Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Holiday Data Entry Support - Helping seniors, refugees and interfaith programming

Can you help Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IM) thank it's supporters? Houstonians are so generous that we need extra help keeping track of the donations that are sent in and help getting the thank you letters out as quickly as we can during the holiday season! IM feeds 4,000 seniors every day through Meals on Wheels, helps welcome refugee families into their new lives and organizes interfaith programming.

We could use help entering data from new and returning donors! It can be as complex or easy as your background allows. Help making copies, stuffing letters and other light administrative support is also needed, but not required.

We are also very flexible with hours.  If you could help between 2-10 hours a week until the New Year, that would really help!! The work does need to be done onsite in our office in Midtown. Parking is really easy!

The need is critical now, but there is a similar need all year round.

Volunteer: Social Media Guru for our 2021 Virtual March for Marrow TX 5K Run & Walk

As patients and family members we are so busy taking care of our patients - or ourselves in this period of COVID-19. In order to promote our work on our 2021 Virtual March for Marrow, which will include a Virtual 5K Run and Walk as well as an online raffle, we need a clever and committed Social Media Guru.

We have a lot to learn and would love to learn from younger, smarter and more clever young people from the Houston area.

In addition, we are trying to go paperless – although we do have a great flier featuring our 2021 Star, Nicholas Smith, who just went through a bone marrow transplant. We are open to advice as to how best to use it. But it seems social media is the best way to go.

Our 2021 VIRTUAL March for Marrow 5K Run & Walk will run for 7 days from Saturday, March 27 to Saturday, April 3, 2021.

Our schedule for Saturday, 3/27/2021, Sunday, 3/28/2021, and Saturday, 4/3/2021, will run for about 2 hours, 9:00 am to 10:30 or 11:00 am.

Monday, 3/29/2021 to Friday, 4/2/2021, will only be 1 hour – perhaps 1 ½ hours.

There will be the Kick-Off including sounding the start of the 5k and Patient and Family Walk – complete with selfies. We will have a couple of doctors speak and a couple of patients telling their stories.  We hope to attract a couple of high school groups – bands and or a cheerleading squad – all with proper social distancing.

On Saturday, April 3, we will hold our Moment of Remembrance and Closing Ceremonies, catch up with our 5K Runners and have them log in their times and announce our Top Fundraisers and our Raffle WINNERS!

Volunteer: LEADER needed to make sure people have food to eat after large disasters.

Your American Red Cross is looking for leaders at both the Regional level (covering the 51 counties along the Texas Gulf Coast) to take on the preparedness roles of ensuring we have feeding plans in place for medium and large scale disasters. They will also provide  leadership to Disaster Cycle Services workers in performing feeding activities during preparedness, response, and recovery within a Region.

The ideal candidate is willing to contact local area vendors to create feeding agreements with negotiated rates. They will be friendly, personable, computer savvy and have the charisma of a salesperson you WANT to buy from. Ability to activate during a disaster to lead the execution/implementation of the feeding plan (for a 2 week assignment) is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

Feeding provides snacks, meals, drinks and water using Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) or other vehicles on routes within the impacted area or at a fixed location such as community center.

This position is responsible for the collaborative leadership of the feeding program within the region including:
1. Oversee overall feeding program, ensuring feeding guidance is observed
2. Ensure effective, collaborative planning for feeding operations in the region, including documenting the plan and keeping it current
3. Ensure adequate supplies for feeding operations in the region
4. Ensure adequate partnerships are pre-identified to address feeding needs identified in regional plans, including requirements for regional, cultural, and health-related dietary requirements, coordinating feeding operational plans and managing expectations around feeding capability, capacity and reporting
5.Build feeding capacity and capability through partnerships, recruitment, training and mentoring
6. Serve as a Red Cross subject matter expert in feeding program guidance and tools

Qualifications: Ability to build and lead a team using a collaborative leadership style and demonstrating traits of honesty, forward looking, competence, intelligence and compassion. This Lead will envision a team’s impact in Mass Care and inspire the team into action. They will ensure the team understands how they fit into the larger DCS structure and how their actions can positively influence and support the DCS Program as a whole.

