Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 1-4 people to help us secure funding to support our 15 for 15 projects celebrating our15-year anniversary!  This an exciting way to make a generational impact on a unique park and bayou environment in central Houston.

1-2 people will serve as Grants Directors(s) and will liaise with the board more regularly. Directors must be members of Friends of Woodland Park, per our bylaws.

Expectations include: 

Identify grant opportunities with help of FWP board members.

Review selected grant opportunities with relevant Houston Parks and Recreation Department personnel for support or permission (ie, affidavit) to apply.

Prepare grant applications: includes writing responses to questions, assembling
responsive documents with help of board members, securing application fees if needed,
seeking final review from board members and submitting completed application.

Commitment: Minimum 1 year

We are seeking compassionate, mission-aligned volunteers to support the launch of our Rising Oaks Youth Enrichment Program, serving children with incarcerated parents. Our children often face emotional hardship, instability, and limited support systems. Through structured, Christ-centered youth enrichment experiences, we help them build resilience, confidence, life skills, and hope for their future.

Want to get outdoors and lead people? Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 4-6 people to manage logistics and materials for park work days. Volunteers annually remove 10-15,000 pounds of trash from the Little White Oak Bayou floodplain within Woodland Park.

FWP usually sponsors 7 community work days annually (Jan, Feb, Mar, April, Sept, Oct, Nov) plus Earth Day (corporate weekday event, April).  Scout projects may also require support. 

Friends of Woodland Park is an all volunteer organization and this is a volunteer opportunity. 

Expectations:

Cleanups are generally held on Saturday mornings, with occasional weekday cleanups for corporate groups. 

With help from the Green Team Leads and FWP board, team members will identify supplies and tools needed using provided checklists. Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank. 

Team members will gather equipment from storage located at 2515 Washington Avenue and any other supplies (such as snacks) and ensure that committee members can receive them on clean-up day or prior.  

Set up the supply distribution area and check-in table at Woodland Park Community Center located at 212 Parkview St. 

Check-in volunteer participants (participants will register on volunteerhouston.org where they will agree to a liability waiver). Provide Park history overview and safety/procedure briefing to participants.

The Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is seeking a Garden Director as a non-voting member of
FWP with responsibility for the garden areas surrounding the community center, Firefly Field
garden, the entrances to Woodland Park and other possible areas in the future. The Garden
Director will liaise with one or more FWP Board members. Attendance at FWP board meetings
is not required unless requested by the board. A commitment of 12 months is preferred.

Expectations Include:
Maintain all current beds which may include adding more plants as needed.
Oversee design of future beds.
Work with volunteer coordinator to solicit volunteers and organize seasonal workdays for garden maintenance.
Coordinate with Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop leaders if they ask to volunteer for required
required service hours.
Suggest to the board new ways to enhance the attractiveness of the park using plants.
Consider the creation of educational activities for children focused on gardening.
Follow Houston Parks and Recreation Department guidelines for garden maintenance and hosting events.

Commitment: 1 year minimum is preferred

Celebrate Earth Day with us by helping spruce up Woodland Park and Nature Preserve and Freed Art and Nature Park. At the same time, participate in the international event called Nature Challenge by taking photos of wildlife you see in the park. 

We'll collect trash and conduct trail maintenance (cut vines, spread mulch, mark trails).

We will provide gloves, trash grabbers, bags, tools, water, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray. 

We recommend you wear long pants, closed toe shoes that can get dirty and a hat. 

Do you enjoy chess? Are you an avid player, either competitively or recreationally? We have the volunteer opportunity for you! Bayou Village School is a small non-profit elementary school located in the Near Northside community. We have a fledgling chess club, started last year under the supervision of parent volunteers. Chess club participants are in 2nd-6th grade (ages 7 through 11). Typically there are 10-15 students who participate. Two parent volunteers are present for each chess club gathering for behavior management and hands-on support. 

We are seeking a person or people with chess awareness and ability- you do not have to have prior experience as a chess coach (but it would be a plus!) Students in our chess club have a good mastery of the basics and are ready to take their play to the next level. Chess club meeting days can be flexible- we typically meet twice a month from 3:30-5pm. Days can be selected that work with the coach's schedule! 

The Mission Success Mentorship Program goal is to connect students with mentors who provide guidance, career exposure, and life skills development. The program emphasizes strong, authentic relationships by incorporating structured mentorship meetings and low-stakes activities for engagement.

Key Goals:

Support personal & academic growth through mentorship.

Provide professional networking & career exposure through internships.

Foster meaningful mentor-mentee connections through shared activities.

Mentors will be paired with a mentee student who is a high school junior or senior, or a post-secondary/college student.

Volunteers will assist with planting and maintaining 14 raised garden beds that grow a variety of fruits and vegetables using organic practices. The garden supports our community pantry, with 98% of the harvest donated and 2% available for volunteers to take home.

Volunteers will help care for the garden year-round, including watering, weeding, harvesting, and protecting plants based on weather conditions. The pantry is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and on the third and fourth Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Currently, we have two volunteers who assist once a week and one volunteer who helps more frequently, and we are looking to expand our volunteer team. No prior gardening experience is required—just a willingness to help and learn!

Musicians On Call (MOC) brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients, families and caregivers in healthcare environments. Musicians On Call (MOC) needs YOU to help us spread the healing power of music to those who need it most!  Volunteer Guides (non-musicians) escort Volunteer Musicians room to room as they play music for patients, families and caregivers in healthcare environments. The Volunteer Guide acts as the "eyes and ears" during the MOC Bedside shift and is the liaison between the hospital, patient, and the Volunteer Musician. Volunteer Guides are critical to the success of MOC Bedside and get to experience the healing power of music firsthand without having to be a musician themselves!  Volunteers must commit to volunteering once a month (2 hr shift) for at least one year. Microsoft Word – Digital Literacy Class

Do you love technology and enjoy helping others gain confidence with digital tools? Are you fluent in English and Spanish and comfortable offering live translation or tech support?

