Looking for a way to give back, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with your community? Our 12 community gardens need volunteers to help with planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and general upkeep. Whether you have a green thumb or just want to lend a hand, your time and effort will help create thriving spaces for everyone to enjoy. Gardens are open Monday – Friday and with special requests on weekends for large groups.

Volunteer Contribution: Volunteer teams will work with House Leaders to accomplish tasks scheduled for the day.  Activities include using a variety of power and hand tools for home building.

Agape Homes exists to preserve affordability and create a pathway to homeownership for neighbors in OST/South Union who otherwise could not afford to remain in this gentrifying community.

Occasionally we have housing applicants who need information translated into Spanish. Volunteers will schedule a time for a call with the applicant and an Agape staff member to help facilitate the discussion about the program and what is expected. 

We also have official housing documents that need to be translated into Spanish.

Both of these opportunities can be done remotely.

We are seeking compassionate individuals willing to share their time and talents in support of the Association's mission. You'll be part of a team providing and enhancing care and support for all affected by Alzheimer's Disease. As a vital part of our team, your efforts will make a meaningful difference for those who need you most.

Administrative volunteers assist staff with office duties, data entry, filing and other day-to-day administrative tasks. 

Our building is situated on a park-like campus with easy access and plenty of parking. You'll work with friendly chapter employees who are dedicated to the vision of a world without Alzheimer’s.

Commitment to a regular weekly shift will be preferred. Most work will be during regular business hours and in the main office (near the intersection of I-610 and the Gulf Freeway).

Houston Parks and Recreation needs volunteers to help us keep the city's parks clean and green! No experience needed or age limits on who can help! All volunteers under the age of 16 are more than welcome as long as they attend with an adult! Duties include but are not limited to park de-littering, painting, mulching, and tree plantings!

The Houston Police Department offers an unpaid internship opportunity where you'll gain practical experience that complements academic coursework, course credit opportunities, a deeper understanding of police operations and community service, provide the department with an opportunity to involve students in various aspects of police work, provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. 

Once approved to be an HPD intern, you will have an opportunity to intern within a concerned division within the Houston Police Department such as Homicide, Major Offendors, VICE, Family Violence, Narcotics, Office of Community Affairs, and Victim Services.

Wonderful opportunity to join the Houston Police Department Youth Police Advisory Council (YPAC).

Volunteers who join HPD YPAC volunteer program can choose from 3 different initiatives, (Fall time initiative) Senior Citizen Christmas Social, (Springtime initiative) YPAC Spring event, (All year around) YPACGivesBack. The purpose of these events is not only to give back but to demonstrate to youth that the world extends far beyond individual experiences. Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 1-4 people to help us secure funding to support our 15 for 15 projects celebrating our15-year anniversary!  This an exciting way to make a generational impact on a unique park and bayou environment in central Houston.

1-2 people will serve as Grants Directors(s) and will liaise with the board more regularly. Directors must be members of Friends of Woodland Park, per our bylaws.

Expectations include: 

Identify grant opportunities with help of FWP board members.

Review selected grant opportunities with relevant Houston Parks and Recreation Department personnel for support or permission (ie, affidavit) to apply.

Prepare grant applications: includes writing responses to questions, assembling
responsive documents with help of board members, securing application fees if needed,
seeking final review from board members and submitting completed application.

Commitment: Minimum 1 year

Come help us advance a concept for eliminating floating/drifting trash in Little White Oak Bayou through Woodland Park!

Keeping Woodland Park Nature Preserve clean is an on-going challenge for the community. Regular cleanup events help, but the amount of trash and debris that finds its way onto the banks of Little White Oak Bayou and into trees and shrubs is unmanageable.

Our goal for the coming year is to determine a path forward and kick off a feasibility study.

We're looking for 1-5 people with related experience and/or anyone willing to learn! You'll need research and analytical skills, aptitude for talking tech, and ability to talk with local officials.

Expectations:

One person will serve as lead/Director. Per our bylaws, this person must be a member of Friends of Woodland Park.

Review options evaluation prepared in 2012 and funded by Bridgestone.

Gain awareness/understanding of flood mitigation plans for Little White Oak Bayou and plans to reconstruct culvert under I-45 as part of TxDOTs North Houston Highway Improvement Program (NHHIP).

Identify best practices used by other organizations in the Houston area and beyond. 

Work with FWP board and other stakeholders and experts to identify one or more preferred concepts for further exploration. Options could include short term (pre-NHHIP) solutions and long term (post NHHIP) solutions. 

