Special Skills: Passionate about and willing to interact with the public about the Garden and knowledgeable about horticulture. Comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people of all ages. Being multilingual is a plus.

Food service certified cooks to provide food for up to 60, seven days a week. (2 hours/day)

Bi-weekly mowing, edging, tree-trimming, debris pick-up, power washing. (2 hours twice per month)

Help around the ALS Association Texas Chapter Houston office with post event organization.

We are in continuing need of non-perishable pantry staples such as canned beans and vegetables, pasta, dry beans and rice, boxed meals, meals or meat in a can (chili, tuna, hearty soups), canned tomatoes and pasta sauce, pasta, and peanut butter. These items can be dropped in our "Feed Frank" donation box located in our parking lot at any time. If you have a large donation, it is best to contact the Pantry at himpantry@gmail.com to schedule a specific delivery time.

Open Gate has remained open during this pandemic, but we’ve had to change how we are serving our homeless youth.  We are unable to serve sit down meals as we used to, but we continue to serve nutritious meals on Sundays from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM on a carry out/to-go basis. 

During the height of the lockdown when many of our youth were locked into shelters, we continued to serve about 25 meals each Sunday to the truly homeless.  We are now averaging about 45 to-go meals served each of the last three or four Sundays.  We are observing social distancing by limiting the number of youth allowed inside at a time, scanning them for fever with a non-contact thermometer prior to entry, and providing fresh socks and underwear in addition to the meal.  No one is allowed to remain inside.  While the clothing closet is not officially open, we do provide shirts and trousers where desperately needed.  We also offer masks, hand sanitizer in small bottles, hygiene packs, and plenty of cold water bottles to help beat the heat. 

We are offering these services to the youth with a minimum number of volunteers (4 to 5 max) to maximize social distancing protection for the volunteers and the participants.  While we realize that many volunteers are being socially responsible and staying home, if you’d like to volunteer, we’d love to see you on a Sunday.  We also occasionally have opportunities to volunteer on a Saturday or during the week when only volunteers would be present. 

We are looking for volunteers from 2:00PM to 5:30PM a couple/few Sundays a month. Come visit Open Gate Homeless Ministry for 18 to 30 years of age.

Our mission is to provide a safe, affirming environment for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, and/or other identities. We firmly believe in meeting our participants where they are, without judgment or expectation, and letting them guide us toward their individual needs.

We work with homeless  between young adults the ages of 18-30. We provide clothing, a home cooked meal, resources to the community and their needs at the time.

SCHEDULE

This position is for Fall 2021, requiring a minimum of 180 hours. Shifts are available Monday-Thursday during the 3:00pm – 8:00pm timeframe. The internship will last from approximately August 23rd – December 6th. Scheduling accommodations may be made for the right candidate

INTERNSHIP PURPOSE

• Assist in the continued development and implementation of our Family Support Services program utilizing the Family-Centered Care model. This program will be intentional about providing support and resources to families and creates a caring, supportive, and joyful environment for all.

• To directly serve both families and patients by designing, facilitating and supporting Family Activities programming (age level support/activity groups) and at least one (1) Special Event that provide a caring, supportive and fun environment for all the families in the House.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Further develop Family Activities Program (age level support/activity groups). Manage and support by helping design curriculum and facilitating age-appropriate activities for residents of Holcombe House.

• Assess current curriculum, revise, or create new material, and implement programming within the Family Activities schedule. This could be completed through creating and utilizing educational handouts and brochures, presentations, programs, social media, and/or special events.

• Create and plan at least one Special Event for families during the semester. (i.e. Wellness Day; International Fair, outdoor field day, carnival, etc).

• Assist RMHH staff with chaperoning off-site field trips, as COVID restrictions permit.

• Assist with meal service to families, as needed.

• Assist with and provide support to volunteers and staff assigned to supply inventory and organization.

• Capture photos and stories for use on RMH Houston social media page, within RMHH photo release and privacy guidelines.

• Assist with translation and interpretation of documents, helping non-English speaking family members enroll and participate in RMHH programs, as able.

• Attend Operations department and interdepartmental staff meetings, as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to communicate compassionately with patients/families on a one-on-one basis.

