Communication/ Marketing VISTA duties

VISTA member will assist Community Relations Director with development of internal and external communications. The VISTA’s participation in developing content for social media, websites articles, newsletters, presentations will increase community engagement and support internal and external events. VISTA member will join the World Refugee Day planning committee, generate more community involvement and expend resources for refugees. VISTA member will conduct trainings and develop support materials on communications and brand related topics.

PR & Development VISTA duties

The VISTA Member will build internal and external relations and outreach capacity to bring attention to the unmet needs of Houston’s refugee and immigrant individuals, families, and communities. The VISTA will generate support for The Alliance’s programs which create opportunities for clients to achieve their goals for self-sufficiency and well-being. The VISTA Member will need to have strong technical and creative writing skills. Some activities include: Draft press releases, emails, and other communications to media and supporters that will generate interest in The Alliance’s activities and accomplishments related to client impact; Assist with creating framework for Speakers Bureau; Develop best practices, guidelines, or trainings for staff specifically focused on media preparation, public speaking, and how to strengthen prescribed writing skills amongst staff; and Assist in grant writing activities and the development of a grants management database.

Get ready to make a difference this Halloween season with “Spook-A-Clean,” a fun and
frightfully important community cleanup event organized by SPLASh! On November 1, volunteers of all
ages will come together to clean Houston’s bayous, learn from local environmental organizations, and
participate in our costume swap!

Houston’s bayous are critical ecosystems, supporting a wide range of species and serving as vital
stopover points for migratory birds. However, these waterways often become polluted with trash and
debris, posing a serious threat to the wildlife that depend on them.

Our “Spook-A-Clean” event is
designed to tackle this issue head-on while bringing a festive, family-friendly atmosphere to
environmental action.

Orientation is mandatory before beginning to volunteer

Volunteers will arrange a donation drive for items such as hygiene items, school supplies, small household items, or baby items. The goal of the drive is to create Welcome Kits for refugee families. We will provide you with a Welcome Kit List and Guide. We suggest gathering kits from one of the two options below.

1) Separate each category on the Welcome Kit List into separate containers of your choice. Ideas for containers include, but are not limited to: plastic bins, reusable grocery bags, or boxes.

2) Include all of the items on the Welcome Kit List into one container of your choice. Ideas for containers include, but are not limited to: plastic bins, reusable grocery bags, or boxes.

The average family size consists of five people, two adults and three children. We leave the option open for groups to decide which of the two are more convenient for your group in gathering the supplies.

Please note that due to the COVID-19, our office is currently closed. Staff members are currently working from home. Donations can be delivered directly to clients. Please contact the volunteer coordinator for more information at houston@rstx.org.

Volunteers will help with job readiness tasks including assisting clients with resume development, job application assistance, and mock interviews. We have basic resources for the workshop at the office.

The single largest need for volunteers. 

A home visitor is a volunteer who is matched with an adult who is blind or visually impaired and assists the person with everyday tasks that allow the person to maintain their independence (ex. grocery shopping, mail reading, bill paying, running errands). The blind adult lives in the specified area.

Commitment: 1 or 2 times a month.

Volunteer must have their own vehicle.

A year-long program (August 2021-June 2022) designed to equip college students who are passionate about the Gospel and empowering underprivileged youth through education.

We are looking for followers of Jesus who love soccer and are passionate about helping kids develop strong life skills and values. We provide free soccer practice at various local schools in Alief ISD Monday-Thursday 5:00-6:30pm. As a volunteer, you would be working with the head coach to follow the provided practice curriculum. The curriculum guides you through warm ups, soccer technique, drills, and activities. The unique thing about our program is that all of our soccer sessions are based around a Bible story and life value. We use soccer as a tool to instill valuable life lessons about character and personal development into the players. This is why we request that applicants be strongly committed to their Christian faith, because as a coach, you are also a role model. In this role, you’ll make phone calls to clients to share information about our free civics classes, which help prepare adults for the citizenship exam. Your calls help ensure more people can access the resources they need to succeed.

The A Serene Healthcare team serves Houston and surrounding areas with quality care & compassion. We provide excellent medical, psychosocial, spiritual, and volunteer support for those facing life-limiting illnesses and their families. We are a locally owned, quickly growing, and a, quality of life dedicated Hospice and Palliative Care company. We mainly recruit volunteers/interns to be companions for our hospice patients, but due to COVID-19 we have had to switch gears. We have a lot of things around the office that we could use help with including answering phones, inputting data, social media content creation, or making copies to assist our hospice office staff. The compassionate and dedicated team at A Serene Healthcare provides exceptional medical, psychosocial, spiritual, and volunteer support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses in Houston and surrounding areas. As a locally owned Hospice and Palliative Care company, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life of our patients. Our volunteer program at A Serene Healthcare has had to adapt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we are currently seeking compassionate volunteers available during business hours (9 am to 5 pm) to assist our hospice office staff with tasks such as answering phones, inputting data, creating social media content, and additional clerical work. Volunteers skilled in filing papers and performing clerical tasks are especially needed and valued. This is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the day-to-day operations of the hospice and palliative care industries.

