Help make our House a Home!  Ronald McDonald House - Holcombe House is a 70 bedroom, free-standing House available for stay to families with seriously ill children being treated in the Texas Medical Center. 

Two Volunteer Positions Available:

1. House Warmer – Create a warm, homelike culture throughout the House by serving and engaging with our residents. Volunteers serving in this position will primarily be up and moving throughout the House during the shift completing tasks such as:
- Provide a listening ear and visit informally with family members in common areas
- Assist family members and group volunteers with loading/unloading belongings
- Sharing our mission by providing tours to visitors and group volunteers
- Restocking snacks, making coffee, and helping our community kitchen stay organized and clean for our families
- Orienting families and group volunteers on kitchen use instructions
- Assist with sorting, organizing, and documenting donated items
- Restocking family bedrooms in preparation of new family check-in
- Assist group volunteers in orienting them to our House
- Helping orient new families to our House by helping them find kitchen materials, assisting with the checkout of bikes, play equipment, video game controls, etc.
- Giving tours to new families

2. House Concierge – Give family members and visitors an awesome first impression of the House by providing a warm welcome! Volunteers in this position will be primarily stationed at the front desk, assisting the manager-on-duty, welcoming and sharing information with our families and visitors. Volunteers will provide information and resources to guests and visitors by completing tasks such as:
- answering the phone and giving needed information about RMH, transferring calls as necessary
- welcoming and signing-in group volunteers
- assisting House Manager with clerical work
- assisting with occasional administrative projects from other departments
- selling merchandise
- paging to make House announcements
- welcoming visitors for meetings with staff, communicating with staff members about their arrival
- assisting with shuttle sign-up
- giving directions and sharing information on nearby resources
- sorting mail and facilitating package pick-up 

Holcombe House Volunteers make a 3 month commitment in our "Fast Track" or a 6 month commitment to serve in our "Traditional" track. Volunteer opportunities are available from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. seven days a week. Shifts are scheduled in 3 hour time blocks.

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Ronald McDonald House Houston Volunteers in our Fast Track commit to one shift per week for a minimum of 3 months.  RMH Houston Volunteers in our Traditional Track commit to serve two shifts per month for a minimum of 6 months.

ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION

ROLE PURPOSE

RMH Houston inside Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) offers volunteer positions in both the House (for overnight stays and naps) and family lounges (providing snacks and other resources). The TCH House and Lounge Volunteers maintain the RMH Houston in TCH and   provide compassionate support for those who have children in the Neonatal Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care Units of TCH.

SCHEDULE

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are seven days a week, 9 am - 12 pm, 12 pm - 3 pm, 3 pm - 6 pm, and 6 pm - 9 pm.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will vary depending on the needs of the House during each shift but may include:  

      HOUSE VOLUNTEER

Preparing guest rooms for overnight guests and nappers Registering, providing orientation, and giving tours to guests Informing families of the House policies and enforcing when needed Preparing linen packets Assisting House Manager with light administrative duties 

      FAMILY LOUNGE VOLUNTEER

Cleaning and stocking house lounges Informing families of the House policies and enforcing when needed Assisting with delivery drop-offs

SCHEDULE

This position is for Fall 2021, requiring a minimum of 180 hours. Shifts are available Monday-Thursday during the 3:00pm – 8:00pm timeframe. The internship will last from approximately August 23rd – December 6th. Scheduling accommodations may be made for the right candidate

INTERNSHIP PURPOSE

• Assist in the continued development and implementation of our Family Support Services program utilizing the Family-Centered Care model. This program will be intentional about providing support and resources to families and creates a caring, supportive, and joyful environment for all.

• To directly serve both families and patients by designing, facilitating and supporting Family Activities programming (age level support/activity groups) and at least one (1) Special Event that provide a caring, supportive and fun environment for all the families in the House.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Further develop Family Activities Program (age level support/activity groups). Manage and support by helping design curriculum and facilitating age-appropriate activities for residents of Holcombe House.

• Assess current curriculum, revise, or create new material, and implement programming within the Family Activities schedule. This could be completed through creating and utilizing educational handouts and brochures, presentations, programs, social media, and/or special events.

• Create and plan at least one Special Event for families during the semester. (i.e. Wellness Day; International Fair, outdoor field day, carnival, etc).

• Assist RMHH staff with chaperoning off-site field trips, as COVID restrictions permit.

• Assist with meal service to families, as needed.

• Assist with and provide support to volunteers and staff assigned to supply inventory and organization.

• Capture photos and stories for use on RMH Houston social media page, within RMHH photo release and privacy guidelines.

