Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Cat Room 'Down N Dirty' Volunteer

At Friends For Life, every animal matters. Founded in 2002, Friends For Life introduced the first no-kill shelter model to Houston – saving animals regardless of their breed, age or condition.

Houston-grown, we’re here to help our neighbors care for the pets they love.

We’re not finished until every animal has a safe home. Until then, we’ll be innovating, improving and tracking results to find the most effective ways to save lives.

We have 4 free roaming cat rooms where we need your help in caring for the cats, feeding the cats, and cleaning the cat rooms at the shelter.

Currently, Down N Dirty shifts are offered from 9AM-Noon every day.

PetSmart Volunteer – We have some of our cats that show at the PetSmart cattery on South Shepherd and always need more volunteers who are interested in helping socialize the cats, clean the cages, feed the cats, and answer questions from the public.

PLEASE NOTE, ONCE YOU HAVE REGISTERED YOUR INTEREST YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT TO BE CONTACTED BY A MEMBER OF OUR VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT WHO WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH THE TRAINING NEEDED. VOLUNTEERS CANNOT SHOW UP AT THE SHELTER TO VOLUNTEER UNTIL THEY ARE REGISTERED ON OUR SYSTEM.

As we scale programming and expand community reach, building sophisticated, sustainable funding systems is a top organizational priority.

We are seeking a high-capacity Strategic Philanthropy Fellow to help architect the future of our development infrastructure.

This is a competitive, leadership-track opportunity.

Fellowship Overview

The Strategic Philanthropy Fellow will work directly with executive leadership to design and strengthen long-term revenue strategy, donor systems, corporate partnerships, and grant positioning.

• Support annual fundraising projections and goal-setting
• Research diversified funding opportunities (corporate, foundation, major donor, recurring giving)
• Assist in developing scalable donor pipelines

High-Level Grant Positioning

• Assist in organizing supporting documentation and outcome narratives
• Contribute to competitive positioning strategy

Major Donor & Corporate Engagement

• Identify gaps in fundraising processes and recommend improvements

Ideal Candidate

• Initiative and executive-level accountability

Preferred Academic Backgrounds:

Prior fundraising or grant experience preferred but not required. Intellectual rigor and work ethic matter more.

Commitment

• 15–20 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment required
• One-year commitment strongly preferred

We are seeking candidates interested in building something long-term, not short-term resume padding.

Leadership Advancement Pathway

This fellowship is designed as a direct pipeline into future compensated leadership roles.

Fellows who complete a minimum of one year and demonstrate exceptional strategic contribution will receive priority consideration for future paid Development Director or senior operational roles as funding expands.

As Domestic Truth Foundation grows, this position has the potential to evolve into a compensated executive-level development position.

What You Will Gain

• Direct mentorship from executive leadership

This role requires exceptional writing ability, analytical thinking, deadline management, and the ability to translate complex social impact work into structured, measurable funding narratives.

This is not an entry-level support position. The selected Fellow will contribute to high-stakes funding opportunities that directly impact program expansion.

• English or Professional Writing
• Social Work (macro focus)
• Psychology (research-focused)
• Pre-Law or Law-track

Prior grant writing experience preferred but strong writing ability is required.

Commitment

• 10–20 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment required
• One-year commitment strongly preferred

We are seeking candidates interested in building long-term grant infrastructure, not short-term resume experience.

Leadership Advancement Pathway

This fellowship is structured as a pipeline into future compensated development roles. Fellows who complete a minimum of one year and demonstrate exceptional performance will receive priority consideration for future paid grant or development leadership positions as funding expands.

What You Will Gain

• Real-world institutional funding experience
• Exposure to high-level nonprofit strategy
• Portfolio-quality writing samples
• Executive mentorship
• Letter of recommendation upon successful completion
• Direct impact on organizational sustainability

Application Requirements (Selective Process)

To be considered, applicants must submit:

• Resume
• One professional or academic writing sample (3–5 pages preferred)
• A brief statement of interest (300–500 words) explaining why they are interested in grant writing within the nonprofit sector

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a brief grant narrative exercise to assess structured writing ability.

Volunteer: Amazing Opportunity to Mentor High School Students with Minds Matter Houston!

Title:Volunteer Mentor

Reports to: Saturday Programs Director

Time Commitment: ~2.5 hours per week on select Saturdays

Schedule:September - May

Long-term Commitment:3-year cycle (Sophomore through Senior year)

Our Mission

Minds Matter Houston transforms the lives of highly motivated high school students from low-income communities. We bridge the opportunity gap by providing the resources, mentorship, and support necessary for students to thrive in college and beyond. Our students have the ambition; we provide the roadmap.

The Role: Your Journey as a Mentor

As a Mentor, you are more than a tutor; you are a champion for a student’s potential. You will be paired with a bright, motivated student starting in their sophomore year, walking alongside them until they walk across the stage at high school graduation.

Key Responsibilities:

Relational Mentorship: Build a consistent, trusting 1-on-1 relationship. You will be a stable presence, helping your mentee navigate the social and academic pressures of high school.

College Access Coaching: Guide your mentee through the complexities of college research, fly-in programs, and the application process.

Skill Advocacy: Facilitate growth in "power skills"—time management, professional communication, and goal-setting—using the Minds Matter curriculum.

Summer Program Support: Assist your mentee in applying for competitive summer academic programs at top-tier universities.

Academic Accountability: Provide a supportive "nudge" to ensure program assignments and schoolwork remain a priority.

What We’re Looking For

We seek professionals and community leaders who are as committed to our students' success as they are to their own.

The "Long View": The ability to commit to a three-year cycle is essential. Your consistency is the bedrock of your mentee's success.

Educational Advocates: A firm belief that a student's zip code should not determine their destination.

Empathetic Leadership: A balance of high expectations and deep compassion for the barriers our students face.

Reliability: Our sessions happen on Saturdays; showing up is the first and most important part of the job.

Clearance: Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

The Mentor Experience

A Structured Community: You aren't on an island. You will work within the Programming Team, supported by staff and a cohort of fellow mentors.

Professional Networking: Connect with a diverse, high-achieving network of volunteers across Houston’s corporate, medical, and civic sectors.

Skill Development: Hone your coaching, active listening, and leadership skills through our comprehensive training and ongoing workshops.

Tangible Legacy: Experience the profound satisfaction of seeing "your" student receive their college acceptance letters and realize their dreams.
