Volunteer: Relatable Role Model Letters!

Girls are looking for meaningful ways to connect now more than ever, and that’s where you come in! For girls in grades 3-12, we want to include an inspiring element of connection in our Spark Kits - Relatable Role Model Letters.

So what are Relatable Role Model Letters? These page-long letters written by Girls Empowerment Network volunteers aim to inspire, encourage, uplift, and celebrate girls throughout our community. During the last several months, many of us have felt disconnected, distant, or isolated from others. Relatable Role Model Letters provide volunteers and girls a unique way of communicating and feeling connected.

Be sure to check out our Volunteer FAQs (see links below)! This document is full of tips, guidelines, and an example Relatable Role Model Letter.

To register as a Relatable Role Model Letters volunteer, visit: Relatable Role Model Letters (jotform.com)

What should be included in my letters?

The letter should be one page in length. Volunteers are asked to write a minimum of 5 different letters. We are currently asking for handwritten letters as this provides a personalized and meaningful touch.  We recommend taking 1-2 weeks max to complete your letters. We welcome decorations, colors, markers, and stickers! We suggest using a variety of bright and bold colors. Letter recipients are girls in grades 3-8 and grades 6-12 (roughly 8-13 years old and 11-18 years old). You will be able to choose which age demographic you'd like to write letters to. Ensure your writing is legible and use language that is accessible to young folks. Use inclusive language in your letters (see our inclusive language section in our FAQs!) Steer away from language about physical attributes.   Feel free to share your first name, age, city, and/or profession. Do not include any other identifying/personal information. When you have completed your 5+ letters, you will mail them to: PO BOX 3122, Austin, Texas, 78764 (ATTN: Relatable Role Model Letters). The sooner you can send us the letters, the sooner girls will be able to receive them!

What are some creative elements that you could you include in your letter?

Share your favorite inspiring quote. Write about your role model/shero and why they inspire you. Share a joke or riddle. Offer words of affirmation or mantras. Share a memory from middle or high school when you were brave, kind, or used your voice to advocate for yourself or others. Write an acrostic poem using words like girl, power, bravery, strength, etc. Create fun doodles that can be colored in and decorated. Write about how you utilize the Six Cs in your life: How are you creative?  What are your favorite coping skills?  What makes you feel confident? Who do you enjoy collaborating with?  What makes you feel like a courageous communicator?  How do you exercise your critical thinking skills?

And be sure to share your letter on social media using #GirlSpark!

Volunteer: Mask Up, Meals on Wheels!

Interfaith Ministries' Meals on Wheels Program needs your help to provide a cloth, reusable mask to each of our Meals on Wheels seniors. A standard, adult-sized mask, with soft ear loops, is recommended. We will need to have them in small bags, to ease distribution. If you prefer to bring them to us, ready to be sent out, please include bagging them, individually, in a bag that lays flat during transport (a sandwich sized baggie – either paper or plastic – should be perfect. Target sells some paper ones that are biodegradable). Feel free to get creative with cute designs, so long as we steer clear of any religious or political messaging. We serve a broad audience, so we recommend keeping it to inclusive and happy things. If you’re unsure, solid colors or striped/paisley/gingham patters are always a safe bet.

The Details:

Purchase festive, colorful, or themed fabric and make as many adult-sized masks as you like. Note: We serve people of all faiths, including those of no particular faith, as well as folks from all cultural backgrounds and political affiliations. Please avoid religious or political patterns, wording, and designs. Here's is some helpful information from the CDC regarding homemade masks: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-to-make-cloth-face-covering.html Place completed cloth, reusable masks into a sandwich-sized, sealed bag. This will minimize the number of hands that come into direct contact with the face mask between donation and distribution to our seniors. We will still advise that they wash them before wearing.

OR

Purchase adult-sized cloth, reusable masks online or at the store. Most major retailers have some for sale these days. If the masks came several to a package, please bag individually, to help us with distribution.

Email Lauren at llewis@imgh.org with any questions or to arrange drop-off of your donation. We encourage you to get your networks involved and work together to create or gather these needed items! Social distancing doesn't mean we can't work together!

Items can be dropped off to our Meals on Wheels Distribution Facility at 3202 San Jacinto, 77004. Ideal drop-off times are between 11 AM and 1 PM on weekdays. Our building is least crowded during these times. Please email llewis@imgh.org to schedule your drop-off.

Thank you for helping us continue to offer our seniors the things that they need to keep them safe and well!

Volunteer: Men Needed To Share Their Opinions Virtually

A Call to Men: Are you looking for a way to engage in the fight against human trafficking? Do you want to explore what defines male masculinity, healthy relationships, and violence prevention?

UAHT has launched a virtual Men’s Accountability Discussion Group to end the demand for sex trafficking and is looking for male participants. The group will use the Stopping Sexual Exploitation: A Program For Men (SSE) curriculum, a non-judgmental program based on principles of social justice and personal transformation. The curriculum -- and discussion group -- explore several topics like the harms of sexual exploitation, power and violence and is open to all men.

UAHT is looking for a total of 12 men to virtually participate in two separate groups -- 6 men per group -- for 10 weeks.

One group will start Tuesday, May 4, and the second group will begin Thursday, June 3.
The time commitment will be evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

Here's what previous participants had to say about the program:

“Amazing facilitators, impassioned [participants], and worthwhile and thought-provoking knowledge learned/shared!”

