Jesse Jones Park offers free educational tours to groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the months of September through May. Join the Jesse Jones Park Volunteers to help lead school-aged children, scouts, and other groups for an interactive Texas pioneer history program that includes a visit to the Nature Center and a one hour walk through the replica 1830’s-era Redbud Hill Homestead and Akokisa Indian Village.

No experience necessary. Training will be provided by staff and experienced volunteers.

Do you love gardening or working outdoors with tools? Then we need you to join the Homestead Team and help rejuvenate the Redbud Hill Homestead at Jesse Jones Park.

Some activities include debarking the logs, sharpening the woodshop tools, maintaining the herb and vegetable gardens, and maintaining the Akokisa Indian Village. All of these tasks can easily be done with social-distancing. No experience is needed, just an eagerness to learn.

The Homestead Team meets every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. We may also be able to accommodate volunteers on other days of the week with advanced notice. Ages 12 and older welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 require a parental consent form and volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Families and groups are welcome.

Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is proud to feature the replica 1830's-era Redbud Hill Homestead, as well as the replica Akokisa Indian Village. Activities in the homestead and village include the monthly Second Saturday Settlers program on the second Saturday of every month from 1 to 4 p.m., Native American Heritage Day in September, Pioneer Day in November, and the popular An Old-Fashioned Christmas event every December.

Living history demonstrators are needed to dress in period correct costumes (provided by the park) and demonstrate various pioneer and Akokisa activities at park programs and events. No experience is needed. All training will be provided by park staff and experienced volunteers.

Every day is Earth Day at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center! Volunteers are invited to join staff and assist with a variety of conservation projects such as maintaining the pollinator gardens, plant propagation, and habitat restoration.

Conservation Connections meets every Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Ages 12 and older welcome. Volunteers under the age of 18 require a parental consent form and volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Families and groups are welcome.

Please wear closed-toed shoes and bring your own gloves, if possible. Long pants, a hat, and a refillable water bottle recommended.

The Adopt-A-Trail/Adopt-An-Acre program is an opportunity for conservation-minded groups to sponsor a section of Jones Park by controlling invasive non-native plants and conducting routine maintenance. A custom, laser-etched sign will mark your designated trail/acre.

Each group will be asked to commit to conducting a workday (about 4 hours) every three months to remove any invasive plants. Sponsoring groups will be asked to commit to maintaining their trail/acre for a minimum of one year.

No experience is necessary. ANY group can help! For example, scouts, schools, church groups, home-school groups, conservation organizations, companies in need of volunteer hours for their employees, etc. There is no maximum or minimum size group.

Participants must wear closed toe shoes. Full-length pants, work gloves, a sun hat, and refillable water bottle are recommended.

Hospice volunteers provide a variety of direct and indirect services to patients and their families. Visits to provide companionship, caregiver relief, errands, music therapy, pet therapy, and other services are examples of direct services. Phone calls, pen-pals, and special projects like blanket crafting are examples of indirect services. Volunteers can also get involved with administrative support by assisting in the office. Participate in events at assisted living such as bingo or karaoke. Attend fairs to recruit volunteers at campuses. Hand out flyers to the community to recruit volunteers.

What hospice volunteer does is determined by their abilities and interests.

Encompass is a hospice service serving the Houston Area. We have an office in Clear Lake. 

As a volunteer, you would allow our teams of hospice care specialists to spend more of their focus on our patients during their darkest hour. You would assist staff in a wide range of important duties such as data entry, filing, copying, mailings, and other essential functions required of hospice care. This service would take place in our office during normal business hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thank you for even considering joining our team.

We are tracking hours and providing Volunteer Activity Report to you, your supervisor/professor or any other authorities per request.

Our hospice patients at the facility are very isolated these days due to COVID.

We would like to invite dancers to volunteer to perform for the patients (it will be done in a safe way, I promise).

If you enjoy cutting hair and want to help in the community, our hospice patients could use your skill! Right now I have a Veteran that is used to having a military cut and he has not been able to get a haircut in some months and would feel so much better right now with something as simple as a buzz cut. This need would be in the Baytown area, however, we have many other patients that would enjoy getting a hair cut any time all over our service area.

