Freewheels Houston seeks volunteers to distribute bikes to refugees, veterans, unhoused people, and young people who need transportation for work and school. Our bikes are donated by members of the community and repaired by volunteers.

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico.

When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent. 

We are looking for event planners willing to join us in planning and facilitating our 3 core yearly events. Helping with ideas and implementation!

We are looking for individuals willing to use their skills in photography and videography to help capture images of our work in our organization. A videographer to create imagery and storytelling to highlight the work and mission of our organization.

Bike shop volunteers at Freewheels Houston prep, repair, build and distribute bicycles that will enable refugees, veterans and young people from low-income families to get to work, school and other destinations.

The JC Friends of the Library are a group of community members who meet every other month and volunteer to help the library. Sometimes the volunteering is helping with library events, tending the community garden, shelving books, or fundraising in the community. We need volunteers aged 25+ who have a good driving record, clean background, and time to drive survivors of domestic violence to and from crisis centers in the region, or to a family home far away. We arrange survivor pick-ups in a safe public place, manage travel logistics to be easy for you, and we pay for all trip expenses.

We are looking for followers of Jesus who love soccer and are passionate about helping kids develop strong life skills and values. We provide free soccer practice at various local schools in Alief ISD Monday-Thursday 5:00-6:30pm. As a volunteer, you would be working with the head coach to follow the provided practice curriculum. The curriculum guides you through warm ups, soccer technique, drills, and activities. The unique thing about our program is that all of our soccer sessions are based around a Bible story and life value. We use soccer as a tool to instill valuable life lessons about character and personal development into the players. This is why we request that applicants be strongly committed to their Christian faith, because as a coach, you are also a role model. We look forward to talking with you to see if you would be a good fit for our program!

Help refugees take the first step toward U.S. citizenship by joining our team as a Civics Outreach Volunteer. 

In this role, you’ll make phone calls to clients to share information about our free civics classes, which help prepare adults for the citizenship exam. Your calls help ensure more people can access the resources they need to succeed. 

As a volunteer, you will: 

You don’t need to speak another language or have prior experience—just a welcoming attitude and a desire to support others on their citizenship journey. If you do speak a language like Spanish, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, or Urdu, that’s a wonderful bonus!

Volunteer shifts available Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Training and scripts are provided. 

The Holiday season is a time to be filled with joy and happiness, for some this may not be the case. All children and teens deserve to have something under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. This is where we need your help.  We need new unwrapped toys for the Holiday season. The age range from newborn to 18.  I know sometimes it is hard to buy for teens so gift cards are welcome too.  Gift cards for fast food, Walmart, Target , Amazon are great examples. Become part of our completely volunteer-based outreach in high human-trafficking areas! This outreach is crucial to reaching trafficking victims and sharing the Human Trafficking National Hotline in places away from their captors or employers.

Key Responsibilities include:

-- Speaking to businesses on behalf of UAHT and victims on Saturdays as your schedule permits.

-- Displaying the National Human Trafficking Hotline number in restrooms, back offices, kitchens, and storefronts -- places away from victims' captors and/or employers.

-- Entering data after each outreach activity is completed.

All volunteers who want to become part of the Volunteer Outreach Team must complete the orientation and training. (This is separate from the Volunteer Orientation that every volunteer must attend.)

Volunteer Outreach Orientation will cover the key duties, processes, script, impact, and time commitment needed to confidently speak to businesses on behalf of UAHT and trafficking victims.

If weather permits, orientation and training will take place outdoors in a park setting, and when weather doesn't permit, we'll meet in an accommodating coffee shop.

After the Orientation and Training presentation, we will drive to nearby businesses, and each participant will get to train with an experienced volunteer who will share their knowledge of the process.

Human trafficking occurs every day in our own communities. This crime continues to grow in the shadows of our society, and is one of the largest criminal industries in the world.

Victims of trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of sexual exploitation and/or forced labor.

Participants in Red Sand Projects fill cracks in sidewalks with red sand, a symbolic gesture that represents those individuals who fall through the cracks -- whether the cracks of our social, economic, and political systems or those of our personal consciousness.

We at UAHT want to highlight and remember the human trafficking victims who fall through those cracks in the greater Houston area, the very ones we make an effort each day to reach and help.

Our Red Sand Projects are meant to be volunteer-led and community-wide events, so if you'd like to host a project of your own -- whether it's in your neighborhood, your favorite park, your church, or an other public setting you'd like -- we strongly encourage you to do so!