Our interns require a minimum commitment of 4-6 hours per week. We understand the importance of flexibility and are willing to work with your schedule, particularly if you are employed with another organization.

CWS Houston is recruiting Volunteer Youth Mentors to support newcomer youth ages 15-24. Mentors will be responsible for facilitating once monthly group mentoring sessions with approximately 5 newcomer youth for a total of 6 months. Mentoring sessions are focused on social/emotional support, life skills, cultural orientation, financial literacy, and college or career readiness skills. Mentoring sessions also encourage peer support and social connection amongst group members.

Requirements: Volunteer Youth Mentors must be over the age of 25 years old and must be fluent in English. Prior experience working with newcomer youth is preferred but not required. CWS is prioritizing volunteers with lived experience as newcomers to the U.S.

Location: Mentoring sessions will take place either virtually or in-person depending on client needs and preference. Transportation assistance will be available to youth and mentors who participate in in-person mentoring.

Assist victims fleeing from their abusers by driving them to safety! We ONLY allow our volunteers to pick-up survivors in a safe public place, usually in Houston. Volunteer safety is our #1 priority.

We get calls for service every day from survivors trying to start a new life, but without volunteer drivers we can only honor a few.

Position- Employment Mentor
Mentors are individuals that ease the transition to self-sufficiency by establishing a relationship with a refugee. A mentor’s goal is to assist a refugee in reaching self-sufficiency as quickly as possible through one-on-one guidance, advocacy, and individualized support. Through weekly visits, employment mentors will support refugees in realizing both short-term and long-term professional goals.

Most translation opportunities are during business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. Occasionally, we have opportunities on the weekend. As a volunteer, you don't have to be a permanent resident or citizen. 

We are also willing to pay you as a contractor. As a contractor, you must have legal status in the U.S.

There is a pre-developed curriculum of about 15 topics. Training will be provided. You don't have to speak another language in order to facilitate the classes. If needed, RST will provide a translator.

Languages are a plus! Volunteers are expected to serve about three months. We are flexible to work with your schedule.

RAMP is a career-focused program for youth with disabilities involved with or at-risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system. Volunteers will serve as support and mentors to the youth. Mentors are needed during and, once a relationship is established with youth, possibly after school if that works for both the youth and mentor. RAMP is under our HighSchool High Tech Program, a community-based partnership of parents, educators, rehabilitation professionals and business representatives working together to encourage high school students with disabilities to explore the fields of science, engineering and technology through mentoring, job skills, transition and internships for at-risk teens with disabilities. Includes campus meetings, company tours and internships.

Meetings are held weekly at area high schools and 2 meetings per month are required for mentors to attend. Meetings occur Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and mentors may choose whatever day during the week works best for them to attend meetings. Mentors are NOT required to be at every meeting every day of the week. (You may decide to mentor with us on Tuesdays and would then try to make as many Tuesday meetings as possible.)

Meeting times are: Mondays: 2:30-3:30, Tuesdays 12:40-1:30 and Thursdays 10:35-11:25. Every youth is one caring adult away from becoming a success story. You can be that caring adult and make a difference. We hope to work with you soon as a mentor with the RAMP program.

This volunteer mentor position is to help Houston refugee youth graduate from high school, explore careers, and apply for post-secondary education opportunities. Mentors must be 24+, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to dedicate 6 hours per month to their mentee. 

In this community-based program, volunteers are paired with students in 11th or 12th grade of high school. Each mentor commits to supporting and guiding a young refugee for a period of at least one year to help the student develop and reach their personal, academic, and career potential. Program dates run from September 1st, 2021 to August 31st, 2022.

Students in the Global Scholars program receive case management services from PAIR staff and assigned mentors, and focus on activities that include researching careers, applying for college, writing personal statements, completing financial aid and scholarship applications, and transitioning to college life.

PAIR operates Global Learners programs in three middle schools with significant refugee populations. PAIR volunteer mentors engage students by providing supportive relationships, homework assistance, English language practice, and recreational and creative activities.

Sessions take place after school, 3:15-5:30 PM. Each session begins with outside games, homework help, and sharing time to transition from the school day. Mentors then break off with a small group of students to work on a lesson or activity centered around a particular theme. Global Learners assists participants in developing more positive attitudes towards school, achieving greater academic success, developing more positive relationships with peers and adults, and continuing their education through high school and beyond.

Volunteering with the Learners program requires a semester-long commitment of 10 program sessions.

We are back to in person sessions! Sessions will be held at the Post Oak School.

