Young Homeowners League is a 501c3 nonprofit to empower high schoolers and other youths to work, save, buy land, build starter homes, and become young homeowners.
Revolving fund will be used to acquire lower priced land to develop into lots, with target cost $30k each.
Our first focus area is within the City of Houston with sewer line, and our second is communities within a one-hour commute of Houston.
We organize youths into project teams with experienced members to build starter homes, 1000 to 1400 sqft size, starting $120/sqft.
Young team members earn the majority share (80%) of project labor costs, with experienced members receiving 20%.
Team members have priority to purchase the homes they help build, at cost.

Role Description
An Affordable Homeownership Champion is an unpaid volunteer role, unless actively participating in construction work, in which case compensation comes from the experienced members portion (20%) of labor costs.
Champions can contribute in one or more of the following ways:
1. Help future homeowners, including yourself, plan to work, save, build credit, invest in land, support the construction of starter homes, and prepare for homeowner.
2. Support or supervise construction teams (ideal for teachers, retirees, tradespeople, or business professionals) building starter homes, especially part-time or during summer.
3. If you own land or a home and need a shed or smaller home built, consider placing an order through our project teams. Shed reference $35/sqft. Home within 1400 sqft reference $120/sqft
4. Help connect us with organizations offering grants or low-interest loans for our land revolving fund.
5. If you can put money into our revolving fund as a loan, let’s talk.
6. Help design starter homes that are attractive, efficient, using lower cost materials, and easier to build especially for less experienced youths.

Key Responsibilities: Monitor the financial health of the organization and review financial statements, budgets, and financial planning documents.

Budgeting & Reporting:

Oversee the development of the annual budget and ensure financial reports are accurate and timely.

Present regular financial reports to the board.

Compliance & Controls:

Ensure compliance with tax and financial reporting requirements.

Monitor internal controls and financial risk management practices.

Support Staff/Finance Team:

Work closely with the Finance Director/Manager, if applicable.

Support fundraising and grant management from a financial oversight perspective.

Key Responsibilities:  To lead the board’s efforts in securing financial resources to support the mission of the organization.

Fundraising Strategy:

Develop and oversee the organization’s fundraising strategy in collaboration with staff and the board.

Set fundraising goals and ensure the board is actively engaged in reaching them.

Donor Engagement:

Cultivate relationships with major donors, sponsors, and supporters.

Encourage and support board members in their fundraising and donor stewardship roles.

Campaign Leadership:
Lead or support capital campaigns, annual giving, grant efforts, and special fundraising events.

Reporting & Monitoring:

Monitor fundraising performance and report progress to the board regularly.

Identify opportunities for growth and diversification of funding sources.

Board Recruitment & Orientation:

Lead the recruitment, nomination, and onboarding of new board members.

Ensure new members receive appropriate orientation and training.

Organize ongoing training and development opportunities for board members.

Facilitate regular evaluations of board performance (individually and collectively).

Policy & Compliance Oversight:

Review and recommend updates to bylaws, policies, and governance procedures.

Ensure adherence to board roles, responsibilities, and ethical standards.

Advise the board and executive leadership on legal issues affecting the organization.

Identify legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and legal protections are in place.

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensure compliance with nonprofit laws, employment law, tax law, and other regulations.

Monitor and support filings such as IRS Form 990, charitable registrations, etc.

Policy Review:

Assist with drafting and reviewing policies related to governance, ethics, data protection, whistleblower protections, and conflict of interest.

Inclement Weather Plan:  Reschedule Notice Will Be Given  In Case Of Weather Implications

Want to get outdoors and lead people? Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 4-6 people to manage logistics and materials for park work days. Volunteers annually remove 10-15,000 pounds of trash from the Little White Oak Bayou floodplain within Woodland Park.

FWP usually sponsors 7 community work days annually (Jan, Feb, Mar, April, Sept, Oct, Nov) plus Earth Day (corporate weekday event, April).  Scout projects may also require support. 

Friends of Woodland Park is an all volunteer organization and this is a volunteer opportunity. 