• Interacts comfortably and gracefully with patients who may be very ill and their families including parents, siblings, grandparents and other caregivers.

• Ability to relate to families and children of various ages and cultural backgrounds

SCHEDULE

The Family Activities Intern provides administrative support to the Family Activities Manager. Responsibilities include scheduling family activities, coordinating with volunteer groups, correspondence, and general clerical support. The Welcome Desk Volunteer creates a warm, hospitable environment for our families by ensuring they are cared for during their stay.  By providing families with the physical items they need for a comfortable stay and providing a listening ear, we help families feel welcomed, known, and supported. Welcome Desk Volunteers help lower the stress of parents and family members in a time when support is needed the most and create a hopeful and secure environment in our home away from home.

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are seven days a week, 9 am - 12 pm, 12 pm - 3 pm, 3 pm - 6 pm, and 6 pm - 9 pm.

The financial burden combined with the thought of leaving their child’s bedside to grab a bite to eat can be terrifying. JoyFull Eats, RMH Houston’s meals program, helps alleviate hunger by providing quick, healthy food options for families. The JoyFull Eats intern contributes to the success and growth of the JoyFULL Eats program at all four RMHH locations by providing hands-on assistance, engaging with donors, helping with outreach, and providing administrative support.

The intern will facilitate Fun Clubs (age level support/activity groups), supervised play, and one cultural event. Family Support Services activities include educational support, behavior management, support groups, access to community resources, recreational activities, and parenting education. These services help stabilize the family unit, empowering them to actively participate in their child’s health care journey.

Help make our House a Home!  Ronald McDonald House - Holcombe House is a 70 bedroom, free-standing House available for stay to families with seriously ill children being treated in the Texas Medical Center. 

Two Volunteer Positions Available:

1. House Warmer – Create a warm, homelike culture throughout the House by serving and engaging with our residents. Volunteers serving in this position will primarily be up and moving throughout the House during the shift completing tasks such as:
- Provide a listening ear and visit informally with family members in common areas
- Assist family members and group volunteers with loading/unloading belongings
- Sharing our mission by providing tours to visitors and group volunteers
- Restocking snacks, making coffee, and helping our community kitchen stay organized and clean for our families
- Orienting families and group volunteers on kitchen use instructions
- Assist with sorting, organizing, and documenting donated items
- Restocking family bedrooms in preparation of new family check-in
- Assist group volunteers in orienting them to our House
- Helping orient new families to our House by helping them find kitchen materials, assisting with the checkout of bikes, play equipment, video game controls, etc.
- Giving tours to new families

2. House Concierge – Give family members and visitors an awesome first impression of the House by providing a warm welcome! Volunteers in this position will be primarily stationed at the front desk, assisting the manager-on-duty, welcoming and sharing information with our families and visitors. Volunteers will provide information and resources to guests and visitors by completing tasks such as:
- answering the phone and giving needed information about RMH, transferring calls as necessary
- welcoming and signing-in group volunteers
- assisting House Manager with clerical work
- assisting with occasional administrative projects from other departments
- selling merchandise
- paging to make House announcements
- welcoming visitors for meetings with staff, communicating with staff members about their arrival
- assisting with shuttle sign-up
- giving directions and sharing information on nearby resources
- sorting mail and facilitating package pick-up 

Holcombe House Volunteers make a 3 month commitment in our "Fast Track" or a 6 month commitment to serve in our "Traditional" track. Volunteer opportunities are available from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. seven days a week. Shifts are scheduled in 3 hour time blocks.

These vision clinics are held at our 190 Heights Blvd location. Each day we are hoping to serve between 100-150 children.  We need volunteers to help guide and escort the children through the clinic and ensure each child is safe and receives services.

Project Saving Smiles reduces the prevalence of tooth decay in underserved children and remove barriers to learning.

This is accomplished by providing dental screenings, dental sealants, fluoride varnish, and oral health education free of charge targeting Houston’s at-risk 2nd graders who are enrolled in schools with 50% or more students on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

The 2001 Dental Needs Assessment in Harris County revealed 68% of 2nd graders had untreated decay. It is known that children who suffer from oral health problems cannot learn well and miss days from school. According to the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illness. Additionally, children who experience pain from tooth problems are likely to be distracted and unable to concentrate on their schoolwork.

