Volunteer: Urban Farm Experience: Corporate Events

Corporate Events: The Urban Farm Experience

The Urban Farm Experience is the perfect team building opportunity for groups that have been working remotely for the past year or for those who want to take a break from the computer and bring your group out to the field! During your visit, your team will experience sustainability in action by participating in a project on one of PIF’s farms that will ultimately help create a green, healthy and vibrant Houston. We typically work with groups of 10-70 members, but please inquire to see if we can accommodate your larger group. This event can be customized to best meet your group’s needs. Please reach out to learn more.

During your Urban Farm Experience, your group will:

Be ‘farmers-for-a-day’ and get their hands dirty while working together to complete a fun project in the field

Participate in a Q&A to learn more about sustainable agriculture and Houston’s food system from local experts

Volunteer: In-Kind Donation Needs - Laptop Computers for Youth

Children 4 Tomorrow has transition to virtual therapy for youth due to the pandemic.  We are in need of computers (laptops) for these youth in order  to participate in the therapy.

The needs for our nonprofit organization are tremendous.  Our underserved communities are struggling to cope with the anxiety, depression, trauma and hopelessness that cause mental and physical illnesses. Its effect has been amplified due to the long duration of the pandemic quarantine in which none of us expected or planned for, and has caused havoc on the entire world.  Statistics now show that the issue of PTSD and trauma are on the rise in communities similar to ours due to the pandemic.

The program provides a virtual evidence-based protocol that provides mental health services in disaster aftermath crisis (such as trauma) and has fulfilled the mental health population’s needs since 2007.

For some of these kids to participate in the program they need a laptop computer for the 2 week 6 session duration.  We will be able to loan out computer before the sessions and pick them up when the sessions are completed and move to another group of youth.

Volunteer: Relatable Role Model Letters!

Girls are looking for meaningful ways to connect now more than ever, and that’s where you come in! For girls in grades 3-12, we want to include an inspiring element of connection in our Spark Kits - Relatable Role Model Letters.

So what are Relatable Role Model Letters? These page-long letters written by Girls Empowerment Network volunteers aim to inspire, encourage, uplift, and celebrate girls throughout our community. During the last several months, many of us have felt disconnected, distant, or isolated from others. Relatable Role Model Letters provide volunteers and girls a unique way of communicating and feeling connected.

Be sure to check out our Volunteer FAQs (see links below)! This document is full of tips, guidelines, and an example Relatable Role Model Letter.

To register as a Relatable Role Model Letters volunteer, visit: Relatable Role Model Letters (jotform.com)

What should be included in my letters?

The letter should be one page in length. Volunteers are asked to write a minimum of 5 different letters. We are currently asking for handwritten letters as this provides a personalized and meaningful touch.  We recommend taking 1-2 weeks max to complete your letters. We welcome decorations, colors, markers, and stickers! We suggest using a variety of bright and bold colors. Letter recipients are girls in grades 3-8 and grades 6-12 (roughly 8-13 years old and 11-18 years old). You will be able to choose which age demographic you'd like to write letters to. Ensure your writing is legible and use language that is accessible to young folks. Use inclusive language in your letters (see our inclusive language section in our FAQs!) Girls are looking for meaningful ways to connect now more than ever, and that’s where you come in!

We welcome decorations, colors, markers, and stickers! We suggest using a variety of bright and bold colors. Letter recipients are girls in grades 3-8 and grades 6-12 (roughly 8-13 years old and 11-18 years old). You will be able to choose which age demographic you'd like to write letters to. Ensure your writing is legible and use language that is accessible to young folks. Use inclusive language in your letters (see our inclusive language section in our FAQs!) Steer away from language about physical attributes.   Feel free to share your first name, age, city, and/or profession. Do not include any other identifying/personal information. We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll practice English with your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection.

No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. “Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it.  My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!”