Expectations:

Cleanups are generally held on Saturday mornings, with occasional weekday cleanups for corporate groups. 

With help from the Beautification Director and FWP board, team members will identify supplies and tools needed using provided checklists. Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank. 

Team members will gather equipment from storage located at 2515 Washington Avenue and any other supplies (such as snacks) and ensure that committee members can receive them on clean-up day or prior.  

Set up the supply distribution area and check-in table at Woodland Park Community Center located at 212 Parkview St. 

Cypress Assistance Ministries is putting on its annual Merriment at the Ministry, our Christmas toy and gift distribution.  Registered families sign up in advance and complete a form with their information and a wish list for each child.  For Merriment the families will come to Cypress Methodist Church, where will we use their Wishlist to shop from our selection of donated gifts.

We have a number of tasks we need help with during the week of Merriment.  This includes unloading and
unpacking donations, selecting gifts, checking in clients, loading presents into vehicles, etc.

The Greeter will welcome people to the shelter, ask them what they need, and then provide basic details about adopting (including our adoption process), fostering, volunteering, or donating (depending on what the visitors has stopped in for). PetSmart Volunteer – We have some of our cats that show at the PetSmart cattery on South Shepherd and always need more volunteers who are interested in helping socialize the cats, clean the cages, feed the cats, and answer questions from the public.

Volunteers sort, assemble, and distribute grocery items for walk-up or drive thru clients. Volunteers may also help by registering clients using Houston Food Bank qualifications.

Make a lasting impact in the life of a young person in foster care! Academic Coaches help students ages 14–17 build organizational skills, study skills, and provide homework support, while offering encouragement and consistency they can count on.

Youth in foster care often face major educational disruptions—frequent moves, multiple schools, and a lack of stable support. By volunteering just a few hours a week, you can help bridge that gap and empower them to reach their potential.

Training and ongoing support are provided. Sessions take place at Residential Treatment Centers across the greater Houston area, with flexible scheduling during out-of-school hours.

Our mentoring program is designed to support the growth of our students on the fields, in school, and in life. Mentors are matched with a SpringSpirit participant in grades 3-12 and commit to meet in person at least once a month.  Mentors must submit to a background check and go through an orientation process before being matched with a mentee.  2 locations in Northern Spring Branch.  

Help young people aging out of foster care successfully step into adulthood. As a Transition Coach, you’ll mentor and guide youth (ages 14+) as they create transition plans, explore education and career options, and build the skills they need for independence.

A caring adult can make all the difference for a youth who may not have consistent support. By meeting once a week, you can help them set goals, stay motivated, and navigate life’s next steps.

Help a child who is reading below grade level. Volunteers needed to work with elementary-age children once or twice a week on Zoom.  Program moderator creates virtual breakout rooms.  Volunteers work with small groups (2-4 students) from 4:30 to 5:30 one day a week. Simple lesson and materials provided for you.  

Groups meet twice a week on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Volunteers would need to commit to only once a week visits with their group of children for at least one semester. One hour training provided before you start as well as a background check. Program has proven results in improving student reading levels.  

Wesley's Food Pantry needs volunteers for our drive-up food pantry to help our Houston neighbors who are in desperate need of food.

This Holiday Season make a difference in a teen's life by SHAREing your heart & home with a high school exchange student! Volunteers, with or without children at home, are needed to host teenage boys and girls from Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mongolia, Japan, and several other countries. Families can review student applications and choose the boy or girl that matches their family. SHARE! students speak English, come medically insured, and have their own spending money for personal expenses. They attend the host family’s local high school for a school year or semester.

Volunteers at our front desk help the front desk staff with their day-to-day activities— answering the phones, returning messages, interacting with visitors, answering questions from the public, keeping up with the calendar, directing people to the right place for appointments, getting the appropriate people for appointments and interviews.

There are different administrative tasks we could always use volunteers to help with. If you are good with data entry type work, this may be the right fit for you!

Front desk volunteers are never left on their own at the front desk, they will always have a staff member working with them.

