Volunteer: Get Your Hands Dirty at the Community Garden!

All gardeners and amateur gardeners welcome! Wesley Community Center is home to the Lorraine Street Gardening Club. The land surrounding our Food Pantry is equipment with 14 garden beds and is also home to a hive of bees to help with pollination.

We take a central planning approach and garden all plots together, maximizing the plots for the gardeners' benefit and the clients of the pantry. Because of this, we ask that you meet with our lead garden volunteer before beginning planting.

The garden is unique in that half of what we harvest goes to the food pantry to fill the grocery carts of those less fortunate in our community. The other half is split among the gardeners. The garden is open anytime the food pantry is open (9-3 T - S) and maintains a socially distanced garden get together on Saturdays.

Volunteer: Invasives Beware

One of our goals at Jones Park is to support native wildlife by returning the forest to its native state. Historically, this area was a mix of prairies and woodlands with a more open understory. This ecosystem is dependent on disturbance, which at one time would have been provided by bison grazing and fires caused by either lightning, indigenous people, or settlers. The exclusion of these disturbances has created unregulated growth of invasive plant species that choke out native trees and grasses.

By manually removing the overgrown and non-native plants, we can recreate the effect of natural disturbances like grazing and fire. This allows for regeneration of the historical understory and mid-story vegetation, which can then be supported by planting of additional native trees. Increasing native plant diversity leads to an increase in the diversity of insect species, which then results in an increase in the diversity of birds and small mammals, too.

Join the Jesse Jones Park Eradicators to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitats of Jones Park. Invasives Beware! meets in the Nature Center at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month.

Volunteer: Google Analytics Specialist Needed

The Houston Community ToolBank is looking to add Google analytics to its website to drive website intelligence and improve our online presence. We’re hoping a volunteer could show us how to monitor website performance, trends, and campaigns, generate reports, and update pages for site optimization. We may need help maintaining and trouble-shooting in the future, after the analytics has been set up but our goal is to be able to learn to do it ourselves. We would provide a laptop and a work area. We are flexible with the timing, and open to remote work if necessary. We would prefer Google analytics as this seems like the most user friendly, but if someone with more experience has other ideas, we would be open to tutorials on better website traffic tracking programs.

Volunteers in this role can take on one of two tracks.

Direct Services Volunteer Training Event Planning. Each year we host 2 region wide training "institutes" so that volunteers can take a number of disaster response and leadership courses over the of just a few days.                                          Strategic Planning for Capacity Building Work with disaster territories within the region to help identify classes and volunteer growth needed to meet readiness goals

The volunteer should plan on average of 5-10 hours per week and have ability to come in to the main Houston office during business hours periodically.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to finish application then we can proceed to the next step and do a 15 minute interview to make sure we find the right fit!
