A home visitor is a volunteer who assists senior or families with children with grocery shopping, mail reading, letter writing, bill paying, picking up prescriptions and/or running errands. Volunteers in this position provide companionship while maximizing independence for clients.

Time Commitment is 2 or 3 visits a month.

Every Tuesday night people gather at the WorkFaith Dacoma office for Celebrate Recovery. Currently, about 40 people show up every week for the program. A healthy, well-balanced meal is provided to feed the attendees every week. We are looking for more individuals who find great joy in cooking and preparing food for others. 

Since making such a large quantity of food may seem overwhelming, we are suggesting that a group of people prepare a meal together. This could be a group of friends, family, co-workers, or other volunteers you may know.

Healthy meals are preferred and much appreciated by the Celebrate Recovery family. The food needs to be delivered and ready to go on Tuesdays at 5:00pm. If you think you might be interested, email us for additional details.

The Y helps newcomers restore hope, build stability, create opportunity and change futures. YMCA International Services is continuously recognized as a leader in the Houston immigrant community.

Currently, YMCA International Services is providing a family strengthening course designed to enrich connections within families by:

1) Improving family relations

2) Reducing stress and family conflicts

3) Learning how to budget and navigate the US Financial System

The classes will be conducted in Spanish, so we will need Spanish speakers that speak English and can assist in conducting the classes. Duties for the volunteer will include assisting in teaching the curriculum and assisting with coaching the family participants, which can include individual tutoring or teaching a small group. The Relationship Enhancement Course Spanish Interpreter will also conduct data collection by giving instructions on taking surveys and collecting demographic information from the participants of the classes.

We have an number of Committee positions available for Frontier Fiesta March for Marrow. The first one is Recording Secretary. This volunteer joins us for all of our Conference Calls beginning Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 9:00 am. and records the minutes and distributes them to the committee. We have Conference Calls about once every two weeks with various parts of the Planning Committee but we try to keep them all on the same days, either Monday or Tuesday, once or twice a month.

The Nature Discover Center is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic individual who has a passion for science, nature, and children to volunteer with our field trip program. This volunteer will work closely with our staff naturalists and other volunteer teachers to lead our discovery-based field trip program Nature at Your Doorstep. A Door-to-Door Assessment of the flood affected areas. A questionnaire is utilized to determine the resident’s immediate recovery needs and to start the process on the long-term rebuild. Teams will be given packets for each home that was affected with important contact information and assistance.

Assist with organizing flood files and contacting residents. Provide assistance to individuals that come into the office to utilize the computers or fill out paperwork. Answer phones and provide support to office staff.

Assist with inputting assessments and contact information into the system. Verifying ownership of property through the Fort Bend County Central Appraisal District.

Assist with getting supplies to the work sites, picking up supplies from the POD (Point of Distribution) sites, running to the store for supplies. This individual must have access to a truck and/or trailer.

Our clients are refugees and recent immigrants, so many have a hard time knowing what to do in order to navigate their way through our healthcare system. Our clients often struggle with the process of scheduling a doctor appointment, getting their prescriptions filled, getting lab work done, etc. A few of our clients suffer from poor health literacy skills. Health literacy is the ability to read, understand, and effectively use basic medical instructions and information. YMCA International Services is currently seeking community volunteers, nursing students, or pharmacy technicians to help educate our clients on certain aspects of our health care system.

A few duties of the Health System Volunteer Navigator will include showing clients how to refill a prescription over the phone and/or accompany the client to pick up their medication. You will show client’s how to state one’s name and DOB in order to pick up the medicine. If necessary, show bus route if the pharmacy is too far from home. Training will be provided. 

As a Health System Volunteer Navigator, you will be giving our clients the ability to see their doctor, order their prescriptions, and learn how to use public transportation all on their own. Self-sufficiency is key for our clients and you will be a huge part of their path to that goal. Volunteer with YMCA International Services to make an impact on the lives of refugees and newly arrived immigrants.

Office Support

In preparation for our Girl +1 event, we need help stuffing bags, getting materials ready and assisting in small tasks to prepare for the workshop on December 2nd. 

Girl + 1 is a half-day workshop in which girls and their adult female caregivers learn about different aspects of their health. We will be providing health screenings, great speakers, interactive presentations, breakfast, goodie bags, door prizes and much more to ensure that everyone who participates walks away feeling empowered to take charge of their health and well-being.

The Mercer Society maintains several greenhouses that are used primarily to grow plants for the annual March Mart plant sale. Working with the grower and TMS volunteers, you may be making cuttings, potting or repotting plants, maintaining potted plants in the greenhouse and more, depending on the need. This is an "in the dirt" experience where you may be working inside or outside. We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patience, loving volunteers to spend time with our patients. They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 21, people from across the world will fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through a fundraising activity of their choice. Whether you're participating at home, online or in-person, we have plenty of fun ideas to engage family and friends in The Longest Day.

The Longest Day Volunteer Committee is essential to the growth and success of the event by helping to recruit teams, engage participants, and promote the event. Volunteers with any variety of skill sets and strengths can help! TWST4GIRLS is interviewing potential mentors for youth girls ages 11-17. You will be working with youth from diverse backgrounds, underserved communities, working-class families, incarcerated or recently paroled youth. We are looking specifically for mentors who have a background in animal science.

iEducate is building a system for school districts to engage college and high school youth within the classroom in order to close achievement gaps at a foundational level. During the school year, we match college students with neighboring elementary schools, placing them alongside teachers to support differentiated instruction.

We have a team of current and former educators & HR professionals who conduct our screening and face-to-face interviews, and would love for you to join us! If you are available on Saturdays for a few hours between 10AM-4PM, you will be assigned candidates to interview and evaluate. We will provide the training and rubric to ask the appropriate questions and look for key competencies.

The Need

Transitioning into adulthood is challenging for any teen, but especially for youth aging out of foster care. Many lack the resources, skills, and plans needed for independence, putting them at higher risk of dropping out, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, or involvement with the justice system. A caring adult can make all the difference.

How You Can Help

Transition Coaches are trained volunteers who guide foster youth (ages 14+) nearing adulthood. Coaches help youth create transition plans, explore education and employment options, and provide support as they navigate independence.

How It Works

Volunteers meet with their matched youth at least twice a month, in the youth’s placement or another public setting, on a schedule they set together. Youth live across greater Houston, and training and ongoing support are provided.

Requirements

Coaches commit for at least one year, complete an application, interview, and background check, and attend orientation/training (offered monthly, alternating daytime and evening).
