Volunteer Job Description:

YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the Y of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston’s significant refugee and immigrant communities.  We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. As our Employment Services Marketing Volunteer, you will work with the Employment Services Director and the Vocational Training Liaison to develop projects that enhance and highlight our career enhancement services to showcase client success and celebrate their achievements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reach out to Vocational Training (VT) and Recertification participants to gather information about their background, progress and career projection after graduation and/or job attained.
  • Plan and coordinate creation of yearbook for VT and Recertification participants
  • Draft yearbook entries about each participant
  • Coordinate photo session with each VT and Recertification participant
  • Facilitate release of yearbook on social media platforms in coordination with employment staff and Director of Community Relations
  • Plan and facilitate graduation ceremony for VT and Recertification participants
  • Maintain systematic communication with VT Liaison and Employment Director

Overview:

  • Volunteering must take place during our office hours of Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, between 5-10 hours per week
  • Volunteer will report directly to and be trained about refugee services by the VT Liaison, and the Employment Coordinator or Director when VT Liaison is not available

Qualifications:

This position requires a mature and creative individual who:      

  • Volunteer must have knowledge of or an interest in English, Marketing/Communications, or Public Relations
  • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space
  • Has some knowledge of the non-profit sector
  • Is dependable, self-motivating, uses time effectively, has high energy and enthusiasm, and is a creative thinker in handling new tasks.
  • Possess some knowledge of root causes of international refugee crises

Ability to speak and understand a refugee language is a benefit.