Volunteer: Volunteer: Senior Writer / Storyteller for Harvey Nexus Stories

Volunteer: Senior Writer /Storyteller for Harvey Nexus Stories Full Job Description

Public Relations and Communications

Note: Please DO NOT APPLY if you are only looking for paid employment. The following is an opportunity for flexible, part-time, volunteer work. This is a remote-from-home position with a potential for full time employment once funded. As a  501(c)3 nonprofit with a very limited budget, we are staffed principally by volunteers - skilled volunteers.

This is a volunteer opportunity and no compensation will be given for this role. Applicants are encouraged to apply who are passionate about service to the community and willing to give back in service with their time.

Senior Writer / storyteller for Harvey Nexus Inc. Stories

From the beginning, Harvey Nexus set out to be a different kind of organization. One that not only celebrates the best parts of life but also addresses the social determinants that prevent some of us, especially those in underrepresented communities from enjoying the richness and simplicity of life- we have set out to bring a feeling of community, connection, dignity  and  access to simply make a living.

We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.

The Management Team and Board of Directors at Harvey Nexus Inc. is looking for an experienced writer/storyteller with a passion for humanity, sustainability, service to the community, and those working to make the world a better place.

Do you believe that great storytelling can inspire us and bring us together? Do you have a natural curiosity that makes you want to discover the stories of families, members of the community, businesses, current affairs, nonprofits working to combat social change? Can you find a great story in the life of Harvey Nexus, find a story that captures the heart of the community? Do you enjoy consensus building and collaborating with other teams to find the best ways to bring stories to life or finding creative ways to make a business story lively? If so, you may be the right fit for the Harvey Nexus Stories team. As the team grows it's our goal to have  a group of writers, designers, editors, producers, photographers, videographers and more.

The person we’re looking for is deeply curious about people and the world around them and a heart for working toward positive change. The writer is flexible and willing to do what’s needed, whether it’s deep storytelling, a quick synopsis, crafting a social media post, writing an internal profile or, occasionally, an executive communication.

This writer has a portfolio of storytelling that showcases an evocative style that inspires, motivates and moves and can help bring to life the mission and values of Harvey Nexus; and, ideally, some experience in other mediums, such as video and audio storytelling and social media.

This is a unique opportunity to join a forward-thinking, hands-on, results-driven and highly collaborative team and play a pivotal role. Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Sign up on your computer: my.backrs.com

Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Our Impact Model

Research shows that cross-class relationships are the biggest predictors of social mobility. And financial margin increases the odds of college persistence four-fold.

We partner with schools and youth organizations to recruit committed high school and college students into our community. Then, by removing the barriers the keep well-resourced adults from connecting with under-resourced young people, our technology builds bridges across socioeconomic strata, enabling people like you to empower students like Diego R.

Diego R. joined Backrs so he could pursue his dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and the support he's received from his backrs, he's well on his way to making that dream a reality. As he explained:

"My brother was born with Chronic Kidney Disease. He’s the man who gives me the strength to pursue Biomedical Engineering and become an accomplished technician. I strive to make the lives of those who suffer like him better. I want to be the change he needs to be healthy."

All of the students in our community are driven to build a better world; when they're given the resources to do so, everyone around them benefits.

The Backrs Experience

Being a great backr isn’t about grand gestures or having all the answers. It’s about the small things: sharing a word of encouragement. Passing along a helpful resource. Making an introduction. These actions make a big difference--take it from some of our current backrs:

"As a backr, I love the opportunity to support and mentor my three proteges as they grow and develop. I feel grateful to be able to guide and shape their future in a positive way. Through Backrs, I have been able to watch them grow into confident and capable individuals, and it has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can't put into words. It's made a tremendous difference in my life to see them achieve their goals and know that I played a role in helping them get there."

- Ahmed Dawood, Marketer at Apple

"Backrs gives me an opportunity to utilize my expertise to provide mentoring and support to students. Even though my students are a couple time zones away, I have the flexibility to connect with them on my time and have been dedicated to checking my app weekly at minimum to engage in conversations and answer questions. Its exciting to celebrate their wins and talk about future plans. Mentoring was very impactful in my life so it gives me joy to give back in this way."

- Lori Hunt, College Provost