Since its inception, Project Saving Smiles has provided dental screening to 98,800 students and applied 217,878 sealants.  The Project also provides oral health education free of charge to pre-k, second grade, middle school and high school students enrolled in a free or reduced lunch program across Houston.

Ombudsman: A Funny-Sounding Word for A Valued Volunteer

This position works directly with nurses and patients on the floor. You will be assigned to a patient care unit and become a volunteer team member.  This is a great opportunity for people interested in the medical field.  There is a 100 hours minimum commitment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Visit all patients
• Use AIDIT with family members, guest, patients, and physicians.
• Ensure that all components of fall prevention protocol are in place; look for identifiers, bed exit alarms and that call light and personal items are within reach.
• Adjusts physical/environmental conditions for patient comfort.
• Remind patients to call for assistance
• Keep detailed notes on all patient concerns discussed during the visit
• Assists in meeting patient’s nutritional needs by checking food trays and assisting with feeding the patient (limitations apply), and providing fresh drinking water
• Report any urgent concerns immediately to the nurse.
• Must report any concerns or important information to the appropriate staff member(s)
• Call for assistance if rounding and patient needs toileting. Remain with patient until assistance arrives.

The Information Desks may well be the first contact a patient, his family or visitor have with Baylor St. Luke's  Medical Center Hospital, the Texas Heart Institute.  As such, the role of the volunteer is very vital in representing these institutions.  Please, above all, be patient and kind while serving at one of these desks. Remember it is possible that the person you are dealing with may never have been in a hospital before.  Keep in mind also that many people coming to the Information Desk could be very worried about themselves or a member of their family so you must be very polite, understanding and helpful. 

 To be able to escort or direct a patient or visitor to a certain area one has to know where it is.  For this reason all information volunteers must receive orientation and take a tour of the hospitals to become familiar with the many different areas.  You will be informed of any changes made in an area location as soon as possible.  

Greet and welcome all of our employees, patients and guests into the hospital. Assist our employees entering the facility by providing them proper masks and face shields, assisting with temperature checks and health attestations. Support our screening stations by restocking PPE supplies throughout the day. Support our patients and guests by offering them masks to wear and showing them to their destination in the hospital. 

Volunteers assist in the Multi Care Center, The Lighthouse's adult day activity program. Volunteers assist with recreation classes, serve coffee and lunch, and provide companionship for clients who are blind and visually impaired. 

Commitment is once a week for 1-2 hours.

Come participate with our tandem bike rides! Twice a month, the Lighthouse of Houston provides a tandem bike ride for adults who are blind or visually impaired. These are held on Saturday mornings and last about 2 hours.

Requirements: Volunteers must be able to ride a bike well. Volunteers must be 18 years old or 16 and with a parent. 

Want to work with people with disabilities? The Lighthouse of Houston holds monthly activities of daily living classes to assist individuals in adjusting to blindness. Volunteers would assist staff with preparing for and leading class.

Reflections is The Lighthouse of Houston’s store devoted to offering visionary solutions to make life easier for individuals who are blind and visually impaired.

Commitment:  Weekdays - Varies depending on availability.  Adult.

Dates:  June 19 – July 28, 2017

Time: 9:00a – 2:30pm

The Summer Transition Program provides on the job training for blind and visually impaired students ages 14 to 22 years of age. Students receive daily living skills as well as employment skills development training.

Volunteers assist in supervising the students with serving as sighted guides, preparing lunches, job tasks such as counting and replenishing supplies, morning setup and afternoon cleanup of work areas in Production Center.

The Volunteer gets to make their own schedule. If a volunteer can donate a few hours a week that is wonderful!

Our Occupational Health Nurses need your help! They Occupational Health department works internally to help keep our employees safe and healthy. They are looking for administrative support during new employee orientation for health screenings. 

Mondays, bi-weekly 

Every other Monday from 7AM - 11AM (times are flexible)

 Help with playing bingo, do karaoke, dance, music, art & craft, games, yoga, ceramics, movie, special events, trivia, exercise, and pet therapy. 

