges that often make even basic survival impossible. At The Village Connect, we have developed creative and alternative strategies for solving common problems affecting the episodic homeless population in Houston. Our focus on advocacy, goal setting, and game planning has culminated in a new service model which provides pathways for stability for our clients. However, in order to fully realize our model we need dedicated interns and volunteers that can help us reach our goals. We are looking to fill multiple positions. Most of the work can be completed online/remotely, and involves research, and calling organizations to find resources for our clients. If you are interested please let us know. You can also check out our website and apply at: https://www.thevillageconnect.org/copy-of-tvc-sponsorship-program-2020

Volunteer: Weekly Delivery of Meals on Wheels in Harris County

Hello, Houston! :)

We need your help, delivering a daily hot meal (weekdays) and brief, friendly visit to homebound seniors, throughout Harris County. We have needs in areas, including Midtown/Downtown, the Heights, Energy Corridor, Katy, Barker Cypress, and more. We are also looking for additional Hubs/Sites, so please let us know if your faith community, business, civic group, etc. is open to learning about what it means to be a Meals on Wheels Site. :-)

Responding to this need will register you, as an individual, for becoming a Meals on Wheels Delivery Volunteer. After completion of your New Volunteer Training, we can share with you where we most need volunteer support and you can choose your delivery area, from those needs. All of the seniors on any MOW route live close to one another and a volunteer route typically delivers to 12-15 homes, between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM, on your assigned weekday. Delivering should take approximately 60-90 minutes, including loading your car and delivery time. It's a great way to spend your lunch break!

How do I sign up? Two steps:

1. First, Click "Respond" to this need and you will be prompted to complete all necessary steps (including Qualifications and Background Check) to be ready to volunteer, at Interfaith Ministries.

2. Then, email Ros at rmoore@imgh.org and let her know you're ready for New Volunteer Training! :)

Kiddos are welcome to tag along on meal deliveries, but do not need to register. The Driver must be 18 years of age or older. You are invited to bring along a Delivery Buddy, so long as all adults in the vehicle complete their volunteer registration and training.

Volunteer: Seeking Organize-Minded Helpers

Does organizing bring you peace? Does having things in alphabetical order make you super happy?

Nonprofit organizations, like ours, generate A LOT of paperwork, most of it, required by those who fund our programs. Would we love to be paperless? Of course, but, for now, we are COVERED in paper!

We seek the help of organize-minded individuals and small groups to help keep the files, filled with super important information, organized and current. This work helps us provide the best possible service to our seniors.

Won't you join us? :-)

Volunteer: Affirmation Bookmarks!

Affirmation Bookmarks
To register as an Affirmation Bookmark Volunteer Visit: https://form.jotform.com/220526741700144

Girls Empowerment Network has utilized our We Are Girls Conferences to bring our self-efficacy building curriculum to a vast number of girls at one time. This year, we are taking it on the road to help 2,000 girls across Texas plan for their futures and positively engage with their communities. Girls are looking for meaningful ways to connect now more than ever, and that’s where our volunteers come in! For girls in grades 3-12, we want to include an inspiring element of connection in our We Are Girls On The Road swag bags – Affirmation Bookmarks.

So what are Affirmation Bookmarks? These bookmarks written by Girls Empowerment Network volunteers aim to inspire, encourage, and uplift girls throughout our community. Affirmation Bookmarks provide volunteers with a unique way of supporting and celebrating girls.

Be sure to check out our Volunteer FAQs. This document is full of tips, guidelines, and example Affirmation Bookmarks!

What should be included in my bookmarks?

The bookmarks should have 8.5 inches x 2.75 inches in dimension.        The bookmarks should, at a minimum, have the thickness of cardstock ( this is to ensure they are a bit more sturdy/durable than if they were written on notebook or computer paper ). However, you don’t have to use cardstock - you can use any similar material that can be found around the house/apartment, i.e. shoeboxes, cardboard boxes, etc.        Volunteers are asked to write a minimum of 7-10 different bookmarks.        We are currently asking for handwritten/hand decorated bookmarks as this provides a personalized and meaningful touch.         We recommend taking 1-2 weeks max to complete your bookmarks.          We welcome decorations, colors, markers, and stickers! We suggest using a variety of bright and bold colors.        Ensure your writing is legible and use language that is accessible to young folks.        Use inclusive language in your bookmarks (see our inclusive language section in the FAQs!)        Steer away from language about physical attributes.          Do not share identifying/personal information on your bookmark.        When you have completed your 7+ bookmarks, you will mail them to:
PO BOX 3122, Austin, Texas, 78764 (ATTN: Relatable Role Model Letters). Please include your first and last name in the return address area of the mailing envelope so that we can credit you for your volunteer hours!

What are some creative elements that you could you include in your bookmark?

Share your favorite quote celebrating the power of girls/youth.        Provide a short affirmation that is uplifting.        Include stickers and doodles.        Draw powerful role models who have inspired you ( we’re excited to see your renditions of Michelle Obama, Frida Kahlo, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg! )

Volunteer: Holiday Toy Drive

The Holiday season is a time to be filled with joy and happiness, for some this may not be the case. All children and teens deserve to have something under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. This is where we need your help.  We need new unwrapped toys for the Holiday season. The age range from newborn to 18.  I know sometimes it is hard to buy for teens so gift cards are welcome too.  Gift cards for fast food, Walmart, Target , Amazon are great examples. Please reach out to Amy.vern@Cy-hope.org if you or your company would like to host. We would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for all your help!!

Volunteer: Donation Closet Sorting

We need volunteer support to help us sort and organize our donation closet! Our closet is a vital way for refugee families to select essential items like clothes, hygiene items, and kitchenware. With the number of donations we received, the closet can get disorganized quickly. Because of this, we are looking for volunteers to help sort and organize our donation closet so the families we serve can have a safe and easy time finding the items they need to acclimate in Houston.

This is a flexible opportunity and can be done in our offices during office hours (8:30am-5pm, Monday-Friday)

All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation, fill out an application, and submit a background check in order to volunteer with IMGH Refugee Services. If you are interested, please reach out to CEVolunteer@imgh.org.