The HMC is proud to be home to soccer programs for our refugee youth. The Eagles (boys) and The Golden Eagles (girls).

The teams meet and play on the first and third Saturdays of each month, at the IndoorSoccerBox, located at 1530 W Sam Houston Pkwy N. Beginning in November, we'll be meeting at Burnett Bayland Park in Southwest Houston.

We are looking for someone with soccer experience to serve as a referee and informal coach to help facilitate 1 hour of girls soccer. It is a very casual league, the girls would benefit from the experience of someone 18+.

Volunteers are needed for the Texas Challengers Quiz Tournaments (TCQT) middle school and high school Quiz Bowl tournament at Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions on Saturday, December 13. Most volunteers will serve as moderators and read questions to the students. Moderators will need to complete a quick 10-15 minute training before volunteering. Volunteers can also serve as scorekeepers. Training for scorekeepers takes about 5 minutes. Free pizza will be provided for lunch. Partial shifts are welcome.

This role would include a myriad of intensive training, background checks, and team support. In this role, a volunteer would provide compassionate support and education in regard to pregnancy and parenting. 

Hermann Park has two wonderful prairie exhibits. Each exhibit was formed from rescued plant species native to the Houston metro region. Volunteers are needed to help edge the area, weed, and assist with moving plants to create walk ways through the prairie for visitors to get a closer look at the many species of Texas native prairie grasses and wildflowers. Native prairie plants in this exhibit where rescued from surrounding areas within the Houston metro region. Tools and materials will be provided. Participants will use shovels to move or transplant grasses. A chance to see what much of Houston looked like years ago, as part of a tall grass prairie system. Bring your cameras for close-up pictures of some amazingly beautiful native plants.   Takes place on Saturdays, please email to confirm. Lives can be saved through your involvement with a program that channels badly needed medical supplies to Developing countries. You can support the program by leading other volunteers who sort and box these items at a collection and distribution center in southwest Houston. Medical professionals -- nurses, doctors and medical assistants -- are ideal candidates, as are retirees. A minimum of five hours a month is all that is required.

Nurses (working/retired/students) are desperately needed by Project C.U.R.E.   We process donated medical supplies and equipment for donation to hospitals in developing countries.  Volunteers sort the donated supplies and nurses are always a huge asset to our work.    Nurses bring much needed expertise and can also serve as team leaders for other volunteers who inventory, sort, and pack the materials in preparation for shipment. The nurses' medical expertise helps insure that the teams correctly categorize and group the materials. Duty shifts can be arranged for weekdays or weekends. 

BIOMEDICAL/Mechanical/Electrical engineers and technicians are desperately needed at Project C.U.R.E.   We send surplus medical supplies and equipment to developing nations. Make it a special day with Notes of Encouragement! We all love cards and special greetings! But our clients don't usually receive mail that is positive and uplifting. Your notes will be placed in client mailboxes or on bunk beds to bless, uplift and raise the self-esteem of who are homeless. You can use any type of card you prefer. Plain cardstock cut into fourths works great. You can simply pen a note or decorate the cards with markers, colored pencils and/or stickers. In other words, volunteers can unleash their compassion and creativity. Notes can be all occasion or seasonal. Notes do not need to be signed. DFSH Outreach Volunteer make follow-up calls to clients in order to track those that have had a first suiting, but have not returned to Dress for Success Houston for a second suiting, or for Job Search 101. The volunteer’s conversation will directly impact the client and the agency as they will ask and document various questions while guiding the client to various programs that are dependent on their current circumstances.

The River Oaks Job Connection Center is in need of a volunteer(s) to help clients with use of technology in the computer lab. The ideal candidate would be able to teach basic technology classes with provided curriculum, help with job searches, filling out online applications and overall monitoring of the lab.

Hours: 10 am - 2 pm Monday through Friday. Other times may also be considered.

The Computer Lab Assistant will help train and prepare clients of Goodwill Houston’s programs and services for job search and employment by maintaining the operation of the computer lab, instructing clients in the use of computer lab technology and software applications, and by monitoring client activities in the job connection computer lab.

