Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Mask Up, Meals on Wheels!

Interfaith Ministries' Meals on Wheels Program needs your help to provide a cloth, reusable mask to each of our Meals on Wheels seniors. A standard, adult-sized mask, with soft ear loops, is recommended. We will need to have them in small bags, to ease distribution. If you prefer to bring them to us, ready to be sent out, please include bagging them, individually, in a bag that lays flat during transport (a sandwich sized baggie – either paper or plastic – should be perfect. Target sells some paper ones that are biodegradable). Feel free to get creative with cute designs, so long as we steer clear of any religious or political messaging. We serve a broad audience, so we recommend keeping it to inclusive and happy things. If you’re unsure, solid colors or striped/paisley/gingham patters are always a safe bet.

The Details:

Purchase festive, colorful, or themed fabric and make as many adult-sized masks as you like. Note: We serve people of all faiths, including those of no particular faith, as well as folks from all cultural backgrounds and political affiliations. Please avoid religious or political patterns, wording, and designs. Here's is some helpful information from the CDC regarding homemade masks: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-to-make-cloth-face-covering.html Place completed cloth, reusable masks into a sandwich-sized, sealed bag. This will minimize the number of hands that come into direct contact with the face mask between donation and distribution to our seniors. We will still advise that they wash them before wearing.

OR

Purchase adult-sized cloth, reusable masks online or at the store. Most major retailers have some for sale these days. If the masks came several to a package, please bag individually, to help us with distribution.

Email Lauren at llewis@imgh.org with any questions or to arrange drop-off of your donation. We encourage you to get your networks involved and work together to create or gather these needed items! Social distancing doesn't mean we can't work together!

Items can be dropped off to our Meals on Wheels Distribution Facility at 3202 San Jacinto, 77004. Ideal drop-off times are between 11 AM and 1 PM on weekdays. Our building is least crowded during these times. Please email llewis@imgh.org to schedule your drop-off.

Thank you for helping us continue to offer our seniors the things that they need to keep them safe and well!

Volunteer: The Holiday Project Update for Christmas Cards as of 12/17/2020

Christmas Card Connections Update as of 12/17/2020

If you still want to make cards or if you have made cards and I have not made a connection for you yet, please see the information below....

I apologize but because of very serious complications of Covid with a family member, I am unable to continue making Holiday Project Christmas card connections.

I am now partnering with Edward Craft and he has agreed to receive and deliver our Holiday Project Christmas cards!   Check out his Facebook Page Edward Craft #HolidayCards4Seniors   You can mail your cards to arrive to him by December 23rd or meet up with him to give him your cards. He is personally delivering the cards to senior living communities.   Contact Edward by cell phone,  832-341-2882 or mail cards to him at:   Edward Craft The Village at Sugar Land 140 Eldridge Road, Suite H Sugar Land, Texas 77478   Edward is very willing to meet up with you to receive your cards.   Edward Craft 832-341-2882.   Thanks and have a VERY Merry Christmas!   Please text, call or email me if you have any questions.

I will still be able to approve volunteer hours for volunteers that need volunteer service hours for their card making. I can approve the hours through your request on your Volunteer Houston sign up or your individual form. Just email me pictures of your cards once they are completed and delivered.
Donna Martin The Holiday Project  Give JOY ~ Get JOY theholidayprojecthouston@yahoo.com 832-515-3862 cell   Card Guidelines: In order to encourage creativity, very few guidelines are imposed on the making of Holiday Project handmade greeting cards. The cards may be almost any size, and the media used can be as simple as colored markers available at almost any grocery or drug store. Some people use combinations of media such as markers, rubber stamps, images cut from used or surplus store-bought greeting cards, cut-out computer-generated images, pasted bits of ribbon or felt, etc. Here are a few general suggestions on other matters:
•Ideally the cards should be able to stand up if placed on a table, nightstand, etc.
•Please don't use glitter-on-glue. The glitter tends to get all over everything. However, pre-mixed "Glitter Glue" (such as is made by Crayola) is fine.
•Sentiments that imply that the recipients' circumstances are less than ideal (e.g., "Cheer Up!", "You are not forgotten", etc.) should be avoided.
•Greetings should be generic so that they can be appropriate to almost anyone. (For example, a Christmas card that says "Merry Christmas" on the front and "Wishing you all the joy of the season" or other similar sayings that are creative and/or festive inside would be fine.
•Please don't enclose or attach candy to the cards. (If you want to send candy or holiday treats to the residents they must be in sealed store packaging. The Activity Director can  give treats to the residents).
•It's preferable that the cards not be in envelopes. (Some of the recipients suffer from advanced arthritis or other conditions that make the simple act of removing a card from an envelope quite difficult.)
•Cards should be signed by the persons making them.Any signature should probably include just the signer's first name or first names of group... Please Please Please do not put anything about the state of a residents health ...such as I hope you get well soon or hope your health improves...the residents aren’t all sick that live in long term care and for the short term rehab patients in skilled nursing facilities. Volunteer: Giving Back during the Pandemic

Open Gate has remained open during this pandemic, but we’ve had to change how we are serving our homeless youth.  We are unable to serve sit down meals as we used to, but we continue to serve nutritious meals on Sundays from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM on a carry out/to-go basis.