The six-course, bi-weekly program -- called "The Art of Life" -- will cover a range of artistic expressions -- from collages to intuitive art to self-portraits -- and we are in need of supplies to ensure our participants have all the tools they need to let their creativity flow freely.

We are looking for board  members who are dedicated and concerned about youth development. Board members will be required to attend quarterly board members, engage in fundraising, participate in board matters, make/sustain policy and essentially be involved in all activities that govern the nonprofit organization, Almighty Ministries, Inc. Board members who have the following expertise are preferred: legal, real estate, marketing, fundraising, accounting, business, education, religion, social media. This is a one year position. Also need a Treasurer who is knowledgeable about QuickBooks. Meetings are held at the Houston Public Young Library every quarter.

BPSOS is in need of Spanish and Vietnamese fluent volunteers to help out during our Citizenship Workshop! Our In-Person Workshop runs once a month on Mondays from 10 am-4 pm. (Some English speakers are needed as well)

Training for the N400 application and Citizenworks is provided.

Agape Homes CDC creates quality affordable housing for diverse communities without concentrating poverty. The Agape Homes CDC goal is to give the families in the Agape Development community an affordable option to own a home. Sponsoring the landscaping and providing the necessary labor to install the landscape items helps keep the cost of the homes at an affordable level while also creating a welcoming space for our new homeowners.

This sponsorship opportunity covers the expenses of all landscape items: trees, sod, bushes, dirt, and mulch. All supplies will be ordered and onsite for your group to complete installation! This project of landscaping one home is best for 5-7 people but can accommodate up to 10. It is estimated to take approximately 3 hours, depending on the speed of your team.

The cost of this sponsorship is $5,000 per home with no limitation on how many homes you can sponsor as they become available and ready for sponsorship.

Children 4 Tomorrow is needing needing snacks and coffee for parenting classes and  snacks for Youth Group Therapy Classes.  

This can be in either in a form of a gift card to a grocery store or Sam's Wholesale or Costco OR the snacks and coffee themselves.  The organization has 2 Keurig Coffee Makers so the coffee needs to be the coffee pods.  

Children 4 Tomorrow has transition to virtual therapy for youth due to the pandemic.  We are in need of computers (laptops) for these youth in order  to participate in the therapy. 

The needs for our nonprofit organization are tremendous.  Our underserved communities are struggling to cope with the anxiety, depression, trauma and hopelessness that cause mental and physical illnesses. Its effect has been amplified due to the long duration of the pandemic quarantine in which none of us expected or planned for, and has caused havoc on the entire world.  Statistics now show that the issue of PTSD and trauma are on the rise in communities similar to ours due to the pandemic.

The program provides a virtual evidence-based protocol that provides mental health services in disaster aftermath crisis (such as trauma) and has fulfilled the mental health population’s needs since 2007.  

For some of these kids to participate in the program they need a laptop computer for the 2 week 6 session duration.  We will be able to loan out computer before the sessions and pick them up when the sessions are completed and move to another group of youth.

Volunteers are needed to 1) post photos on social media i.e. Instagram and Facebook 2) create event flyers 3) pass out flyers 4) to send announcements to local radio stations/TV stations 4) post on Eventbrite.

Volunteers are needed to pull weeds, lay mulch, paint, repair garden tools, assemble a compost bin and plant at the Youth Going Green Community Garden, 4706 Idaho St   77021

The garden provides youth in the community with skills to empower them to be productive and productive youth. 

So many volunteers have expressed fulfillment, relaxation and a sense of purpose as they work in the garden.

Garden hours are every Thursday and 1st/3rd Sunday at 3-5pm. Community service hours are provided if needed.

ages will come together to clean Houston’s bayous, learn from local environmental organizations, and
participate in our costume swap!

Houston’s bayous are critical ecosystems, supporting a wide range of species and serving as vital
stopover points for migratory birds. However, these waterways often become polluted with trash and
debris, posing a serious threat to the wildlife that depend on them.

Our “Spook-A-Clean” event is
designed to tackle this issue head-on while bringing a festive, family-friendly atmosphere to
environmental action.

During the last several months, many of us have felt disconnected, distant, or isolated from others. Relatable Role Model Letters provide volunteers and girls a unique way of communicating and feeling connected.

Haiti- Now is dedicated to empowering Haitian girls living in domestic servitude to overcome poverty and exploitation to achieve economic security.

"Your first assignment will be to start a fundraising campaign. Haiti Now will provide further guidance for you to have a quick and successful fundraiser."

Role brief: This Volunteer role requires, a women screenwriter preferably Haitian, who works with director and producer to write on the topic of domestic servitude in Haiti, for a theatre play
