Volunteer: FosterFostering a needy pet is a richly rewarding experience. It's also an emotional, often difficult experience that isn't for everyone - but for those that can do it, it's an experience that won't soon be forgotten. Houston Humane Society is always in desperate need of foster families, especially right now. First, let's talk about what kinds of pets may need foster care:
Sick and injured pets - Because HHS is an open admission shelter, meaning we do not turn away any animal, we often take in animals that are too sick to go up for adoption. Some of them need a quiet place to recover as well as some additional care.
Too young! - HHS often takes in animals that are simply too young, or may even still be nursing. Sometimes they just need a couple of weeks, while others may need a few months.
Behavior - Often an animal that has been neglected or may be too timid needs a couple of weeks with a foster to learn that being with people can be a good thing. Sometimes pets at the shelter just need a break, and a foster home can give them a quiet place to de-stress.
We provide the medical care, you provide the loving home. We will work with you on what kinds of animals you can care for and your schedule. https://www.houstonhumane.org/volunteer/foster-application Agency: Houston Humane Society Fostering a needy pet is a richly rewarding experience. During the 10-week program, the volunteer will be trained in, and implement, the fall and/or spring sessions of What About Me? a course that helps girls ages 9-17 deal with essential health and self-esteem issues, including setting goals, body image, healthy relationships, health, and nutrition. During the 10-week program, the sessions will be held once a week for approximately 1 hour - 1.5 hours for ten consecutive weeks. All interested volunteers must be 18 years or older and complete a background check. Our What About Me? and Women’s Health Advocacy Program classes are facilitated by female volunteers due to the sensitive nature of their content. Volunteer: Transition Coach (Mentor) for a youth preparing to age out of foster careThe Need Transitioning from adolescence into adulthood can be a challenging time for any teenager but even more so for a youth aging out of the foster care system. All too often, they are entering the real world without the resources, skills, knowledge or even a plan in place needed for independent living. As a result, many will be at a greater risk of dropping out of school, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, or having a criminal record. However, having a caring and trusted adult in their lives can help change this outcome for many. How You Can Help A Transition Coach is a caring, responsible, adult volunteer who serves as a trusted guide to a youth, currently living in foster care, who is close to aging out of the system. The goal of the Transition Coaching Program is to match this population of youth with trained, transition coaches (volunteers) who will guide them in developing transition plans that help them reach their desired goals. The coach will also help the youth explore viable options for them with regards to education and/or employment as well as offer support as they navigate their road toward adulthood. How it Works Volunteers are matched with a youth, age 14 or older, to assist the youth in developing their transitional goals and to offer additional support outside of the foster care system. The volunteers meet with the youth a minimum of twice a month in the youth’s current placement or in some other agreed upon public setting. The volunteer and youth will develop a meeting schedule that works for them. Youth live across greater Houston and all surrounding areas. Training and ongoing support are provided. To become a Transition Coach, you must be willing to commit at least a year to the youth with whom you ae matched, attend an orientation and training session, submit a completed volunteer application, participate in a personal interview and pass a criminal background screening. Orientations are held each month, alternating day time and evening sessions. Please contact Laura Meares at laura.meares@harriscountytx.gov for more information. Volunteer: Caring Volunteers needed for Hospice Patients in the Alvin AreaVolunteers are needed to spend time with our hospice patients. We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patience, loving volunteers to spend time with our patients. They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need. Our offices are in Clear Lake and the Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Alvin Area. Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. You can give these people a final dignity in their darkest hour.