Time Commitment: Is around 10-20 hours per month with additional time needed initially to learn feeding protocols and procedures. Again, ability to activate during a disaster to lead the execution/implementation of the feeding plan (for a 2 week assignment) is highly desirable. (The Red Cross will cover travel, room and board when deployed for a disaster response.)

Volunteer: Career Mentors Needed

The majority of iEducate´s college students are not studying to become teachers and are planning on entering a variety of different careers after they graduate. But while they are in college, they are giving back to the community by helping to close achievement gaps and inspire 3rd – 5th grade students in underserved schools.

To help these students, many of whom are first-generation college students, iEducate is looking for 20 career mentors to help them navigate their industry, lean more about skills needed in their profession, and advise them as needed to help them be successful.

To facilitate the mentorship, iEducate will be hosting an event in March to match our students with career mentors on specific career paths.  During this reception, you and the college students will have a chance to chat to see if there is a good connection and then develop the mentor/mentee relationship after that. Your mentorship will help provide business perspective and industry insight to these highly talented and community minded college students.  The students you mentor could be some of your best future recruits!

Thank you for your support!

Volunteer: Volunteer House Chef

CrossWalk Center needs a volunteer or a team of volunteers to help prepare a daily hot meal for the residents of our halfway houses. We are blessed to receive food donations each week, and with the help of volunteer house chefs, we can make the most of those gifts. The 24 men living at our halfway houses are just beginning their transition back into society after incarceration. As they are adjusting to their new job, new home, new friends, and new lives, preparing a hot, healthy meal can become a priority that slips through the cracks.

Our house chefs bless our residents with a home-cooked meal each day after work. It is our hope that individuals or teams could come into our halfway houses and prepare a meal from the donations we have already received. We don't require any professional experience, we just need willing hands and a servant's heart. Our homes are equipped with fully stocked residential kitchens, so you won't need to use your own cookware. For your convenience, volunteers can come during the day to prepare the food, leaving it in the warmer or the fridge until dinner, or come on the weekends, meal prep in bulk, and leave individual containers in the freezer.

Volunteer: Driver

CrossWalk Center clients need transportation to and from work. We currently run two halfway houses in Houston's third ward and all 25 of our residents are employed. We have partnerships with local businesses that employ a majority of our residents. We need help getting groups of 5 or 6 men to and from their job sites Monday through Friday. Our house manager doesn't have the capacity to drive around town and serve our men well. We are looking for volunteers to help with daily pick-up and drop-off. Our residents work shift work and they usually need to be on the job site by seven and get off around five. Volunteers must be able to pass a background check and have a clean driving record.

We take a central planning approach and garden all plots together, maximizing the plots for the gardeners' benefit and the clients of the pantry. Because of this, we ask that you meet with our lead garden volunteer before beginning planting.

The garden is unique in that half of what we harvest goes to the food pantry to fill the grocery carts of those less fortunate in our community. The other half is split among the gardeners. The garden is open anytime the food pantry is open (9-3 T - S) and maintains a socially distanced garden get together on Saturdays.

Volunteer: Invasives Beware

One of our goals at Jones Park is to support native wildlife by returning the forest to its native state. Historically, this area was a mix of prairies and woodlands with a more open understory. This ecosystem is dependent on disturbance, which at one time would have been provided by bison grazing and fires caused by either lightning, indigenous people, or settlers. The exclusion of these disturbances has created unregulated growth of invasive plant species that choke out native trees and grasses.

By manually removing the overgrown and non-native plants, we can recreate the effect of natural disturbances like grazing and fire. This allows for regeneration of the historical understory and mid-story vegetation, which can then be supported by planting of additional native trees. Increasing native plant diversity leads to an increase in the diversity of insect species, which then results in an increase in the diversity of birds and small mammals, too.

Join the Jesse Jones Park Eradicators to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitats of Jones Park. Invasives Beware! meets in the Nature Center at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month.
