This position supports the Regional Communications and Public Affairs department. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity. Red Cross Bloggers and Feature Writers are a part of a creative content volunteer team that creates professionally-written content for news releases, media alerts, and regional platforms including blogs, social media feeds, websites and other outlets.

  • Responsibilities

    • Follow the Communications calendar to research, perform interviews, write and post blog stories within deadlines. Blog posts are typically 300-500 words and must be cleared by regional communications staff.
    • Write human interest stories that highlight the work of volunteers, leaders, donors, disaster victims, etc. Feature stories are typically 500-1,000 words and may require telephone interviews or face-to-face interviews.
    • Develop other written materials such as press releases, presentations, editorials, messaging, speeches, and newsletters. Bank "evergreen" stories for use at a later time.
    During Disasters:
    • Work with Communications team to identify stories, conduct interviews, write and post on a daily basis; focus on client stories and service delivery.
    • Interview clients, partners, and Red Cross workers. Share story ideas with media relations and social engagement teams.
    • May be asked to shoot photos with your smart phone if a photographer isn't available. Secure signed information release forms.

        • Reliable access to resources needed to volunteer 100% virtually

        • Strong writing, editing, research and interpersonal skills.
        • Must be familiar with basic computer operations and have the ability to upload content to the blog or by email remotely.
        • Authentic, creative, funny and engaging storyteller.

      Volunteer Frequency:  Monthly
      • Relationships

        Communications, marketing and development staff, Red Cross volunteers, and community partners.