With the great response we have had to people building bird feeders for our Hospice patients, we are now needing some hangers to place in yards to put the feeders on.  The majority of our patients do have trees in their yards that I can hang them on, however we have several that do not have trees outside of their window visible from their beds.

The poles can be metal, wooden, it doesn't matter what its made out of as long as I can stake it in the yard and hang a feeder onto it.

If you would like to help our hospice patients watch the birds outside their windows, please let me know.

You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

Our offices are in the S Houston and Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Friendswood Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. You can give these people a final dignity in their darkest hour. Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center has had over 250 bird species sighted within its boundaries! We have birds during all seasons and many migratory species may stop in.

In our restored prairie and wetlands, a seasonal bird survey is conducted to monitor the different species that are found. Once a month from September to May, we are looking for volunteers to help assist with this very important project.

All skill levels are welcomed; from advanced birders to beginners. On-spot training will be provided.

Do you have a green thumb? We want you to come out and help us keep our gardens and wildscapes in tiptop shape. Assist with the overall development and maintenance of the gardens and trails. Duties include pruning, invasives removal, weeding, and planting. No experience necessary, all training will be provided.

Come out to Sheldon and walk the trails! Our rovers interact with guests to answer questions, provide directions, and point out wildlife! You can also assist with our public programs. Sheldon Lake State Park is open daily from 8:00am-5:00pm. If you enjoy talking to people, this opportunity is for you! Preferred volunteer days are Saturdays or Sundays for 1-3 hours. May be asked to assist with outreach events outside of the park.

Preferred experience would include knowledge of flora and fauna indigenous to the Piney Woods region of Texas, experience presenting to groups, and the ability to walk trails or stand for several hours at a time. Shifts will be primarily on weekend days, or as needed. Volunteer will need to coordinate a schedule with park staff.

Be part of a large-scale prairie and wetland restoration project! Our volunteers come out every Tuesday from 8:00am-11:30am to plant, pot, and perform other restoration activities. Volunteers should expect to get dirty and learn about prairies and wetlands! No experience necessary, orientation and training provided.

Houston has a wonderful diversity of plants and animals, but they are being outcompeted by invasive species that harm the environment. Sheldon Lake State Park wants help managing our restored coastal prairie so that the many native birds, amphibians, and mammals will still have a home. Volunteers will work with park staff to remove invasive plants like the Chinese tallow, eastern baccharis, and deep-rooted sedge using tools and other methods. You will also learn how to identify the flora and fauna of the greater Houston region. Invasive removal will be done outside in variable conditions and will require physical exertion. All tools will be provided.  If you love the outdoors and want to preserve it for years to come, visit our park and see what you can do to protect Houston’s natural resources.

Responsibilities include tasks such as answering the phones, taking messages, making copies, preparing and sending written/electronic correspondence, scheduling appointments, greeting visitors, and conducting tours for clients interested in venue rentals.

No art background is required, but docents should have the ability to write and speak effectively. Docents may help in the gallery by facilitating conversations with visitors about exhibits and during special events. AccentCare Hospice is piloting a Virtual Reality Experience Program for hospice patients. Virtual Reality Experience Volunteers will be trained to work alongside the Hospice Social Worker to bring provided virtual reality equipment into the patient's home and engage them with experiences they would never have access to normally. Virtual Reality Experiences include touring cities around the world, joining deep sea divers, exploring nature preserves and more!

Be a big part of NAMI Gulf Coast's mission is providing mental health education and support to individuals and families impacted by mental illness as well as the professionals who assist them. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in being trained to facilitate local online support groups and teaching mental health education courses.

We are looking for a videography or multimedia specialist to create a video or video that will show off our young adults and everything they do! All levels of experience are welcome, including students and recent graduates. 

S.T.E.P.S. is a nonprofit organization that empowers young adults with disabilities through vocational training and employment. We are one of the only programs for young adults with disabilities in our area. Our program allows them to gain essential vocational and independent living skills and a sense of purpose and community inclusion. Far too many young adults spend their days at home following high school due to limited opportunities, and we are working to change that. However, there’s still a lot of work to do. The Friends of Freeman Library is a nonprofit organization that supports the Clear Lake-Harris County Branch Library. Today libraries need support more than ever as they work to provide books and technology that meet the needs of the entire community.

