Do you know how to repair a bike? Freewheels Houston volunteers repair bikes that become safe, reliable transportation for refugees, high school students and veterans emerging from homelessness. The bike you repair will help someone get to work, school and other destinations. We've got the tools and parts you will need. Our volunteers enjoy sharing their knowledge with others. We will ask if you have been vaccinated and ask you to wear a mask if you have not.

Freewheels Houston seeks volunteers to distribute bikes to refugees, veterans, unhoused people, and young people who need transportation for work and school. Our bikes are donated by members of the community and repaired by volunteers.

Opportunity to receive training on diverse ideas to support patients and families who need hospice care. Socialize with the patients with a conversation, games, and just general comfort.

Join us for an outdoor, on-farm work day!

Come ready to work and get dirty! Volunteers will help farmers and PIF Volunteer Farm Stewards with farm tasks like weeding and mulching. Volunteers are asked to bring their own water and dress appropriately for the weather. Close-toed shoes are required. We recommend wearing:

long pants and long socks - in all weather. Beware of fire ants!
sunscreen and a hat, as needed
rain gear (poncho, jacket), as needed

The Urban Farm Experience is the perfect team building opportunity for groups that have been working remotely for the past year or for those who want to take a break from the computer and bring your group out to the field! During your visit, your team will experience sustainability in action by participating in a project on one of PIF’s farms that will ultimately help create a green, healthy and vibrant Houston. Use this opportunity to initiate sustainability conversations with your team while learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems from PIF farmers and local experts.

We typically work with groups of 10-70 members, but please inquire to see if we can accommodate your larger group. This event can be customized to best meet your group’s needs. Please reach out to learn more.

They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

Our offices are in Clear Lake and the Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Pearland Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. Adults, if you are interested in learning about gardening, native plants, and invasive species join the Nature Discovery Center on the first  Monday of the month to help us care for the park. A volunteer is needed to answer the phone on Saturdays for an hour as well as do some light clericalwork.

Our organization needs a CPA volunteer that can do an audited financial statement. 

Children 4 Tomorrow is needing needing snacks and coffee for parenting classes and  snacks for Youth Group Therapy Classes.  

This can be in either in a form of a gift card to a grocery store or Sam's Wholesale or Costco OR the snacks and coffee themselves.  The organization has 2 Keurig Coffee Makers so the coffee needs to be the coffee pods.  

Children 4 Tomorrow has transition to virtual therapy for youth due to the pandemic.  We are in need of computers (laptops) for these youth in order  to participate in the therapy. 

The needs for our nonprofit organization are tremendous.  Our underserved communities are struggling to cope with the anxiety, depression, trauma and hopelessness that cause mental and physical illnesses. Its effect has been amplified due to the long duration of the pandemic quarantine in which none of us expected or planned for, and has caused havoc on the entire world.  Statistics now show that the issue of PTSD and trauma are on the rise in communities similar to ours due to the pandemic.

The program provides a virtual evidence-based protocol that provides mental health services in disaster aftermath crisis (such as trauma) and has fulfilled the mental health population’s needs since 2007.  

For some of these kids to participate in the program they need a laptop computer for the 2 week 6 session duration.  We will be able to loan out computer before the sessions and pick them up when the sessions are completed and move to another group of youth.

Volunteers are literally, the heart of Harbor Hospice, providing a special kind of caring and compassion for our patients and their families. Every day our volunteers make a difference in the lives of so many people. Whether they offer a listening ear to patients and families, provide grief support, serve as a companion to loved ones, or share their personal expertise to help promote hospice care, the time give to Harbor Hospice families by our volunteers can be the most rewarding experiences of their lives.

iEducate is building a system for school districts to engage college and high school youth within the classroom in order to close achievement gaps at a foundational level. During the school year, we match college students with neighboring elementary schools, placing them alongside teachers to support differentiated instruction.

We have a team of current and former educators & HR professionals who conduct our screening and face-to-face interviews, and would love for you to join us! If you are available on Saturdays for a few hours between 10AM-4PM, you will be assigned candidates to interview and evaluate. We will provide the training and rubric to ask the appropriate questions and look for key competencies.

We are a nonprofit based in Houston focused on stabilizing the episodic and transitional homeless. Since 2016, we have been connecting individuals and families with Houston's many resources, community organizations, and homeless service providers to ensure stability, security, and success for our clients. In the last year, we have observed rapid growth in clients, partners, and community support. Despite the abundance of resources available to the homeless, many still face a large number of obstacles and challenges that often make even basic survival impossible. At The Village Connect, we have developed creative and alternative strategies for solving common problems affecting the episodic homeless population in Houston. Our focus on advocacy, goal setting, and game planning has culminated in a new service model which provides pathways for stability for our clients. However, in order to fully realize our model we need dedicated interns and volunteers that can help us reach our goals. We are looking to fill multiple positions. We are currently in need of a volunteer to assist in our Finance Department.
Duties include:

Alliance is seeking friendly, motivated individuals to assist with front desk management. Tasks include, but are not limited to, answering phone calls, greeting clients, and light administrative duties. Second language is a plus, particularly Spanish.

Ideally able to serve 1-2 shifts per week for 2-4 hours each. Set weekly schedule for the month of December, with the opportunity to extend. Morning and afternoon shifts available.

We are currently in need of a highly-motivated and tech savvy volunteer for the Alliance Language Network. In a competitive interpretation industry, the Alliance Language Network stands out for offering interpretation and translation services in over 70 languages. The program contracts over 139 experienced interpreters, the majority of whom are former refugees, who serve over 45 vendors in various sectors. 

Tasks include, but are not limited to, web design, branding, content management, and social media.
Must be able to commit to at least 15-20 hours per week with opportunity to work remotely.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE

Babysitters and Tutors are needed to assist with refugee children. Fluency in a second language such as Arabic, Farsi, and Swahili are a plus.

Babysitters are needed for Tuesday afternoons, 1-2 and 2-3 p.m.

Tutors are needed for a weekly commitment. Mostly during weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Please note that this is a full time, one year service term, AmeriCorps VISTA Position. This position therefore falls under the Federal Agency, the Corporation for National Community Service, which works to eliminate poverty. It will require initiative, drive and a passion to affect change in low income communities by building the anti-poverty capacity of programs that serve those in need. In return for their service, VISTAs receive a modest living allowance, health benefits, and the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.

Communication/ Marketing VISTA duties

VISTA member will assist Community Relations Director with development of internal and external communications. The VISTA’s participation in developing content for social media, websites articles, newsletters, presentations will increase community engagement and support internal and external events. VISTA member will join the World Refugee Day planning committee, generate more community involvement and expend resources for refugees. VISTA member will conduct trainings and develop support materials on communications and brand related topics.

PR & Development VISTA duties

The VISTA Member will build internal and external relations and outreach capacity to bring attention to the unmet needs of Houston’s refugee and immigrant individuals, families, and communities. The VISTA will generate support for The Alliance’s programs which create opportunities for clients to achieve their goals for self-sufficiency and well-being. The VISTA Member will need to have strong technical and creative writing skills. Some activities include: Draft press releases, emails, and other communications to media and supporters that will generate interest in The Alliance’s activities and accomplishments related to client impact; Assist with creating framework for Speakers Bureau; Develop best practices, guidelines, or trainings for staff specifically focused on media preparation, public speaking, and how to strengthen prescribed writing skills amongst staff; and Assist in grant writing activities and the development of a grants management database.