Draft scope of feasibility study for preferred concept(s). 

Identify lead organization(s) to implement a pilot or ongoing project, and funding required.

Support lead organization in pilot/project implementation.

Commitment: minimum 1 year

Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 1 or 2 people to design 6-10 interpretative signs to be located throughout the Woodland Park Nature Preserve.

Designer(s) would work closely with FWP board and Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) to develop designs for signs explaining features, wildlife, and the history of Woodland Park Nature Preserve. 

FWP board will provide “mock-ups” and visual aids (photos. maps, etc)

Designer(s) will need to follow HPARD guidelines and specifications for signage. 

If applicable, time spent would be considered an “in-kind” donation and they are eligible to be listed as a “Corporate Sponsor”.

Cashiers will be responsible for ringing up customers and accepting cash and card payments. They will also have responsiblities including keeping the store tidy, organizing merchandise and displays, and assisting customers throughout their shopping experience. No previous retail experience is necessary, just a good attitude!

All sales at this store will benefit Cypress Assistance Ministries. CAM is a 501c3 non-profit that benefits the Cy-Fair community. We provide rental and utility assistance, maintain a food pantry, provide job hunting resources, as well as other community services.

Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) is partnering with some area grocery stores to help provide food for our food pantry. We just need some helpful individuals to pick up the donations from these retailers and help deliver them to CAM's facility.

Programs like this are wonderful resources for CAM, as they help us source items that would be otherwise difficult to source (such as bakery items and produce), and they help reduce food waste in our community.

Volunteers must have access to a vehicle suitable for transporting food items (an SUV or minivan would work perfectly, a sedan with sufficient trunk space would work as well). We will provide insulated bags.

We need weekly drivers for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. You may choose to volunteer for one, two, or all three of these pick-ups.

We’re looking for volunteers to help us raise awareness in the community by delivering flyers and sharing info with local businesses!

Groups up to 8 serve to-go breakfast or lunch at our residential facility, RoseMary’s Place. Shifts are available Monday-Friday. We have two options: you can bring about 20-30 bags for breakfast, lunch or snacks. Or we can provide food for your group to divide into to-go containers. After setup, Volunteers usually provide service for an hour, like 9-10 am.

RoseMary’s Place: Our new permanent supportive housing facility for 149 residents for an alternative to the streets. It's a fresh start and a supportive environment for those in need, dedicated to providing dignified housing solutions for our homeless population.

Since 1968, Magnificat Houses, Inc has housed more than 20,000 adults experiencing homelessness and served over 10 million meals through our Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen, residential homes and Clubhouse programs in a healing community. Up to 3 volunteers serve prepare breakfast and lunch at St. Joseph Clubhouse. A shift is from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm on weekdays, preparing food, serving and cleaning up afterwards. Work alongside a staff member in the Clubhouse kitchen, the hub of the Clubhouse, a lively and fun place to volunteer. Bilingual in Spanish and English is appreciated.

St. Joseph Clubhouse is a healing community for individuals suffering mental illness – open to both unhoused and housed – offering job training, life skills, and reintegration support in a supportive environment rooted in friendship, compassion, and shared healing.

Since 1968, Magnificat Houses, Inc has housed more than 20,000 adults experiencing homelessness and served over 10 million meals through our Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen, residential homes and Clubhouse programs in a healing community. A Point of Distribution (POD) Volunteer helps give out important supplies like food and water during emergencies. They work at special locations and have important jobs like keeping the line organized, handing out supplies the right way, checking how much is left, and keeping records. They also answer questions from people and help set up and take down the site during emergencies.

The Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is seeking a Garden Director as a non-voting member of
FWP with responsibility for the garden areas surrounding the community center, Firefly Field
garden, the entrances to Woodland Park and other possible areas in the future. The Garden

Homeownership Planning Corps is a nonprofit coalition, led by YHL, dedicated to helping future homeowners plan early to work, save, and build strong credit so they can achieve homeownership while still young.

This is a part-time unpaid volunteer role for the Captain of Homeownership Planning Corps at a place of work and is supported in the Houston, TX area. The Captain will be responsible for leading and coordinating homeownership planning advocating programs at the community.

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico.

When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Freewheels Houston's shop has the tools and parts you will need. Bike shop mechanics should be familiar with most bike systems.

We use a repair checklist developed with input from a master bike technician.

If you don’t know all the systems, our volunteers enjoy sharing their knowledge and can help get you up to speed. If you are already an expert, you will start getting questions from other volunteers looking to improve their skills.