We’re seeking bilingual volunteers to assist with our 10-week Microsoft Word course for adult learners. Volunteers may help participants navigate computers, understand key Word functions, and encourage learners as they build valuable digital literacy skills. No teaching experience required—just patience, kindness, and a love for sharing knowledge!

Time Commitment 

Volunteers are requested to commit to teaching for the length of the semester. It can be multiple classes on Tuesday and Thursday or one class, one day a week.

Our ESL program follows the academic year schedule, August through May, with breaks for holidays and in between semesters. 

We believe this time commitment is necessary to foster relationships based on trust, respect, and the love of Christ, and will allow the volunteer to see the direct benefit of their role as a mentor/tutor.

Black United Fund of Texas is cohosting an event with TWST4Girls to tech students about conservation, the history of Houston’s Fifth Ward environment and give them hands on experience in gardening principles.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with event set up and event clean up. This will involve setting up tables and chairs, ensuring stations have materials and provide general support to the staff and educators at the event.

The event will start at 10am. If you are wanting to assist with event set up, please arrive by 9am. If you are wanting to assist with event clean up, please arrive by 12pm. We plan for volunteers to contribute for an hour during the set up and an hour during clean up. 

Volunteers are welcome to stay and participate in the event as well if they would like!

Supporting young performers build confidence and creativity through acting, voice, and dance in a fun, supportive environment. At Camp Pop, young performers will dive into the vibrant world of pop music, learning high-energy dance moves, catchy songs, and storytelling skills that sparkle. This camp is all about confidence, creativity, and FUN—perfect for kids who love to sing, dance, and express themselves in a theatrical way. By the end of the week, campers will hit the stage for show-stopping performances that are bursting with color, music, and excitement!

Volunteers are needed for setup, registration, traffic control, and to load food/relief items into vehicles as they drive through. The volunteers are needed from 7am-12:30pm. Partial shifts are acceptable.

All minors will need a Minor Waiver. Seven years old is the minimum age for distribution days, anyone 7yrs to 13 years of age must have an adult accompany them  Please complete the Minor Volunteer Waiver for anyone under 18.

Bread of Life. Inc. is located on the campus of St. John's UMC Downtown at 2019 Crawford St., Houston, TX 77002. The distribution takes place behind the church, underneath the Pierce Elevated. Parking for volunteers is available in the parking lot across the street from the church on Gray St., all other parking is metered Mon - Sat until 6pm, (with the exception of Jackson St. where street parking is free).

Target Hunger had to close many of its brick-and-mortar pantries due to COVID-19. We began delivering prepackaged boxes of food to our client's homes, in partnership with Door Dash. This partnership with Door Dash is coming to an end so we are trying to switch our clients over to our mobile pantries. Staff has expressed the need of volunteers specifically on Tuesdays usually from 9am to 11am. Volunteers in the pantry will help pantry staff guide client's shopping, the restocking of the mobile pantry, and assist clients to their cars. Bilingual preferred. Prefer a reoccurring volunteer.

Performing Arts Houston requests volunteer support for the following Blue Man Group events:

Come and volunteer at the Target Hunger Food Pantry on Senior Pantry Day!

Volunteers will assist with checking in clients, clients while they shop, keep the shelves stocked, and properly weigh client's groceries. Our pantry staff needs assistance on the first and third Tuesday from 8 am - 12 pm at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center Target Hunger food pantry. A reoccurring volunteer is preferred. Bilingual in Spanish is also preferred, but not necessary.

Purpose:  Serves as a volunteer for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center mobile drives and community events.

Are you handy with basic woodworking tools? Do you want to make a direct impact in your community?

The Houston ToolBank is seeking reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to help with wood cutting and preparation for our build projects, including picnic tables, garden beds, and other community-enhancing structures.

As part of our Wood Cutting & Prep Crew, you will:

Use tools like table saws and miter saws to make accurate, basic cuts

Prepare lumber and materials needed for builds

Help organize and stage cut pieces for crew use

Assist with light cleanup around the workspace

We welcome volunteers who:

Are comfortable using or willing to learn basic woodworking tools

Can follow safety guidelines and work well as part of a team

Are dependable and ready to help bring projects to life

Previous experience is a plus but not required

Flexible volunteer shifts available between open hours (Monday-Friday 9am-4pm)

Typical sessions are 2–4 hours

The Houston Community ToolBank keeps thousands of tools in motion; powering projects, supporting nonprofits, and strengthening our city every single day. With all that impact, some wear and tear is bound to happen!

That’s where you come in. We’re looking for a dependable Tool Maintenance Volunteer to help repair and maintain tools so they can get right back out into the community where they’re needed most

Equipment you may work on:

Generators

Power washers

Lawnmowers

Tillers

Other small engine equipment

Typical tasks include:

Carburetor cleaning and repair

Replacing spark plugs

Diagnosing issues and swapping worn or broken parts

General small engine maintenance

Time Commitment:
Flexible! Ideally once a week or every other week, depending on your availability.

Looking for a way to give back, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with your community? Our 12 community gardens need volunteers to help with planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and general upkeep. Whether you have a green thumb or just want to lend a hand, your time and effort will help create thriving spaces for everyone to enjoy. Gardens are open Monday – Friday and with special requests on weekends for large groups.

This volunteer position Is the beginning of the check in process of the clients. Volunteers will receive referrals from clients seeking assistance with obtaining identification documents then enter it into the database.

Volunteers interview individuals needing documents of identification. They will do the paperwork, do the research, and MSM will cover the cost to support clients through this process.
