Volunteer Benefits & Resource Navigator

Description

Volunteer Benefits & Resource Navigator

Help individuals and families connect with the resources they need.

The Bridge Pantry is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and organized volunteer to assist individuals and families with accessing public benefits and community resources.

The Volunteer Benefits & Resource Navigator will receive training to help clients prepare for resource appointments, understand application requirements, gather needed documents, and follow up on applications for programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, food assistance, utility assistance, housing resources, transportation assistance, and other community services.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial resource intake appointments with individuals and families.
  • Review application checklists and help clients identify missing information or documents.
  • Explain the general application process for SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, and other assistance programs.
  • Help clients organize identification, income verification, household information, and supporting documents.
  • Assist clients with accessing approved online application portals and resource directories.
  • Schedule resource appointments and provide appointment reminders.
  • Make follow-up phone calls to check on application progress and additional client needs.
  • Connect clients with food, housing, healthcare, employment, transportation, utility, and emergency assistance resources.
  • Document appointments, referrals, follow-up dates, and outcomes in the approved tracking system.
  • Refer complex questions or urgent situations to pantry leadership or the appropriate agency.

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal volunteer is patient, compassionate, organized, and comfortable speaking with people who may be experiencing financial hardship or other difficult circumstances.

  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Comfortable making phone calls and conducting scheduled appointments.
  • Able to follow written procedures and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic computer, email, and online form skills.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
  • Social services, healthcare, case management, customer service, counseling, or community outreach experience is helpful but not required.
Training will be provided. Volunteers will be trained on approved intake procedures, available community resources, application checklists, confidentiality requirements, documentation, and when to refer a client to a qualified agency representative.

Time Commitment

Approximately 3–5 hours per week. Volunteers may assist with scheduled in-person or virtual resource appointments, follow-up calls, appointment reminders, and administrative documentation.

Important Volunteer Guidelines

This volunteer position provides application support, resource navigation, and general information. Volunteers do not determine eligibility, promise approval, provide legal or medical advice, or represent themselves as employees of SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, or any government agency.

Volunteers must protect client confidentiality and use only approved systems and procedures when handling personal information. Applications may only be submitted with the client’s knowledge and authorization.

Help Make Resources Easier to Access

This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants to help individuals and families navigate community resources with dignity, patience, and support.