“It provides a wealth of knowledge and resources for EVERYONE -- an ally or victim."

If you’re interested in participating in these crucial discussions, please sign up by May 3.

PLEASE NOTE: This program does NOT require that volunteers have considered or purchased sex or engaged in sex trafficking. It is your personal insights and opinions on the subject of exploitation that we seek.

Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation Partner

Ready to change a life from the comfort of home?

Join ENGin as a conversation partner! This is a flexible and unique opportunity to make a direct  impact on someone’s life while discovering a new culture and meeting a new friend.

We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll practice English with your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us.

Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 10-12 weeks.

Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 26,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships.

Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience.

"I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up."

“Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

"This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!"

To learn more about ENGin and become a volunteer, please visit www.enginprogram.org/volunteer.

Volunteer: Volunteer: Senior Writer / Storyteller for Harvey Nexus Stories

Volunteer: Senior Writer /Storyteller for Harvey Nexus Stories Full Job Description

Public Relations and Communications

Note: Please DO NOT APPLY if you are only looking for paid employment. The following is an opportunity for flexible, part-time, volunteer work. This is a remote-from-home position with a potential for full time employment once funded. As a  501(c)3 nonprofit with a very limited budget, we are staffed principally by volunteers - skilled volunteers.

This is a volunteer opportunity and no compensation will be given for this role. Applicants are encouraged to apply who are passionate about service to the community and willing to give back in service with their time.

Senior Writer / storyteller for Harvey Nexus Inc. Stories

From the beginning, Harvey Nexus set out to be a different kind of organization. One that not only celebrates the best parts of life but also addresses the social determinants that prevent some of us, especially those in underrepresented communities from enjoying the richness and simplicity of life- we have set out to bring a feeling of community, connection, dignity  and  access to simply make a living.

We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.

The Management Team and Board of Directors at Harvey Nexus Inc. is looking for an experienced writer/storyteller with a passion for humanity, sustainability, service to the community, and those working to make the world a better place.

Do you believe that great storytelling can inspire us and bring us together? Do you have a natural curiosity that makes you want to discover the stories of families, members of the community, businesses, current affairs, nonprofits working to combat social change? Can you find a great story in the life of Harvey Nexus, find a story that captures the heart of the community? Do you enjoy consensus building and collaborating with other teams to find the best ways to bring stories to life or finding creative ways to make a business story lively? If so, you may be the right fit for the Harvey Nexus Stories team. As the team grows it's our goal to have  a group of writers, designers, editors, producers, photographers, videographers and more.

The person we’re looking for is deeply curious about people and the world around them and a heart for working toward positive change. The writer is flexible and willing to do what’s needed, whether it’s deep storytelling, a quick synopsis, crafting a social media post, writing an internal profile or, occasionally, an executive communication. This writer has a portfolio of storytelling that showcases an evocative style that inspires, motivates and moves and can help bring to life the mission and values of Harvey Nexus; and, ideally, some experience in other mediums, such as video and audio storytelling and social media.

This is a unique opportunity to join a forward-thinking, hands-on, results-driven and highly collaborative team and play a pivotal role. Things happen quickly here and the role demands a team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment. If you love to tell stories and lead by example, if you’re inspired by change and service to the community and connection, then we want to talk to you about being a part of the Harvey Nexus Stories team.

Harvey Nexus is looking for a storyteller with extensive digital writing and multimedia experience. We need someone who has experience in corporate storytelling but also great foundational chops in interviewing and reporting skills earned at a news outlet.

Ideally, the candidate will have experience at a high-visibility consumer brand or public-facing non-profit organization.

This writer will have some expertise in sustainability and a track record of compelling, human-centered storytelling.

Reporting to the President and Vice President. This position is remote but must be available during Central Time business hours.

Responsibilities:

In close partnership with the Board of  Directors, Management team and a multifunctional team of writers, designers, producers and visual storytellers, evolve and elevate the storytelling and strategy of the Harvey Nexus.  Collaborate across the company to conceive of and create compelling globally relevant stories with an authentic voice. Provide updates to our company website with a compelling story.  Ensure the newsworthiness, intrigue, authenticity, accuracy and timeliness of reported stories, always with the utmost in ethics and accuracy. Work with aplomb and on deadline within ambiguity and confidentiality. Work closely with the Public Affairs Marketing and Social Media teams to align and elevate company messages. Work closely with cross-functional teams across the company, including partner affinity networks, on storytelling. Work closely with the Harvey Nexus Partner communications team to help support internal and external storytelling. Support executive communications as needed including email.  Contribute to writing social media posts. Build relationships internally and externally, collaborate across departments and provide messaging and storytelling support for major events such as the Leadership Conferences and Harvey Nexus Annual Meeting of Shareholders. Be ready and eager to help support in whatever way that’s needed.

Qualifications

5+ years experience doing corporate storytelling for a major brand or non-profit or reporting on complex subjects through a lens of humanity at a national news outlet 5+ years professional writing experience and interviewing.  A proven commitment to multiple sourcing, fairness and accuracy paired with a nose for news / keen understanding of audience expectations. A portfolio of storytelling for diverse media channels (e.g. written word, video, audio, social media). A track record of working successfully in a global, collaborative setting. An attention to detail in both written and visual contexts and an “always on” sense of urgency, dependability and accessibility. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, digital media, marketing or a similar field. Passion for working at Harvey Nexus and making a difference in the world.

Applicants: Please provide a cover letter, resume and writing samples in your application.