During the height of the lockdown when many of our youth were locked into shelters, we continued to serve about 25 meals each Sunday to the truly homeless.  We are now averaging about 45 to-go meals served each of the last three or four Sundays.  We are observing social distancing by limiting the number of youth allowed inside at a time, scanning them for fever with a non-contact thermometer prior to entry, and providing fresh socks and underwear in addition to the meal.  No one is allowed to remain inside.  While the clothing closet is not officially open, we do provide shirts and trousers where desperately needed.  We also offer masks, hand sanitizer in small bottles, hygiene packs, and plenty of cold water bottles to help beat the heat.

We are offering these services to the youth with a minimum number of volunteers (4 to 5 max) to maximize social distancing protection for the volunteers and the participants.  While we realize that many volunteers are being socially responsible and staying home, if you’d like to volunteer, we’d love to see you on a Sunday.  We also occasionally have opportunities to volunteer on a Saturday or during the week when only volunteers would be present.

Volunteer: Software Development Artificial Intelligence VOIP- Programming Machine Learning Application

AI-Powered CRM and VOIP platform (uses Machine Learning)-

Our non-profit will first begin with building the front-end User Interface (UI).

Data quality is an often overlooked success factor in prospecting. Sales departments lose hundreds of hours and monetary value per sales rep from using bad prospect data. Most companies know that their data is a problem, but few realize the high costs involved with ignoring it

Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be provided per student dependent upon the completed contribution and milestones

SOLUTION

We are building an AI-powered CRM that integrates with open source VOIP system. Twilio or Asterik can be used for API integration for VOIP part of application. Machine Learning will also be integrated to "teach" the system how to follow up with a company's customers or end-users.

CSR= Customer Service Rep

1. Call comes in and CSR answers 2. Call is recorded and transcribed using an AI tool like JOG.AI (the whole conversation will be transcribed in company’s CRM) 3. AI determines important areas of customer calls based on Keywords that the Customer says like "Sign Up" or "I am frustrated" or "I would like to cancel my service" 4. Based on the keywords stated by Customer, the company’s platform will generate a suggested plan of action along with a template to respond via Email or SMS Examples include: If (customer says "Sign Up") then (AI will suggest emailing "Sign Up" form template) --this will ensure management that the appropriate customers looking to Sign Up for a service receive the appropriate follow up and should increase overall sales and reduce lost leads If (customer says "I would like to cancel my service" or "I want a refund" or "I’m really unhappy/not happy with the service I received") then (AI will suggest emailing or sending an SMS for a free month of service to try to keep customer) Company CRM platform will automatically add the Customer’s name and voice transcription into a Record. The Record will also contain all logs of emails and texts with the Customer in chronological order so any CSR and Manager can see the entire lifecycle of Customer communication end-to-end. Built on top of existing CRM Theme from Code Canyon.

A little about us:

CDH Stars and Angels is a nonprofit patient advocacy organization based in Houston, Texas that offers a range of support services nationwide to families of children born with the severe birth defect Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH is a condition that develops in utero when the muscle dividing the chest from the abdomen, the diaphragm, fails to close. The results of this failure, while sometimes treatable, can be fatal.

We provide small grants to the families experiencing CDH to pay for medical treatments and related travel, and, when needed, funeral expenses. We also provide care packages to CDH-affected families, raise awareness of this defect, and advocate for patient-centered research in partnership with organizations whose goals align with ours.

Volunteer: Men Needed To Share Their Opinions Virtually

A Call to Men: Are you looking for a way to engage in the fight against human trafficking? Do you want to explore what defines male masculinity, healthy relationships, and violence prevention?

UAHT has launched a virtual Men’s Accountability Discussion Group to end the demand for sex trafficking and is looking for male participants. The group will use the Stopping Sexual Exploitation: A Program For Men (SSE) curriculum, a non-judgmental program based on principles of social justice and personal transformation. The curriculum -- and discussion group -- explore several topics like the harms of sexual exploitation, power and violence and is open to all men.

UAHT is looking for a total of 12 men to virtually participate in two separate groups -- 6 men per group -- for 10 weeks.

One group will start Tuesday, May 4, and the second group will begin Thursday, June 3.
The time commitment will be evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

Here's what previous participants had to say about the program:

“Amazing facilitators, impassioned [participants], and worthwhile and thought-provoking knowledge learned/shared!”

“It provides a wealth of knowledge and resources for EVERYONE -- an ally or victim."

If you’re interested in participating in these crucial discussions, please sign up by May 3.

PLEASE NOTE: This program does NOT require that volunteers have considered or purchased sex or engaged in sex trafficking. It is your personal insights and opinions on the subject of exploitation that we seek.

Upcoming SSE Schedule

May Cohort: Starts Tuesday, May 4, and Ends Tuesday, July 6

June Cohort: Starts Thursday, June 3, and Ends Thursday, Aug. 5

Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation Partner

Ready to change a life from the comfort of home?

Join ENGin as a conversation partner! This is a flexible and unique opportunity to make a direct  impact on someone’s life while discovering a new culture and meeting a new friend.

We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll practice English with your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 10-12 weeks.

Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 26,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships.

Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience.

"I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up."

“Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

"This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!"

To learn more about ENGin and become a volunteer, please visit www.enginprogram.org/volunteer.

If you’d like to learn more about ENGin before joining, please watch the recording of our volunteer info-session here.
