Volunteer: Nursing Home Ombudsman Volunteer

Be an Ombudsman (advocate) for the residents of local nursing homes and assisted living communities, and help monitor the quality of care they receive. If you have good communication skills and a deep concern for the well-being of the elderly and disabled, you'll receive in-depth training and certification that will equip you to work with a nursing home's staff and residents in mediating problems that arise. Time involved averages just a few hours a week.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Long-term Care Ombudsman Program is a federally mandated program wherein volunteers advocate for resident rights in nursing and assisted living facilities. It is jointly sponsored by city, county, and state agencies, with the lead agency being the University of Texas School of Nursing Center on Aging. Volunteers receive certification from the State of Texas, Department of Aging and Disabilities Services and are individually assigned to one nursing or assisted living facility. Volunteers have a wide flexibility in deciding whether the hours they put in would be on weekdays or weekends, during the daytime or early evening.

Volunteer: Computer Literacy Volunteer

Computer Literacy Volunteers (CLV?s)are needed to teach basic computer skills to MAM Employment Services clients. Our CLV?s are expected to bring a strong user?s knowledge of computer basics (basic computer skills, keyboarding, setting up and using email, google searching, using the internet to source job opportunities, using MS Word to create and edit resumes, online job application, tutoring MS Word and Excel basics, and social networking ? especially LinkedIn). The ideal CLV will have not only strong knowledge of the use of computers, but also an ability to communicate and to teach what he/she knows to people who know far less about it. This job requires patience and the ability to recognize that sometimes what seems to our CLV to be a small accomplishment will be seen as an enormous accomplishment to our clients. Our happiest volunteers truly enjoy helping our clients achieve these small victories, knowing they will build into larger victories. The ideal CLV will have schedule flexibility to work at least one scheduled ½ day shift per week, either mornings from 9am to 12:30pm or afternoons from 12:30pm to 4pm. While with good communications we can provide our CLVs with some schedule flexibility, it is important that our prospective volunteers understand that our clients are relying on them to help us provide this important service M-F from 8:30am to 6pm, and CLVs working routine hours are essential to this effort. You will work in a modern computer lab with 16 workstations. It will not be your job to maintain the computers and peripherals, but rather to report problems as you observe them. When there is no client work to be done ? and occasionally there will be no clients ? we ask our CLVs to help us by adding content to our website, www.mamjobsnetwork.org. This is an easy task that is also quite interesting. While you will bring all the basic computer know-how with you, we will teach you our procedures and you will understand how crucial basic computer literacy is to our central mission of helping clients identify and overcome their obstacles to finding and keeping a steady and meaningful job. You will have hands-on one-on-one interaction with clients, with all the challenges and rewards that come with it. You should be able to pass a criminal background check.

Volunteer: Refugee Youth Translator

Each year, new groups of refugees arrive in Houston from all over the world, and many of those we serve have only been in the United States a few months. One of our biggest challenges in recruiting youth to commit to our programs is the language barrier and lack of English comprehension of both students and parents. PAIR is looking for bilingual volunteers who may assist staff in translating while trying to recruit refugees to participate in program, speak with parents, and complete paperwork throughout the year. Translator services would not be required daily but may be needed while recruiting participants. This is usually done weekday evenings or weekend mornings. Occasionally, services would also be needed while presenting program to refugee communities, filling out surveys and paperwork, and other instances throughout the year. This opportunity would allow the volunteer to engage with Houston's refugee community, improve translation abilities, strengthen a parent's involvement in their child's education, and open possibilities of mentoring a student.

Please apply through our website (http://www.pairhouston.org/vol-app/) ASAP as spots run out quickly!

Nurses (working/retired/students) are desperately needed by Project C.U.R.E.   We process donated medical supplies and equipment for donation to hospitals in developing countries.  Volunteers sort the donated supplies and nurses are always a huge asset to our work.    Nurses bring much needed expertise and can also serve as team leaders for other volunteers who inventory, sort, and pack the materials in preparation for shipment. The nurses' medical expertise helps insure that the teams correctly categorize and group the materials. Duty shifts can be arranged for weekdays or weekends.

Volunteer: Notes of Encouragement

Make it a special day with Notes of Encouragement! We all love cards and special greetings! But our clients don't usually receive mail that is positive and uplifting. Your notes will be placed in client mailboxes or on bunk beds to bless, uplift and raise the self-esteem of who are homeless. You can use any type of card you prefer. Plain cardstock cut into fourths works great. You can simply pen a note or decorate the cards with markers, colored pencils and/or stickers. In other words, volunteers can unleash their compassion and creativity. Notes can be all occasion or seasonal. Notes do not need to be signed. Volunteers can use a group name or phrase like "Your Friend", but notes should not include a name or any personal information. Not sure what to write, here a few suggestions:

Just want you to know that someone is praying for you today. Hang in there! Tomorrow will be a better day!  "Instead of giving myself reasons why I can't, I give myself reasons why I can." All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. - Walt Disney For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ? Jeremiah 29:11

Notes of Encouragement can be created at your location, at your convenience. When the notes are ready for delivery, we can often arrange a tour.

We depend 100% on our volunteers to come out with us and have a great time along with the students. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and range in age from 22 to 78 years old. All that we ask of volunteers is that they are willing to come out, enjoy the outdoors and share their stories with our students.

The students do most of the tasks such as cooking and cleaning so volunteers are really there to supervise and be mentors. We provide all of the gear and food for the weekend so all you have to bring are your personal clothes and an open mind. Some of our volunteers have years of experience in the outdoors and some have never slept in a tent. We are flexible and want to work with you to make sure you have a great time giving back to the community. Our volunteers often tell us that they grow just as much as the students while on our trips.

Please fill out an online volunteer application and we'll get in touch with you.