Hermann Park Conservancy’s Job Shadow Program supplies students (age 13 to 17 years) the opportunity to observe and participate in a variety of work related activities.  The Job Shadow Program can enhance a student's understanding of careers in conservation and provide them with the opportunity to work alongside an experienced employee who can answer questions and provide accurate and timely advice. Job Shadow Program participants will gain knowledge, skills and an understanding of Hermann Park Conservancy. Through this experience, students will see the connection between school and the workforce.  Parents and students should attend the orientation in July (date to be determined)  from 9am to noon. Program runs for 4-5 weeks Wednesday through Friday and some Saturdays 9am to 3pm.  Application and waiver required. MUST BE A NON SMOKER.  Responsible for recruitment of task force members and processing membership agreements from the key sectors of Galveston County community members.  Must develop a strong familiarity of the Tobacco Task Force's logic model and functionality.  Responsible for the basic understanding of the Task Force organization structure.  BACODA's policies and procedures, and Task Force programmatic policies and procedures.  This is a volunteer position, not a paid position. Functions: Responsible for contacting key sector community members, for serving as a liaison between the Task Force staff and the community, to provide current and accurate information about the Task Force. Now, you can!  Available positions are needed to teach highly motivated adults who are seeking to better their English and life skills. Many are learning English for specific purposes such as: a better job, to help their children in school, or to earn their citizenship.  Citizenship classes help prepare students for their naturalization test. Interested volunteers should be able to read, write and speak English fluently.   It is not necessary to be bilingual to be an instructor, assistant or tutor. As an ESL/Citizenship volunteer you are asked to be available for a specific amount of time dependent on the volunteer role that suits you best.  Volunteer applicants must have the ability and willingness to teach English in a patient, respectful manner to people of all walks of life. Previous experience greatly appreciated but not necessary. Teacher training and classroom observation always available. Evening classroom assistants needed immediately.

Volunteers are needed to teach basic computer skills to a wide variety of clients. Must know basic computer skills, like keyboarding, setting up and using e-mail, how to use a search engine, using the internet to explore job opportunities, using MS Word to create and edit resumes, online job applications, MS Word and Excel basics, and social networking. Volunteers will also need the ability to teach these basic computer skills. This volunteer opportunity requires patience and the ability to  work at least one scheduled ½ day shift per week, either mornings from 9am to 12:30pm or afternoons from 12:30pm to 4pm.. You will have one-on-one interaction with motivated adult clients.

Volunteers are needed for our resale shop to assist customers, sort and price donations, operate the cash register, work on displays, make simple repairs on merchandise or research items on Ebay. Your volunteering will directly help fund MAM programs, which assist struggling families in time of need. You directly help the surrounding community with your efforts. Youths under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by an adult to volunteer. No previous experience needed.

Memorial Assistance Ministries is in need of a group of strong individuals for a manual labor project for one day. A detention pond next to our faculty is overgrown and we need a group to help us get it back under control. MAM does not have the equipment needed to fix this problem. So all equipment: weed-eaters, mowers and any other landscaping equipment would have to be brought to our faculty.   

We are looking for volunteers that have cashier experience and a sense of ‘high fashion’ to help run the Boutique, MAM’s premium high end fashion shop. This is a store within our MAM resale store, selling items such as designer clothes and purses, as well as items with original price tags, and packaging. Volunteers will monitor merchandise, provide customer service and run the cash register. Volunteers will even have the opportunity to develop displays and help with the overall visual aspect of the Boutique.

The Employment Follow-Up Volunteer serves as a key support to the Employment Services Program by conducting telephone follow-up calls to clients of the program. Through follow-up phone calls MAM seeks to determine each client’s employment status, the effectiveness of our program and/or to offer additional support and guidance to those who remain unemployed or those in new jobs who need additional support. Three-hour shifts are available five days a week. Calls are made on company telephones in a climate-controlled office environment. Volunteers will not meet with clients in person.
