Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Become part of our completely volunteer-based outreach in high human-trafficking areas! This outreach is crucial to reaching trafficking victims and sharing the Human Trafficking National Hotline in places away from their captors or employers.

Key Responsibilities include:

-- Speaking to businesses on behalf of UAHT and victims on Saturdays as your schedule permits.

-- Displaying the National Human Trafficking Hotline number in restrooms, back offices, kitchens, and storefronts -- places away from victims' captors and/or employers.

-- Entering data after each outreach activity is completed.

All volunteers who want to become part of the Volunteer Outreach Team must complete the orientation and training. (This is separate from the Volunteer Orientation that every volunteer must attend.)

Volunteer Outreach Orientation will cover the key duties, processes, script, impact, and time commitment needed to confidently speak to businesses on behalf of UAHT and trafficking victims.

If weather permits, orientation and training will take place outdoors in a park setting, and when weather doesn't permit, we'll meet in an accommodating coffee shop.

After the Orientation and Training presentation, we will drive to nearby businesses, and each participant will get to train with an experienced volunteer who will share their knowledge of the process.

Human trafficking occurs every day in our own communities. This crime continues to grow in the shadows of our society, and is one of the largest criminal industries in the world.

Victims of trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of sexual exploitation and/or forced labor.

Participants in Red Sand Projects fill cracks in sidewalks with red sand, a symbolic gesture that represents those individuals who fall through the cracks -- whether the cracks of our social, economic, and political systems or those of our personal consciousness.

We at UAHT want to highlight and remember the human trafficking victims who fall through those cracks in the greater Houston area, the very ones we make an effort each day to reach and help.

Our Red Sand Projects are meant to be volunteer-led and community-wide events, so if you'd like to host a project of your own -- whether it's in your neighborhood, your favorite park, your church, or an other public setting you'd like -- we strongly encourage you to do so!

Engaging in art offers a creative process to explore emotions, gain personal insight, and even achieve healing in ways not always possible otherwise, and because of this, we at UAHT are over-the-moon thrilled to offer a series of art classes to the trafficking overcomers!

The six-course, bi-weekly program -- called "The Art of Life" -- will cover a range of artistic expressions -- from collages to intuitive art to self-portraits -- and we are in need of supplies to ensure our participants have all the tools they need to let their creativity flow freely.

** We have an immediate need for Spanish Language volunteers to help us reach out to our clients via phone and help them fill out specific online forms.

On an ongoing basis, speakers of numerous languages (including but not limited to: Spanish, Dari, Arabic, French) are needed for in person and/or remote translation and interpretation to ensure refugees’ full understanding and participation in our programs and in the community. Document translation may be accomplished remotely and emailed to staff.

Mentors are integral partners in resettling refugees by providing extra care so that they may quickly become self-sufficient. Through weekly visits, mentors will assist refugees in realizing short-term goals while also providing an introduction to American culture and customs. Mentors are individuals that ease the transition to self-sufficiency by establishing a relationship with a refugee. A mentor’s goal is to assist a refugee in reaching self-sufficiency as quickly as possible through one-on-one guidance, advocacy, and individualized support.

Duties/Expectations-

Time Commitment- We ask that our volunteers commit to a duration of at least 4 months. Mentors and mentees should establish a more detailed schedule at their first meeting. Mentors must also attend a volunteer orientation and submit to a background check.

This AmeriCorps VISTA position focuses on building PAIR's capacity in serving over 300 refugee students annually through educational mentoring programs! The upcoming 53rd Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival (April 17 - 26, 2020) has just TWO remaining opening for full-time staff volunteer Interns to assist in the planning, preparation and presentation of the upcoming 52nd Annual Film Festival.

Our offices are located in SW Houston near The SW Freeway and Bissonnet. This is an International Film Festival, but realistically the jobs are "Office Jobs" - and do require some office and computer experience. We are a Mon-Fri - 10am to 6pm office hours...

We discovered Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, Ridley Scott, The Coen Brothers and John Lee Hancock, among others... be part of an event that discovers genius and helps lives and careers, WorldFest! See movies every day at lunch!

The Intern opening is from now to May 15 2020, when the festival is wrapped up. We accept both Full-Time staff volunteer Interns (a 5-day week, 10am to 6pm), and Adopt A Day Interns, where you may select one or more days a week to volunteer. Festival Treat Staff Luncheon treat every Friday, and you can view film entries throughout the week. Great team working conditions, private offices, free and safe parking. Cornerstone Family Resource Center is seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to serve as GED or ESL tutors for adult learners at Premier on Woodfair Apartments. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of individuals seeking to improve their English language skills or earn their high school equivalency.

Commitment:

2-hour sessions

Once per week (day/time flexible based on volunteer availability)

Minimum commitment: 3 months preferred

Facilitate small-group or one-on-one tutoring sessions in ESL or GED preparation

Support learners with basic skills in reading, writing, and/or math

Do you know how to repair a bike? Freewheels Houston volunteers repair bikes that become safe, reliable transportation for refugees, high school students and veterans emerging from homelessness. The bike you repair will help someone get to work, school and other destinations. We've got the tools and parts you will need. Our volunteers enjoy sharing their knowledge with others. We will ask if you have been vaccinated and ask you to wear a mask if you have not. 

Bike shop volunteers at Freewheels Houston prep, repair, build and distribute bicycles that will enable refugees, veterans and young people from low-income families to get to work, school and other destinations.

We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico. When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Join us for an outdoor, on-farm work day!