We are looking for community-minded board members to raise funds and awareness for the library. All funds raised by the Friends-through donations, memberships, bookstore sales, online book sales, fundraisers and more-help fund special programs, events, services, and collections at our library. The board meets monthly at the library.

Fundraising, marketing, or social media experience is a plus.

We are a Hospice Service Provider in the SouthEast Houston Area. We have a geriatric patient in the Alvin, TX living at home in an unsafe environment and we would like to seek your time to offer help to this gentleman to clear the clutter and bring hygiene in this house.

This would allow to bring in some fresh medical equipment to this home and send providers to offer care and comfort in a home care setting.

The patient does have limited life expectancy and we would like to get him some help and assistance as quickly as possible.

The Freeman Bookstore regularly needs new volunteers to those who leave for a variety of reasons. Volunteers sell, straighten, and shelve books. Volunteers must be able to learn Square point-of-sale technology. Shifts are 2½ hours Monday through Saturday. Most shifts are currently staffed by incumbent volunteers. The remainder are on a substitute list. Substitutes normally have ample opportunities to work when open shifts occur.

A good match for people with knowledge of books &/or who have experience working in a bookstore or library. Sales experience is a plus.

The following are best practices that volunteers can utilize while engaging and participating in community events during the Coronavirus pandemic.  

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water or use hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol. 

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, especially when out in public. 

Avoid contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are sick. 

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. 

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue away. 

Stagger your volunteering shifts.

Volunteers most at risk of contracting Covid-19 should not volunteer until further notice.

Provide administrative or support functions for older volunteers who want to be part of the response.

Interfaith Caring Ministries is in need of a volunteer receptionist for our administrative office. The volunteer will be trained on greeting clients and other walk in visitors; routing calls, disseminating agency information; taking messages, searching for records in our client database software and scheduling client appointments. Must be comfortable talking to clients and handling a sensitive, vulnerable population. You will be the face of our organization and must be professional and handle multiple tasks at once.

Interfaith Caring Ministries is in need of client interviewers for our Client Services program. These volunteers are responsible for greeting clients and interviewing them one-on-one as they complete paperwork and apply for financial assistance with our agency. Volunteers should be comfortable working with a sensitive and vulnerable population; professionalism, adhering to a strict confidentiality policy and handling clients with kindness, patience and grace are a must. 

After our students finish the high school program of Higher Up Texas, they move into HUT Phase 2. Here, we provide support via group virtual meetings, one on one check ins, mailed care packages, letters of encouragement, and any resources needed to help answer questions and find solutions towards reaching career goals. 

Our HUG-A-HUT is a box of care items that you can send in the mail and the student will receive it. Items can include candy, tea, candle, journal, motivational book, crossword books, coloring books, fast food gift card, and most importantly- a note of encouragement. Things to help ease their minds and feel comforted as they begin life after high school! 

HUG-A-HUT is a socially distanced way to share the love to a student needing some encouragement in life!

Our website needs to be changed over to Wordpress so it can be a portable website.  

Alzheimer's Association Support Group facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia. This support group alternates meeting in-person and via Zoom every other session.

After orientations and training, you will be joining an experienced facilitator of an ongoing group that meets the 2nd & 4th Fridays 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM in Galveston.

Qualifications:

· Ability to be empathetic and separate personal needs from group needs.

· Strong listening and effective communication skills.

· Ability to redirect and facilitate discussion as well as fulfill the duties and responsibilities as described in the Facilitator Agreement.

· Commitment to promote the mission and services of the Association and willingness to act as an extension of the Association.

· Experience with dementia as a family member or health care professional preferred but not mandatory.

Commitment Expected:

· Support Group Facilitators commit to a 1-year term meeting monthly.

· Orientation includes: online general volunteer orientation (1 hour) + program volunteer orientation (1 hour) + self-study or in-person role training with staff partner (~4 hours). Background checks are required as part of the volunteer selection process.
