Volunteer: Trash Capture CommitteeCome help us advance a concept for eliminating floating/drifting trash in Little White Oak Bayou through Woodland Park! Keeping Woodland Park Nature Preserve clean is an on-going challenge for the community. Regular cleanup events help, but the amount of trash and debris that finds its way onto the banks of Little White Oak Bayou and into trees and shrubs is unmanageable. Our goal for the coming year is to determine a path forward and kick off a feasibility study. We're looking for 1-5 people with related experience and/or anyone willing to learn! You'll need research and analytical skills, aptitude for talking tech, and ability to talk with local officials. Expectations: One person will serve as lead/Director. Per our bylaws, this person must be a member of Friends of Woodland Park. Review options evaluation prepared in 2012 and funded by Bridgestone. Gain awareness/understanding of flood mitigation plans for Little White Oak Bayou and plans to reconstruct culvert under I-45 as part of TxDOTs North Houston Highway Improvement Program (NHHIP). Identify best practices used by other organizations in the Houston area and beyond. Work with FWP board and other stakeholders and experts to identify one or more preferred concepts for further exploration. Options could include short term (pre-NHHIP) solutions and long term (post NHHIP) solutions. Draft scope of feasibility study for preferred concept(s). Identify lead organization(s) to implement a pilot or ongoing project, and funding required. Support lead organization in pilot/project implementation. Volunteer: Project Saving SmilesProject Saving Smiles reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in underserved children and remove barriers to learning. This is accomplished by providing dental screenings, dental sealants, fluoride varnish, and oral health education free of charge targeting Houston’s at-risk 2nd graders who are enrolled in schools with 50% or more students on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The 2001 Dental Needs Assessment in Harris County revealed 68% of 2nd graders had untreated decay. It is known that children who suffer from oral health problems cannot learn well and miss days from school. According to the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illness. Additionally, children who experience pain from tooth problems are likely to be distracted and unable to concentrate on their schoolwork. Since its inception, Project Saving Smiles has provided dental screening to 98,800 students and applied 217,878 sealants. The Project also provides oral health education free of charge to pre-k, second grade, middle school and high school students enrolled in a free or reduced lunch program across Houston. We very much appreciate your interest in Project Saving Smiles and look forward to having you volunteer with us! Best regards, Volunteer Coordinator Team Agency: Houston Health Department Project Saving Smiles reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in underserved children and remove barriers to learning. Volunteer: Software Development Artificial Intelligence VOIP- Programming Machine Learning ApplicationAI-Powered CRM and VOIP platform (uses Machine Learning)- Our non-profit will first begin with building the front-end User Interface (UI). Data quality is an often overlooked success factor in prospecting. Sales departments lose hundreds of hours and monetary value per sales rep from using bad prospect data. Most companies know that their data is a problem, but few realize the high costs involved with ignoring it Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be provided per student dependent upon the completed contribution and milestones SOLUTION We are building an AI-powered CRM that integrates with open source VOIP system. Twilio or Asterik can be used for API integration for VOIP part of application. Machine Learning will also be integrated to "teach" the system how to follow up with a company's customers or end-users. CSR= Customer Service Rep 1. Call comes in and CSR answers 2. Call is recorded and transcribed using an AI tool like JOG.AI (the whole conversation will be transcribed in company’s CRM) 3. AI determines important areas of customer calls based on Keywords that the Customer says like "Sign Up" or "I am frustrated" or "I would like to cancel my service" 4. Based on the keywords stated by Customer, the company’s platform will generate a suggested plan of action along with a template to respond via Email or SMS Examples include: If (customer says "Sign Up") then (AI will suggest emailing "Sign Up" form template) --this will ensure management that the appropriate customers looking to Sign Up for a service receive the appropriate follow up and should increase overall sales and reduce lost leads If (customer says "I would like to cancel my service" or "I want a refund" or "I’m really unhappy/not happy with the service I received") then (AI will suggest emailing or sending an SMS for a free month of service to try to keep customer) Company CRM platform will automatically add the Customer’s name and voice transcription into a Record. The Record will also contain all logs of emails and texts with the Customer in chronological order so any CSR and Manager can see the entire lifecycle of Customer communication end-to-end. Volunteer: Volunteer Gallery Hosts for Hillerbrand+Magsamen Exhibition at FotoFestFotoFest uses signup.com to schedule volunteer shifts--Click here FotoFest is pleased to announce its fall exhibition, Hillerbrand+Magsamen: nothing is precious, everything is game, on view from October 8 through November 22, 2025, in Houston at its Silver Street Studios gallery. This exhibition is a mid-career survey of Houston-based artists Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen, celebrating 25 years of collaboration. It is curated by Steven Evans and Madi Murphy. Collectively
known as Hillerbrand+Magsamen, the duo transforms the
everyday into the extraordinary—turning household items, family rituals, and
suburban chaos into playful, profound reflections on art, life, and
togetherness. Their
practice embraces a playful and inclusive approach to art-making, rejecting
notions of exclusivity in the art world. Houstonians will know Stephan from his many years teaching photography at UofH and HCP. Mary was the curator at Aurora Picture Show and is currently working at the Menil Collection. Gallery Hosts are the backbone of FotoFest, they allow us to keep the exhibitions open to the public. You don’t have to be a photography expert to be a gallery host; a friendly face, neat appearance, and an interest in photography is all that is required. A FotoFest staff member will greet you in the gallery, review procedures, and give you a tour of the building and the exhibition.
Volunteer: Get Your Hands Dirty at the Community Garden! All gardeners and amateur gardeners welcome! Wesley Community Center is home to the Lorraine Street Gardening Club. The land surrounding our Food Pantry is equipment with 14 garden beds and is also home to a hive of bees to help with pollination. We take a central planning approach and garden all plots together, maximizing the plots for the gardeners' benefit and the clients of the pantry. Because of this, we ask that you meet with our lead garden volunteer before beginning planting. The garden is unique in that half of what we harvest goes to the food pantry to fill the grocery carts of those less fortunate in our community. The other half is split among the gardeners. The garden is open anytime the food pantry is open (9-3 T - S) and maintains a socially distanced garden get together on Saturdays.
