At Halo House, there are a lot of things that need to be done – answering phones, assisting guests, moving in new residents, pulling weeds, minor repairs, and everything in between. Whether you want to volunteer with a group or just on your own, we have something for everyone.

Our Mission: Halo House Foundation supports blood cancer patients and their caregivers by providing affordable, fully furnished, temporary apartment housing to enable access to lifesaving treatment in the Texas Medical Center.

Our Vision: One day, no one battling blood cancer will have to worry about where they are going to live during treatment in Houston, or going bankrupt while paying for living, eating and parking expenses here, and their rent or mortgage back home. We believe that providing a “home away from home” and easing the family’s financial burden, their focus can be directed toward healing.

Qualifications: We are looking for people with good verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge of Word and Excel, familiarity with the Halo House website and services we offer and who want to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Experience you DON’T need: Information systems, knowledge of blood cancers, knowledge of doctors or other existing housing facilities in the Texas Medical Center, or apartment management experience.

Qualifications: We are looking for people with a passion for gardening. You can assist with any of the following- spray plants and trees as needed to treat or prevent insects, weed gardens, prune plants and flowers, trim trees, rake leaves, and plant new flowers.

Game night Bring snacks/refreshments, coordinate time and day, coordinate what games to be played, bring games if halo house cannot provide them Provide and serve a dinner for our residents Provide and serve a lunch for our residents Host a cookie decorating class Art – host a painting/coloring/scrapbooking/crafting event

Who can serve as an on-call maintenance resource to Halo House when issues arise. For example- AC/thermostat not working, lighting fixtures need replacement, pipes leaking, washer/dryer not working, dishwasher not working, garbage disposal not working, parking gate not working, building doors battery replacement, building painting (doors, walls, gates), etc. Who can conduct routine maintenance checks- pipes, AC/heating, air filtration, pest control, dryer vent cleaning, greasing door locks and hinges, fire extinguisher and fire/smoke detector check/replacement, parking gate functions, wrapping pipes in the winter, etc.

Qualifications: We are looking for people with a knack for decorating to decorate our facility during the holidays (Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving). Decorations are put up at the beginning of the month and taken down at the end of the month.
