Summary:

The Volunteer will tend to visitors and deal with inquiries on the phone and

face to face regarding the Adult Education program. Community Family Center’s

Adult Education Program offers ESL and GED courses as well as support with

workforce development. The Volunteer can support the staff up to 3 days per

week for 3 hours per day at any of the following shifts: 9 am- 12pm; 1 pm- 4pm;

5 pm - 8 pm. The Volunteer would also provide of support with student progress

tests. Professional development opportunities will be made available.

Support may include:

1. Answering incoming phone calls, taking and relaying messages

2. Ensuring that all participants entering are greeted and directed to their

destination.

3. Providing current information to callers or participants regarding AE program

4. Assisting with registration, orientation and test administration.

Volunteer Instructional Aide (2 days/week)

Summary:

The Volunteer Instructional Aide will be responsible for assisting the ESL or

GED instructor. This person must be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others,

be able to relate well to adult learners, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in

accordance with the Adult Education Program’s educational standards and

philosophy. Professional development opportunities will be made available.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

1. Supporting ESL or GED instructors with instruction in class that may include

one-on-one assistance, guiding/leading conversations, small group tutoring

2. Assisting with student orientation

3. Assisting students with referrals and resources

4. Treating all clients with dignity and respect.

5. Attend staff meetings and recommended training programs.

6. Maintaining confidentiality about students, their families, and other employees

outside the agency.

7. Helping with the operations of audio/visual aids (projectors, etc)

Qualifications

High School Diploma generally required or GED

Friends of Down Syndrome Academy is a nonprofit facility where teens and adults with Down syndrome come to continue learning after they have "aged out" of public school.

Looking for volunteers to work as a Teacher's Aide in our PE room.  You would assist our Coach, who is a Personal Trainer, and garner tons of information about working with special needs adult.

Volunteers are needed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  If you can volunteer on a regular basis but can't do all three days, just let us know what works for you.

Target Hunger, a non-profit community based organization committed to alleviating hunger and its root causes in the neighborhoods we serve. We are desperately in need of warehouse volunteers, as well as senior and home bound distribution assistants.

First shift, starts from 7 am to 10 am and second shift starts from 10 am to 2 pm, Mondays through Wednesdays, and occasionally Thursdays and Fridays.

Activities:  include loading and unloading vans; sorting and boxing incoming food donations; building food boxes and bags for our senior and home-bound programs; and the on-site preparation and off-site delivery of food items to remote senior food distribution sites. These positions require being able to lift 25-35 lbs, repetitively. Closed toe shoes recommended.

This garden started in 1989 is situated on two acres and located in Kashmere Gardens. It features a wash station, a composting facility, and 100 beds that last year provided over 9,000 pounds of organically grown produce to the community. The large garden gives volunteers and clients the opportunity to grow nutritious organic produce to benefit themselves, their neighbors, and Target Hunger food pantries. All of the produce will be distributed to families in need of food assistance.

Volunteers are needed to help our garden continue to grow! 

Both individuals and teams who volunteer in the gardens may assist in many ways such as: building garden beds, turning soil, weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, maintenance, and special projects. We schedule volunteers Tuesday through Friday from 9am to noon. *No weekend opportunities.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

At Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County we build quality, affordable homes in partnership with deserving families.  Since our incorporation in 1989, our affiliate and its contributors have built over 230 homes in northwest Harris County.  In 2014, in an effort to continue to promote quality, affordable housing, we committed to expand our mission to include home repair projects for deserving families that qualify under our strict guidelines.

We are seeking part-time Home Repair Leaders/Foremen (Red Hats) to join our home repair team!  Red Hats will be needed on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for approximately 2 to 4 weeks at a time. Experience and Knowledge of residential construction and/or the home repair process is preferred but not necessary.  Limited training will be provided onsite.  Habitat will provide daily task lists, tools, materials, and eager volunteer builders. Red Hats will provide the leadership needed to get the day’s activities done!  Applicants must be able to perform tasks without direct supervision in addition to being willing to lead and teach volunteer groups. YMCA International Services is providing a family strengthening course designed to enrich connections within families by:

1) Improving family relations

2) Reduce stress and family conflict

3) Learn how to budget and navigate the US Financial System

The classes will be conducted in Spanish, thus we will need a Spanish speaker that speaks English and can assist in conducting the classes. Duties for the volunteer will include assisting in teaching the curriculum and assisting with coaching the family participants, that can include individual tutoring or teaching a small group. The Relationship Enhancement Course Spanish Interpreter will also conduct data collection by giving instructions on taking surveys and collecting demographic information from the participants of the classes.

Volunteers assist in the Multi Care Center, The Lighthouse's adult day activity program. Volunteers assist with recreation classes, serve coffee and lunch, and provide companionship for clients who are blind and visually impaired. 

Commitment is once a week or every other week for 1-2 hours.

The single largest need for volunteers. 

A home visitor is a volunteer who is matched with an adult who is blind or visually impaired and assists the person with everyday tasks that allow the person to maintain their independence (ex. grocery shopping, mail reading, bill paying, running errands). The blind adult lives in the specified area.

Commitment: 1 or 2 times a month.

Volunteer must have their own vehicle.

FEMALE volunteer only.

As a volunteer, you would be the sighted rider on the front of a tandem bike with a blind or visually impaired rider on the back.

Group bike rides occur twice a month on Saturdays.