Minds Matter is a 26 year old not-for-profit organization that helps top performing high school students from low-income backgrounds reach their dreams of getting into college. Average student GPA is at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). 90% of students are 1st generation college students.

Our volunteers are young professionals who play a critical role in helping these Minds Matter students achieve their goals. This is a 3 year program for the student, they begin our program their sophomore year and continue until high school graduation.

Mentor Time Commitment: 1-2 hrs/week, 20-24 Saturdays- October through June. We pair 2 mentors with each student to work for 1.5 hours most Saturdays during the school year.

Mentor Role: Guide mentees through everyday life and school challenges, work with the mentee on essays, problem solving, summer program selection, college selection and applications. Our weekly sessions are structured and we also have special sessions (ie college fairs, debate team, guest speakers) as well as fun mentor/mentee outings and volunteer-only get-togethers throughout the year, giving ample opportunity to get to know your mentee as well as other volunteers.

Mentor Requirements: Young professionals, college graduates, attend at least 75% of Saturday sessions, and undergo a background check. We will have a Mentor orientation before the start of the program.

In this role, you will retrieve, transport, and deliver blood samples from area crossmatch facilities to our headquarters located behind NRG Stadium, using a company vehicle. All volunteer drivers will go through a volunteer orientation, background check, drug screen, road test and complete defensive driving training provided by The Blood Center to ensure the safety of the volunteers as well as the products. Volunteer drivers are asked to commit to 2-4 driving shifts per months with a four hour per shift minimum. Volunteer drivers will receive materials about the program and its policies, essential contact information, a T-shirt, and a personalized volunteer badge. Their shift will begin at the Hospital Services department, where they will sign in and receive their vehicle and route assignments.

YMCA International Services is currently looking for volunteers to join the Welcome Committee. The Welcome Committee Volunteers are the first contact for a refugee or refugee family in Houston. The committee member volunteer greets the family at the airport, helps them locate their baggage and goes along with the YMCA driver to the new apartment of the refugee family. At the apartment, the committee member volunteer teaches the family how to use all of the appliances and safety equipment in the home.

This is an excellent opportunity for any person wanting to show a refugee how welcoming the city of Houston can be to newcomers.

Currently, YMCA International Services is providing a family strengthening course designed to enrich connections within families by:

1) Improving family relations

2) Reducing stress and family conflicts

3) Learning how to budget and navigate the US Financial System

The classes will be conducted in Spanish, so we will need Spanish speakers that speak English and can assist in conducting the classes. Duties for the volunteer will include assisting in teaching the curriculum and assisting with coaching the family participants, which can include individual tutoring or teaching a small group. The Relationship Enhancement Course Spanish Interpreter will also conduct data collection by giving instructions on taking surveys and collecting demographic information from the participants of the classes.

Our clients are refugees and recent immigrants, so many have a hard time knowing what to do in order to navigate their way through our healthcare system. Our clients often struggle with the process of scheduling a doctor appointment, getting their prescriptions filled, getting lab work done, etc. A few of our clients suffer from poor health literacy skills. Health literacy is the ability to read, understand, and effectively use basic medical instructions and information. YMCA International Services is currently seeking community volunteers, nursing students, or pharmacy technicians to help educate our clients on certain aspects of our health care system.

A few duties of the Health System Volunteer Navigator will include showing clients how to refill a prescription over the phone and/or accompany the client to pick up their medication. You will show client’s how to state one’s name and DOB in order to pick up the medicine. If necessary, show bus route if the pharmacy is too far from home. Training will be provided. 

As a Health System Volunteer Navigator, you will be giving our clients the ability to see their doctor, order their prescriptions, and learn how to use public transportation all on their own. Self-sufficiency is key for our clients and you will be a huge part of their path to that goal. Volunteer with YMCA International Services to make an impact on the lives of refugees and newly arrived immigrants.

Key Responsibilites:

-communicate well with doctors, nurses, and pharmacists 

-keep summaries and/or reports of doctor appointments they assist with

Health System Volunteer Navigator will report to Preferred Communities Coordinator 

Time Commitment: Typically, volunteers will spend 2-4 hours with our clients. Volunteers can come in once a week or once every two weeks. 

Qualifications: Familiar with public transportation and healthcare system(e.g. scheduling a doctor appointment or ordering a prescription over the phone) 

Support: Preferred Communities Coordinator will provide training and assistance to the volunteer when needed.

Help our clients fill out necessary documents and assist in keeping track of donated items. Bike MS is the fundraising cycling series of the National MS Society and raises more money than any other cycling event for any other cause. Even though we are unable to meet in-person this year, our Bike MS team is still determined to make an impact. To date, Bike MS cyclists, volunteers, and donors have raised more than $1.3 billion to stop MS in its tracks, restore what's been lost, and end MS forever. By virtually volunteering, you can be a part of this growing movement!
