The Houston Police Volunteer Initiatives Program (VIP) is for individuals who wish to volunteer their time as members of the Houston Police Department. The greatest asset of any community is its people. A barometer of that value is the willingness of the people to volunteer.

HPD recognizes the importance of volunteers and the valuable contributions they can provide the department. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life in the city of Houston by working as a team. As a Police VIP volunteer, you become a member of our team.

Volunteer Requirements:

Disqualifications: 

You are disqualified from becoming a Police VIP if any of the following apply.  The following are also grounds for dismissal from the program once you are approved.

Criminal Offenses:

Three (3) or more traffic violations during the last eighteen (18) months.

Felony or Class A Misdemeanor conviction (includes Felony or Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication convictions).

Class B Misdemeanor in the past ten (10) years (includes Deferred Adjudication convictions).Family Violence offense conviction.

Indictment for any criminal offense (approval or reinstatement is based on disposition of court case).

Not living in the United States legally.

Under 17 years of age (except YPAC students).

Had / have a pattern of abusing prescription drugs.

Dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.

Current City Employee (unless participating in Citizen Patrol).

Physical / mental disability that would substantially impair an individual’s ability to perform their duties.

Unlawful sexual conduct prior to and/or during volunteer term.

Inappropriate behavior relating to sexual harassment or racial slurs.

Committed an act or behavior tending to bring reproach and/or discredit to themselves and/or the Houston Police Department.

Used, tried, or sold any dangerous drugs or narcotics including cocaine, crack heroin, LSD.

1. Community Engagement:

- Regularly report to the Program Coordinator on outreach activities and participant engagement metrics. Qualifications:

- Passion for youth empowerment, particularly for young women and marginalized groups. - Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.

- Experience in community outreach, event planning, or related fields is a plus, but not required.

Agape Homes exists to preserve affordability and create a pathway to homeownership for neighbors in OST/South Union who otherwise could not afford to remain in this gentrifying community.

Occasionally we have housing applicants who need information translated into Spanish. Volunteers will schedule a time for a call with the applicant and an Agape staff member to help facilitate the discussion about the program and what is expected. 

We also have official housing documents that need to be translated into Spanish.

Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) is partnering with some area grocery stores to help provide food for our food pantry. We just need some helpful individuals to pick up the donations from these retailers and help deliver them to CAM's facility.

Programs like this are wonderful resources for CAM, as they help us source items that would be otherwise difficult to source (such as bakery items and produce), and they help reduce food waste in our community.

Volunteers must have access to a vehicle suitable for transporting food items (an SUV or minivan would work perfectly, a sedan with sufficient trunk space would work as well). We will provide insulated bags.

We need weekly drivers for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. You may choose to volunteer for one, two, or all three of these pick-ups.

In this interactive volunteer session, you'll help individuals prepare for job interviews by conducting mock interviews using a question template and evaluation form provided by our Job Readiness Training Instructor. Volunteers will offer constructive feedback on interview responses, body language, and professionalism to help participants build confidence and improve their interviewing skills. No prior hiring experience is necessary, just a desire to support others on their path to employment!

A Point of Distribution (POD) Volunteer helps give out important supplies like food and water during emergencies. They work at special locations and have important jobs like keeping the line organized, handing out supplies the right way, checking how much is left, and keeping records. They also answer questions from people and help set up and take down the site during emergencies.

The JC Friends of the Library are a group of community members who meet every other month and volunteer to help the library. Sometimes the volunteering is helping with library events, tending the community garden, shelving books, or fundraising in the community. The Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is seeking a Garden Director as a non-voting member of
FWP with responsibility for the garden areas surrounding the community center, Firefly Field

Looking for a patient and supportive volunteer to help our after-school students with challenges with foundational skills such as phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. Students are K-5. Each class session will be one-to-one.

CWS Houston is recruiting Volunteer Youth Mentors to support newcomer youth ages 15-24. Mentors will be responsible for facilitating once monthly group mentoring sessions with approximately 5 newcomer youth for a total of 6 months. Mentoring sessions are focused on social/emotional support, life skills, cultural orientation, financial literacy, and college or career readiness skills. Mentoring sessions also encourage peer support and social connection amongst group members.

Requirements: Volunteer Youth Mentors must be over the age of 25 years old and must be fluent in English. Prior experience working with newcomer youth is preferred but not required. CWS is prioritizing volunteers with lived experience as newcomers to the U.S.

Location: Mentoring sessions will take place either virtually or in-person depending on client needs and preference. Transportation assistance will be available to youth and mentors who participate in in-person mentoring.

MENtorUP is a Saturday mentoring program designed to connect middle and high school young men with positive male role models who can guide, encourage, and inspire them.

Through group discussions, life skills sessions, and shared experiences, mentors help young men develop character, confidence, and a vision for their future. Our sessions include practical topics such as responsibility, leadership, career readiness, and healthy relationships—paired with fun activities like sports, field trips, college trips, retreats, and community service projects.

Join us at the Belmont Apartment Community for a fun and meaningful afternoon with a group of 15 elementary-aged kids who participate in our weekly afterschool program during the school year. We’re looking for caring volunteers to help with: Outdoor play and recreationHomework assistanceServing snacksLeading or assisting with a short Bible lessonThis is a wonderful way to build relationships, share encouragement, and invest in the lives of children right where they live.