Volunteers are needed to assist in our store, Reflections, selling adaptive aids in a retail setting including catalog and telephone orders. 

Responsibilities may include: Performing standard clerical and administrative functions and general office functions including typing, filing, copying, mailings, phone calls, and other tasks as assigned.

At Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County we build quality, affordable homes in partnership with deserving families.  Since our incorporation in 1989, our affiliate and its contributors have built over 230 homes in northwest Harris County.  In 2014, in an effort to continue to promote quality, affordable housing, we committed to expand our mission to include home repair projects for deserving families that qualify under our strict guidelines.

We are seeking a motivated, outgoing candidate with a passion for helping others to join our team as our Marketing and Development Intern!  In this role you will be assisting the Development department with developing, maintaining, and expanding partnerships in the Northwest Harris County community by working with volunteers, business, and individual donors to help us raise donations we need to fulfill our mission of eliminating sub-standard housing.

Volunteers are the heart of the American Red Cross and we could not serve our clients and our community without them. The Volunteer Services Recognition and Appreciation Lead oversees the development and implementation of both formal and informal chapter recognition efforts for the Greater Houston Area.

TWRC has a wonderful opportunity for someone who enjoys coordinating, organizing and working with people.  TWRC is primarily a volunteer organization, with only a few year-round employees and a few seasonal employees.  

Primary Responsibilities include:

* Establishing recruiting sources for volunteers

* Coordinating membership interests with organizational needs and assigning volunteers to meet organizational needs appropriate to the volunteers’ interests and skills

* Coordinating and, in some cases, delivering volunteer training

* Ensuring a volunteer scheduling approach that offers predictability to volunteer support and provides back-up when volunteers do not show

* Providing ongoing support and guidance for volunteers

Qualifications:

* High school graduate (minimum)

* Experience in volunteer management

YMCA International Services is a unique center of the YMCA of Greater Houston that delivers client-centered programs to refugees, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations to advance their economic independence, social integration, and civic participation. The Y helps newcomers restore hope, build stability, create opportunity and change futures. YMCA International Services is continuously recognized as a leader in the Houston immigrant community.

Currently, YMCA International Services is providing a family strengthening course designed to enrich connections within families by:

1) Improving family relations

2) Reducing stress and family conflicts

3) Learning how to budget and navigate the US Financial System

The classes will be conducted in Farsi, thus we will need Farsi speakers that speak English and can assist in conducting the classes. Duties for the volunteer will include assisting in teaching the curriculum and assisting with coaching the family participants, that can include individual tutoring or teaching a small group. The Relationship Enhancement Course Farsi Interpreter will also conduct data collection by giving instructions on taking surveys and collecting demographic information from the participants of the classes.

TWRC is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the community as an emergency and rehabilitative facility for injured and orphaned wildlife brought in by the public for eventual release back into the wild.  Our educational offerings foster empathy and understanding about the value and the need to preserve our natural resources.  TWRC was established in 1979 as the first wildlife facility in Houston and receives annually over 5,000 wild animals from 392 different species.  

This non-paid internship is designed to foster and encourage individual growth in a candidate who is interested in wildlife, environmental science, or veterinary science careers. YMCA International Services is currently looking for volunteers to join the Welcome Committee. The Welcome Committee Volunteers are the first contact for a refugee or refugee family in Houston. The committee member volunteer greets the family at the airport, helps them locate their baggage and goes along with the YMCA driver to the new apartment of the refugee family. At the apartment, the committee member volunteer teaches the family how to use all of the appliances and safety equipment in the home.

This is an excellent opportunity for any person wanting to show a refugee how welcoming the city of Houston can be to newcomers.

Activities:

Food Fairs:Volunteers will then be assigned to one of the task needed at the site like client intake, packing produce in individual distribution bags and putting the food in the clients cars.

Other Information:

All volunteers that have not volunteered in the last year must to fill out a volunteer application (CLICK HERE) they also must sign a waiver on site at the location.

In order to protect the health and safety of staff, volunteers and those we serve, Target Hunger has changed our “Educational Food Fairs” to “Drive through distributions” with food being loaded in car trunks as well as enhanced safety protocols. In addition we are using the 6 foot Social Distancing rule and encouraging everyone to where gloves and wash their hands. We also will not have more than 10 volunteers volunteering at a time.

Volunteers will arrive on site, usually before 9am.  Food Fairs are about 3 to 4 hours long and break down can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

FotoFest is seeking volunteers, 18 or older, to gallery hosts for REFUGEE, an important exhibition addressing the global refugee crisis. REFUGEE originated at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles California. A timely exhibition, REFUGEE allows audiences to engage with the plight of refugees and reflect on their condition. A core principle of REFUGEE is to present these diverse populations with both dignity and respect, even as they have endured often unwelcoming conditions and hostile environments in order to find their new beginnings. The exhibition includes work by photographers Lynsey Addario, Omar Victor Diop, Graciela Iturbide, Martin Schoeller, and Tom Stoddart.

Gallery hosts greet guests and assist with Virtual Reality headsets. Gallery Hosts allow us to keep exhibitions open to the public. REFUGEE is open May 12 to July 15, 2017. Responsibilities

Assist donations manager in acquiring, storing, and organizing all new donations given to YMCA International Services. Assist with new refugee apartment setup. Go shopping for groceries with donations manager to help stock new apartments. Transport donations to apartments so when the families arrive at Houston they have something they can call their own.
