Volunteer: Dog Behavior & Enrichment Volunteers

At Friends For Life, every animal matters. Founded in 2002, Friends For Life introduced the first no-kill shelter model to Houston – saving animals regardless of their breed, age or condition.

Houston-grown, we’re here to help our neighbors care for the pets they love.

We’re not finished until every animal has a safe home. Until then, we’ll be innovating, improving and tracking results to find the most effective ways to save lives.

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will work hand-in-hand with our behavior staff and learn how to work with the dogs in our program.  The dogs that live at the shelter are dogs that we have not been able to get out into a foster home due to reactivity that needs to be managed. This could include an array of behaviors. Maybe they're afraid of other dogs, or scared of loud trucks outside. We will fully train you on dog body language, enrichment, and reactivity so you are able to safely work with these dogs to help rehabilitate them and in turn find their forever homes! This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that other shelters don't offer. If you truly love dogs and want to learn more about how to care for them, this opportunity is for you!

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will help provide various enrichment needs to our dogs (think kongs and nose work!). Enrichment volunteers are essential to help improve the daily lives of our dogs at the shelter.* Our Behavior volunteer program is a five-step program, and you'll start out as a BV1 volunteer (behavior volunteer - level 1). Our behavior program is truly one-of-a-kind. You'll learn such much, like how animals communicate, different types of enrichment, how to read body language, learning theory, and so much more.

Current Behavior Dog Volunteer shifts from from 2-5PM every day - including weekends.

Sign up today to help our dogs get the socialization and enrichment that they deserve! PLEASE NOTE, ONCE YOU HAVE REGISTERED YOUR INTEREST YOU WILL NEED TO WAIT TO BE CONTACTED BY A MEMBER OF OUR VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT WHO WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH THE TRAINING NEEDED. VOLUNTEERS CANNOT SHOW UP AT THE SHELTER TO VOLUNTEER UNTIL THEY ARE REGISTERED ON OUR SYSTEM.

Note - This need is ongoing. Please disregard the "runs until" date attached to this need.

Volunteer: Strategic Philanthropy Fellow

Domestic Truth Foundation (501c)(3)

Hybrid | Houston Preferred

Selective Leadership Fellowship | Academic Credit Eligible

About Domestic Truth Foundation

Domestic Truth Foundation is a mission-driven nonprofit advancing crisis intervention, survivor support, advocacy reform, and long-term systemic change for those impacted by domestic violence. As we scale programming and expand community reach, building sophisticated, sustainable funding systems is a top organizational priority.

We are seeking a high-capacity Strategic Philanthropy Fellow to help architect the future of our development infrastructure.

This is a competitive, leadership-track opportunity.

Fellowship Overview

The Strategic Philanthropy Fellow will work directly with executive leadership to design and strengthen long-term revenue strategy, donor systems, corporate partnerships, and grant positioning.

This role is designed for candidates who think in terms of strategy, structure, and scale — not short-term fundraising tactics.

The selected Fellow will help build the foundation for financial sustainability and growth.

Core Responsibilities

Revenue Strategy Development
• Assist in building a structured, multi-stream revenue model
• Support annual fundraising projections and goal-setting
• Research diversified funding opportunities (corporate, foundation, major donor, recurring giving)
• Assist in developing scalable donor pipelines

High-Level Grant Positioning
• Conduct targeted grant research aligned with reform and program priorities
• Build structured grant tracking systems
• Assist in organizing supporting documentation and outcome narratives
• Contribute to competitive positioning strategy

Major Donor & Corporate Engagement
• Assist in developing corporate sponsorship frameworks
• Help structure major donor engagement plans
• Support creation of professional donor-facing materials
• Track cultivation timelines and stewardship touchpoints

Campaign Architecture
• Help design high-impact fundraising campaigns
• Support integration of digital fundraising strategies
• Assist with impact reporting and performance analysis

Infrastructure & Systems
• Build development SOPs and documentation
• Help implement organized donor database systems
• Identify gaps in fundraising processes and recommend improvements

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking individuals who demonstrate:

• Strategic thinking and long-term vision
• Exceptional written communication ability
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Professional maturity and discretion
• Comfort with structure, data, and performance tracking
• Initiative and executive-level accountability

Preferred Academic Backgrounds:

• Public Administration
• Nonprofit Management
• Public Policy
• Business or Finance
• Communications
• Pre-Law or Law-Track Students
• Macro Social Work

Prior fundraising or grant experience preferred but not required. Intellectual rigor and work ethic matter more.

Commitment

• 15–20 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment required
• One-year commitment strongly preferred

We are seeking candidates interested in building something long-term, not short-term resume padding.

Leadership Advancement Pathway

This fellowship is designed as a direct pipeline into future compensated leadership roles.

Fellows who complete a minimum of one year and demonstrate exceptional strategic contribution will receive priority consideration for future paid Development Director or senior operational roles as funding expands.

As Domestic Truth Foundation grows, this position has the potential to evolve into a compensated executive-level development position.

What You Will Gain

• Direct mentorship from executive leadership
• Real experience designing nonprofit revenue infrastructure
• Competitive grant positioning exposure
• Corporate partnership strategy experience
• Executive-level portfolio work
• High-impact leadership designation

Confidentiality Requirement

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, selected Fellows must sign a confidentiality agreement and complete privacy training

Volunteer: Donate your used bike

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Read more: One bike donor's story

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, small children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico. When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank.

Set up the supply distribution area and check-in table at Woodland Park Community Center located at 212 Parkview St.

Check-in volunteer participants (participants will register on volunteerhouston.org where they will agree to a liability waiver). Provide Park history overview and safety/procedure briefing to participants.