• Assist with translation and interpretation of documents, helping non-English speaking family members enroll and participate in RMHH programs, as able.

• Attend Operations department and interdepartmental staff meetings, as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to communicate compassionately with patients/families on a one-on-one basis.

• Interacts comfortably and gracefully with patients who may be very ill and their families including parents, siblings, grandparents and other caregivers.

SCHEDULE

This position is for Fall 2021, requiring a total of 200 hours with no more than 20 hours per week. The position will be on location and the specific schedule will be based on student’s availability and agency needs. The internship hours will need to be completed by December 7, 2021. INTERNSHIP PURPOSE

The Family Activities Intern provides administrative support to the Family Activities Manager. Responsibilities include scheduling family activities, coordinating with volunteer groups, correspondence, and general clerical support. The Family Activities Coordinator supports the core values, goals, and objectives and the mission of Ronald McDonald House Houston as set forth by the Board of Directors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Report hours to supervisor each week, for approval and collaboration purposes.

• Uphold the policies of Ronald McDonald House Houston

• Provide warm, friendly and timely communication with RMH Houston staff, volunteers, donors and families utilizing services

• Schedule and coordinate family activities for RMHH Holcombe House location, work with Family Activities Manager to arrange hybrid programming to hospitals as required.

• Work closely with all RMH Programs to coordinate and schedule activities

• Update and maintain Outlook calendar for programming

• Assist staff in orientating group volunteers to policies and procedures and ensures compliance of the same Assist staff in ensuring that groups’ needs are addressed prior to arrival, materials are organized and easily accessible

• Assist staff in preparing, maintaining, and storing supplies and collateral, as needed

The Welcome Desk Volunteer creates a warm, hospitable environment for our families by ensuring they are cared for during their stay.  By providing families with the physical items they need for a comfortable stay and providing a listening ear, we help families feel welcomed, known, and supported. Welcome Desk Volunteers help lower the stress of parents and family members in a time when support is needed the most and create a hopeful and secure environment in our home away from home.

SCHEDULE

ROLE PURPOSE

For RMHH families, consistently eating nutritious meals during their hospital stay can be a huge challenge. The financial burden combined with the thought of leaving their child’s bedside to grab a bite to eat can be terrifying. JoyFull Eats, RMH Houston’s meals program, helps alleviate hunger by providing quick, healthy food options for families. The JoyFull Eats intern contributes to the success and growth of the JoyFULL Eats program at all four RMHH locations by providing hands-on assistance, engaging with donors, helping with outreach, and providing administrative support.

 

LOCATION

SCHEDULE

Available for fall, winter, or summer start dates. Specific schedule will be based on student’s availability and agency need. Evening and weekend availability is preferred.

 

COMPENSATION

This is an unpaid internship unless you have been awarded college work/study funding. If hired, compensation is up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.

The program aims to provide a true home away from home by offering as many normative family experiences as possible.

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are Monday - Thursday 5 pm-8 pm, Friday 4 pm-7 pm, and Saturday 10 am-1 pm.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will vary depending on the needs of the House during each shift but may include:

Preparing supplies for house activities Setting up, facilitating, and cleaning up Family Activity Programs Hosting community groups and helping with their involvement in activities Playing and engaging with children and teens Restocking Grandma’s Closet items Organizing donations into storage spaces Greeting and visiting with guests

ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION

Ronald McDonald House Houston (RMH Houston) offers a home away from home providing care, compassion, and hope to families with seriously ill children being treated in Texas Medical Center member institutions.

 

 

ROLE PURPOSE

The JoyFull Eats Volunteer leads donor groups in the set-up, serving, and breakdown of meals and organizes food donations in the pantry. RMH Houston’s guests spend long hours at local hospitals and a warm lunch or dinner is a welcome distraction from a child’s complex medical treatments. By providing nutritious meals and a listening ear, we make sure our families will feel welcomed, known, and supported. JoyFull Eats volunteers help lower the stress of parents and family members in a time when support is needed the most and create a hopeful and secure environment in our home away from home.  