Come ready to work and get dirty! Volunteers will help farmers and PIF Volunteer Farm Stewards with farm tasks like weeding and mulching. Volunteers are asked to bring their own water and dress appropriately for the weather. Close-toed shoes are required. We recommend wearing:

long pants and long socks - in all weather. Beware of fire ants!
sunscreen and a hat, as needed
rain gear (poncho, jacket), as needed

The Urban Farm Experience is the perfect team building opportunity for groups that have been working remotely for the past year or for those who want to take a break from the computer and bring your group out to the field! During your visit, your team will experience sustainability in action by participating in a project on one of PIF’s farms that will ultimately help create a green, healthy and vibrant Houston. Use this opportunity to initiate sustainability conversations with your team while learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems from PIF farmers and local experts.

We typically work with groups of 10-70 members, but please inquire to see if we can accommodate your larger group. This event can be customized to best meet your group’s needs. Please reach out to learn more.

Your time and sharing of your special talents can make a meaningful difference for those who need you most. With the Holiday season here, we are looking for ways to give back to our Hospice patients. We need individuals to come in on December 19th, in the morning (around 8am) to create and decorate cards. It'll only be for an hour, and breakfast will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to give back this holiday season and supplies will be provided.

Astella Hospice is seeking individuals to serve as compassionate friend, offering emotional support, companionship and a listening ear to patients during their final journey. It is not about providing medical care but about being a source of kindness, connection, and understanding, bringing moments of joy and peace to the patient and their loved ones. Parents Night Out provides respite care on Fridays to families of teens and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and similar disabilities. Volunteers provide the teens with one-on-one attention and assist with activities in two locations - Bellaire and Katy.

We at Encompass are looking for compassionate, patient, loving volunteers to spend time with our patients. They need and want someone to share their final days with and we want people with a nurturing nature to give them that most basic of needs, human contact. You would spend time with the patients talking, listening, playing games or anything the patient would want or possibly need.

Our offices are in Clear Lake and the Woodlands area but we have patients all over the Greater Houston Area and Woodlands. The training would be done in our Houston office but the opportunity would be in the Pearland Area.

Due to the nature of the patients’ conditions each volunteer will be required to go through required training to volunteer with our patients. The process to become a volunteer takes a little bit but the rewards of giving your time to these patients is beyond measurable. You can give these people a final dignity in their darkest hour.  Thank you.

Emergency Services provides food and clothing as well as financial assistance to those in crisis. Volunteers are needed to help greet clients, answer phone inquiries, interview clients, help in the food pantry, or provide administrative assistance. Primary Responsibilities:

We rely on ‘Welcome’ Volunteers to provide outstanding customer service to all visitors and to respond to inquiries by providing information and/or directing visitors to resources or staff members. Training is provided. We need ‘Welcome’ volunteers each afternoon and on the weekends.

The Front Desk Volunteer will:

Adults, if you are interested in learning about gardening, native plants, and invasive species join the Nature Discovery Center on the first  Monday of the month to help us care for the park. No experience is necessary but come dressed for the weather, bugs, and be prepared to get dirty. A volunteer is needed to answer the phone on Saturdays for an hour as well as do some light clericalwork.

Our organization needs a CPA volunteer that can do an audited financial statement. 

Children 4 Tomorrow is needing needing snacks and coffee for parenting classes and  snacks for Youth Group Therapy Classes.  

This can be in either in a form of a gift card to a grocery store or Sam's Wholesale or Costco OR the snacks and coffee themselves.  The organization has 2 Keurig Coffee Makers so the coffee needs to be the coffee pods.  

Children 4 Tomorrow has transition to virtual therapy for youth due to the pandemic.  We are in need of computers (laptops) for these youth in order  to participate in the therapy. 

The needs for our nonprofit organization are tremendous.  Our underserved communities are struggling to cope with the anxiety, depression, trauma and hopelessness that cause mental and physical illnesses. Its effect has been amplified due to the long duration of the pandemic quarantine in which none of us expected or planned for, and has caused havoc on the entire world.  Statistics now show that the issue of PTSD and trauma are on the rise in communities similar to ours due to the pandemic.

The program provides a virtual evidence-based protocol that provides mental health services in disaster aftermath crisis (such as trauma) and has fulfilled the mental health population’s needs since 2007.  

For some of these kids to participate in the program they need a laptop computer for the 2 week 6 session duration.  We will be able to loan out computer before the sessions and pick them up when the sessions are completed and move to another group of youth.

Volunteers are literally, the heart of Harbor Hospice, providing a special kind of caring and compassion for our patients and their families. Every day our volunteers make a difference in the lives of so many people. Whether they offer a listening ear to patients and families, provide grief support, serve as a companion to loved ones, or share their personal expertise to help promote hospice care, the time give to Harbor Hospice families by our volunteers can be the most rewarding experiences of their lives.

iEducate is building a system for school districts to engage college and high school youth within the classroom in order to close achievement gaps at a foundational level. During the school year, we match college students with neighboring elementary schools, placing them alongside teachers to support differentiated instruction.

We have a team of current and former educators & HR professionals who conduct our screening and face-to-face interviews, and would love for you to join us! If you are available on Saturdays for a few hours between 10AM-4PM, you will be assigned candidates to interview and evaluate. We will provide the training and rubric to ask the appropriate questions and look for key competencies.

We are a nonprofit based in Houston focused on stabilizing the episodic and transitional homeless. Since 2016, we have been connecting individuals and families with Houston's many resources, community organizations, and homeless service providers to ensure stability, security, and success for our clients. In the last year, we have observed rapid growth in clients, partners, and community support. Despite the abundance of resources available to the homeless, many still face a large number of obstacles and challenges that often make even basic survival impossible. At The Village Connect, we have developed creative and alternative strategies for solving common problems affecting the episodic homeless population in Houston. Our focus on advocacy, goal setting, and game planning has culminated in a new service model which provides pathways for stability for our clients. However, in order to fully realize our model we need dedicated interns and volunteers that can help us reach our goals. We are looking to fill multiple positions.
