Overview

The Pevoto Mentoring Project will provide high quality one-on-one mentoring to adults experiencing homelessnessMentors will provide at least 3 hours of one-on-one mentoring per month, for a period of up to one year. All mentoring matches will be carefully monitored and supported by Star of Hope Staff.  Throughout the duration of the program, participants will also have access to a broad range of services including employment and training services, financial coaching, mental health counseling, substance abuse programming, housing assistance, and Christ-centered biblical counseling.

Through participation in the mentoring program, Mentees will:

  • Practice identifying big picture goals or intentions for themselves (financial, career, academic, health, or personal).
  • Practice identifying concrete strategies or steps to better align their daily habits and activities to support their goals or intentions.
  • Develop skill in setting realistic goals and taking action.
  • Identify barriers (practical or personal) to achieving a goal, and problem-solve in advance.

·        Develop help-seeking skills and personal supports which may help them beyond the time-limited scope of the program.

Benefits of Mentoring

Mentoring relationships are a shared opportunity for learning and growth. Many mentors say that the rewards they gain are as substantial as those for their mentees, and that mentoring has enabled them to:

  • Have fun.
  • Achieve personal growth and learn more about themselves.
  • Improve their self-esteem and feel they are making a difference.
  • Gain a better understanding of other cultures and develop a greater appreciation for diversity.
  • Feel more productive and have a better attitude at work.
  • Enhance their relationships in their personal lives.

Above all, a good mentor is willing to take the time to get to know their mentee, to learn new things that are important to them, and even to be changed by their relationship.

Mentor Requirements

Ideally, we will target prospective mentors with excellent listening and communication skills, well established community ties, at least five years of sobriety (if in recovery), and solid professional networks. All prospective mentors, regardless of background, will need to be 25 years or older and able to drive and/or access public transportation. They must also agree to undergo a criminal background check, a face-to-face interview and other screening procedures, and to participate in an orientation and training program.