We would like to find a volunteer who would be interested in coming once a week to lead a service for our residents. We currently have someone on Sundays at 11 a.m. but they wont be able to do it going forward. Spiritual wellbeing is important for our residents. We can work with maybe every other Sunday as well. ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION

Ronald McDonald House Houston (RMH Houston) offers a home away from home providing care, compassion, and hope to families with seriously ill children being treated in Texas Medical Center member institutions.

ROLE PURPOSE

RMH Houston inside Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) offers volunteer positions in both the House (for overnight stays and naps) and family lounges (providing snacks and other resources). The TCH House and Lounge Volunteers maintain the RMH Houston in TCH and   provide compassionate support for those who have children in the Neonatal Intensive Care, Cardiovascular Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive Care Units of TCH.

SCHEDULE

Shifts are three hours, two times per month for six months to one year. Shift times are seven days a week, 9 am - 12 pm, 12 pm - 3 pm, 3 pm - 6 pm, and 6 pm - 9 pm.

A Point of Distribution (POD) Volunteer helps give out important supplies like food and water during emergencies. They work at special locations and have important jobs like keeping the line organized, handing out supplies the right way, checking how much is left, and keeping records. They also answer questions from people and help set up and take down the site during emergencies.

Do you have a heart for supporting children and families during their hospital journey?

As a Grace Companion, you’ll provide invaluable support to pediatric patients on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) floor at Texas Children’s Hospital. Each Tuesday and Thursday, we welcome 2-4 volunteers to serve by:

*Delivering meals to nourish both patients and their families
*Sharing comfort baskets to lift spirits and offer much-needed resources
*Engaging children in enrichment activities that bring joy and distraction during challenging times

Commitment Requirements:
Volunteers must commit to serving at least 1-2 times per month.
Shifts are available every Tuesday and Thursday.

Our hospital has a need for volunteers to assist with administrative tasks across multiple departments. Tasks include but are not limited to: Data entry, phone calls, assisting with patient education packets, filing, inventory checks, greeting and escorting of family members.

Help the Baylor St. Luke's visitors and patients find their way through the hospital. This position helps greet all of our guests and supports the front desk staff in offering information as needed. You will become familiar with many departments within the hospital and will help our patients and their loved ones.

Our Patient Ambassadors provide patient transportation services, information desk support, screening for covid-19 and patient care care support.

The Cath Lab Family Waiting Area has a need for a volunteer receptionist to assist our families. This position will be help serve as a liaison to the family and the clinical staff of the Catheterization Laboratory.

The Outreach Team @ U.S.VETS - Houston needs your help. Each and every day, our team canvasses the Greater Houston community to educate homeless veterans on our services and programs and encourage veterans to get off the streets and begin the process of regaining a healthy quality of life through our program. With that said, we need the support of our partners and the community!

Our Outreach team is in need of sack lunches / prepared lunches to distribute to homeless veterans. Currently, our budget is limited, however, the need to provide the basic necessities for our veterans is critical.

Microsoft Word – Digital Literacy Class

Do you love technology and enjoy helping others gain confidence with digital tools? Are you fluent in English and Spanish and comfortable offering live translation or tech support?

We’re seeking bilingual volunteers to assist with our 10-week Microsoft Word course for adult learners. Volunteers may help participants navigate computers, understand key Word functions, and encourage learners as they build valuable digital literacy skills. No teaching experience required—just patience, kindness, and a love for sharing knowledge!

Time Commitment 

Volunteers are requested to commit to teaching for the length of the semester. It can be multiple classes on Tuesday and Thursday or one class, one day a week.

Our ESL program follows the academic year schedule, August through May, with breaks for holidays and in between semesters. 

We believe this time commitment is necessary to foster relationships based on trust, respect, and the love of Christ, and will allow the volunteer to see the direct benefit of their role as a mentor/tutor.

Help young people aging out of foster care successfully step into adulthood. As a Transition Coach, you’ll mentor and guide youth (ages 14+) as they create transition plans, explore education and career options, and build the skills they need for independence.

A caring adult can make all the difference for a youth who may not have consistent support. By meeting once a week, you can help them set goals, stay motivated, and navigate life’s next steps.

We need 15 to 20 volunteers to assist us with catering to these children and to this community.