 

 

LOCATION

Ronald McDonald House Houston, Holcombe House, 1907 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030

 

SCHEDULE

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are seven days a week, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm for lunch and 4:30 pm- 7:30 pm for dinner.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will vary depending on the needs of the House during each shift but may include:       

      MEALS

Welcoming donor groups to the House and assisting with check-in Giving a short tour of the space and sharing information about the mission of RMH Houston Explaining dinner serving process and assisting with set up of donated food Announcing the meal to families on intercom Educating group on how to prepare to-go boxes with leftovers after the meal Overseeing and assisting with the group clearing the serving area Thanking donors on behalf of RMH Houston Assisting with or serving a meal when a donor group is short on people

 

      DISTRIBUTION CENTER AND KITCHEN PANTRY

Opening and breaking down incoming boxes of snacks and supplies Sorting, dating, and documenting incoming donations Restocking snacks and pantry items in community kitchen and the distribution center area Checking community fridge for expiring foods and organizing Breaking down larger servings into individual size servings for the families on site Helping families find materials and utilize resources in family kitchen

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to relate to families and children of various ages and cultural backgrounds Ability to comfortably engage with patients and families of seriously ill children Excellent interpersonal skills Focuses and does not lose sight of the task at hand Self-starter who takes initiative and can work independently Enjoys actively listening to family members Receptive to feedback, coaching, and experimentation Collaborative team-player excited to join a small, hard-working team

 

REQUIREMENTS

At least 18 years old Complete a background check Complete general orientation and specific role training

ROLE PURPOSE

The Family Activities Intern will assist in the continued development and implementation of RMH Houston’s Family Activities Programs. The intern will provide support and resources to families and help create a caring, supportive, and joyful environment. Daily activity programming gives children a place to be “just a kid” and helps children and parents adapt to being uprooted from their normal environment. These programs are intentionally designed to build rapport, create community, and build security and confidence. Activities include supervised imaginative play, recreational activities, field trips for the family, and self-expression through music, movement, and art.

Ronald McDonald House Houston, Holcombe House, 1907 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030

 

SCHEDULE

Available for fall, winter, or summer start dates. The program requires 180 minimum hours for the semester, including one special project. Shifts are available Tuesday to Friday 12 pm – 8 pm and Saturday 10 am – 2 pm. Specific schedule will be based on student’s availability and agency need. Accommodations may be made for the right candidate.

 

COMPENSATION

This is an unpaid internship unless you have been awarded college work/study funding.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will vary depending on the needs of the Family Activities Manager but may include;

Coordinating individual volunteers and volunteer groups helping with activities Collaborating in the review, revision, planning, and implementation of programming Creating, planning, and facilitating at least one special project Assisting RMH Houston staff with chaperoning off-site field trips Coordinating volunteers and staff assigned to organize inventory Capturing, uploading, and cataloging photos and stories for RMH Houston media use Attending Operations Department and interdepartmental staff meetings Supporting data entry for grant funded components and in-kind giving

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to relate to families and children of various ages and cultural backgrounds Ability to comfortably engage with patients and families of seriously ill children Basic knowledge of child development to adapt programming for varying needs Outgoing, a good listener, and detail oriented Demonstrates good judgment, flexibility, dependability, and self-motivation Strong verbal and written communication skills Comfortable completing research and communicating findings

 

REQUIREMENTS

Must have completed at least four semesters of college in degree applicable to role Successful completion of background check Prior experience managing children in school or camp setting preferred

ROLE PURPOSE

The Family Support Services Intern will assist in the continuous development of RMH Houston Family Support Services activities, providing support and resources to families and creating a caring, supportive, and joyful environment for all. The intern will help orient and assess families upon admission and provide supportive services from the time a family checks in until they check out. The intern will facilitate Fun Clubs (age level support/activity groups), supervised play, and one cultural event. Family Support Services activities include educational support, behavior management, support groups, access to community resources, recreational activities, and parenting education. These services help stabilize the family unit, empowering them to actively participate in their child’s health care journey.

SCHEDULE

Available for fall, winter, or summer start dates. The program requires 400 total hours and a minimum of three available days per week. Shifts are available Monday-Friday 10 am – 7 pm. Specific schedule will be based on student’s availability and agency need.

 

COMPENSATION

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will vary depending on needs of the Family Support Services Manger but may include;

Establishing relationships, building community, and providing supportive services Researching and updating resources in the Family Support Services Resource Bank Participating in developing new onboarding materials for staff and volunteers Co-facilitating groups with Family Services Manager and Family Activities Manager Launching age-appropriate supportive activities for patients and families such as supervised play, camp, and Fun Club Participating in Family Support Services program evaluation and improvements Participating in online training opportunities as directed

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to relate to families and children of various ages and cultural backgrounds Ability to comfortably engage with patients and families of seriously ill children Outgoing, a good listener, and detail oriented Demonstrates good judgment, flexibility, dependability, and self-motivation Strong verbal and written communication skills Comfortable completing research and communicating findings Comfortable co-facilitating discussion for small groups

 

REQUIREMENTS

Currently enrolled in a Master’s level Social Work educational program Successful completion of background check Not required but very beneficial: fluency in Spanish or other language
