Volunteer: Food Donation Pick-up DriversCypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) is partnering with some area grocery stores to help provide food for our food pantry. We just need some helpful individuals to pick up the donations from these retailers and help deliver them to CAM's facility. Programs like this are wonderful resources for CAM, as they help us source items that would be otherwise difficult to source (such as bakery items and produce), and they help reduce food waste in our community. Volunteers must have access to a vehicle suitable for transporting food items (an SUV or minivan would work perfectly, a sedan with sufficient trunk space would work as well). We will provide insulated bags. Agency: Cypress Assistance Ministries Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) is partnering with some area grocery stores to help provide food for our food pantry. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that other shelters don't offer. If you truly love dogs and want to learn more about how to care for them, this opportunity is for you!As a dog behavior volunteer, you will help provide various enrichment needs to our dogs (think kongs and nose work!). Enrichment volunteers are essential to help improve the daily lives of our dogs at the shelter.* Our Behavior volunteer program is a five-step program, and you'll start out as a BV1 volunteer (behavior volunteer - level 1). Our behavior program is truly one-of-a-kind. You'll learn such much, like how animals communicate, different types of enrichment, how to read body language, learning theory, and so much more. Current Behavior Dog Volunteer shifts from from 2-5PM every day - including weekends. Sign up today to help our dogs get the socialization and enrichment that they deserve! Volunteer: Trash Capture CommitteeCome help us advance a concept for eliminating floating/drifting trash in Little White Oak Bayou through Woodland Park! Keeping Woodland Park Nature Preserve clean is an on-going challenge for the community. Regular cleanup events help, but the amount of trash and debris that finds its way onto the banks of Little White Oak Bayou and into trees and shrubs is unmanageable. Our goal for the coming year is to determine a path forward and kick off a feasibility study. We're looking for 1-5 people with related experience and/or anyone willing to learn! You'll need research and analytical skills, aptitude for talking tech, and ability to talk with local officials. Expectations: One person will serve as lead/Director. Per our bylaws, this person must be a member of Friends of Woodland Park. Review options evaluation prepared in 2012 and funded by Bridgestone. Gain awareness/understanding of flood mitigation plans for Little White Oak Bayou and plans to reconstruct culvert under I-45 as part of TxDOTs North Houston Highway Improvement Program (NHHIP). Identify best practices used by other organizations in the Houston area and beyond. Work with FWP board and other stakeholders and experts to identify one or more preferred concepts for further exploration. Options could include short term (pre-NHHIP) solutions and long term (post NHHIP) solutions. Draft scope of feasibility study for preferred concept(s). Identify lead organization(s) to implement a pilot or ongoing project, and funding required. Support lead organization in pilot/project implementation. Commitment: minimum 1 year For more information, contact Jennifer Ostlind, FWP Volunteer Coordinator, at Jennifer@friendsofwoodlandpark.org . Volunteer: Project Saving SmilesProject Saving Smiles reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in underserved children and remove barriers to learning. This is accomplished by providing dental screenings, dental sealants, fluoride varnish, and oral health education free of charge targeting Houston’s at-risk 2nd graders who are enrolled in schools with 50% or more students on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The 2001 Dental Needs Assessment in Harris County revealed 68% of 2nd graders had untreated decay. It is known that children who suffer from oral health problems cannot learn well and miss days from school. According to the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illness. Additionally, children who experience pain from tooth problems are likely to be distracted and unable to concentrate on their schoolwork. Since its inception, Project Saving Smiles has provided dental screening to 98,800 students and applied 217,878 sealants. The Project also provides oral health education free of charge to pre-k, second grade, middle school and high school students enrolled in a free or reduced lunch program across Houston. We very much appreciate your interest in Project Saving Smiles and look forward to having you volunteer with us!
