Needs From: Volunteer Houston

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico.

When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Freewheels Houston's shop has the tools and parts you will need. Bike shop mechanics should be familiar with most bike systems.

We use a repair checklist developed with input from a master bike technician.

If you don’t know all the systems, our volunteers enjoy sharing their knowledge and can help get you up to speed. If you are already an expert, you will start getting questions from other volunteers looking to improve their skills.

We’re gearing up for our Cursed Kingdom: A Renaissance Halloween event and need awesome volunteers to help make it a hit! This event will take place on Oct. 27th for 5:30pm - 8:30pm. We ask all volunteers to report at least by 4:30pm.

Let’s make this Halloween unforgettable!

This year, THEA is honored to be celebrating our 10th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we are hosting a fundraising event with about 60 of our key supporters - individuals who have been historically vital in advancing our mission through donations. The event will take place at 108 Main St. in Downtown Houston on October 15th, 2025, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will include small bites, drinks and a silent auction. 

We would really appreciate the help of a few volunteers in making this event a success. We are looking for a few people to help with setup, tear down, keeping the venue tidy throughout the evening, restocking cups, napkins, plates, etc., and assisting in the overall flow of things. Setup starts are 5pm and we have to be packed up and out of the venue by 9:30pm. 

The event is downtown. So, if you do volunteer, I can share a parking map with you.

Join us on Saturday, October 11th, for a volunteer day in the community family garden. We’ll be tending beds, planting our fall crop, and enjoying early fall together. Your help would mean a lot

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. Of course, you will never actually be missing, but we always need new people to pretend to be missing. We will be enjoying nature, so dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes and comfortable pants. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a good book or electronic device to keep you busy during the down time. Looking for a patient and supportive volunteer to help our after-school students with challenges with foundational skills such as phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. Students are K-5. Each class session will be one-to-one.

Woodland Park is the second-oldest park in Houston and is a designated City of Houston nature preserve.  Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) will host a cleanup event to clear trails, rid the park of trash and debris and refresh the butterfly and firefly gardens.

FWP volunteers annually remove over 10,000 pounds of trash from the Nature Preserve, which includes Little White Park Bayou. 

FWP will provide gloves, trash bags, bug spray, snacks and water. 

Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes that can get dirty. 

Restrooms are available on-site in the Community Center starting at 10 a.m. 

Parking is available on site and on nearby neighborhood streets.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Hope Impacts partners with Cross Road Church to offer the opportunity for the homeless community of Katy to come and have supper, fellowship together, take a shower, and receive necessities and clothes.  We need volunteers to help us facilitate this program. StandOUT Youth has mentored over 100 teens since launching in 2021.

Like any grassroots program, we need financial support to keep this work going.

CWS Houston is recruiting Volunteer Youth Mentors to support newcomer youth ages 15-24. Mentors will be responsible for facilitating once monthly group mentoring sessions with approximately 5 newcomer youth for a total of 6 months. Mentoring sessions are focused on social/emotional support, life skills, cultural orientation, financial literacy, and college or career readiness skills. Mentoring sessions also encourage peer support and social connection amongst group members.

Requirements: Volunteer Youth Mentors must be over the age of 25 years old and must be fluent in English. Prior experience working with newcomer youth is preferred but not required. CWS is prioritizing volunteers with lived experience as newcomers to the U.S.

Location: Mentoring sessions will take place either virtually or in-person depending on client needs and preference. Transportation assistance will be available to youth and mentors who participate in in-person mentoring.

Time Commitment: Mentors will be required to participate in approximately 8 hours of training prior to engaging in mentoring services. Mentoring sessions will generally take place in the afternoons, evenings, or on the weekends depending on client and mentor availability.

Onboarding: Mentors must submit to CWS’ volunteer background check process before they are cleared to begin services.

Training & Support: Mentors will receive training on mentoring session curriculum prior to facilitating mentoring sessions. Mentors will receive ongoing support, training, and guidance from CWS Staff.

Do you have a skill, hobby, or professional expertise you’d like to share with others? We are seeking volunteers to lead life skills classes for adults in our community. These classes provide participants with practical tools to support their health, wellness, and personal growth.

Cornerstone Family Resource Center is seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to serve as GED or ESL tutors for adult learners at Premier on Woodfair Apartments. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of individuals seeking to improve their English language skills or earn their high school equivalency.

Commitment:

2-hour sessions

Once per week (day/time flexible based on volunteer availability)

Minimum commitment: 3 months preferred


Responsibilities:

Facilitate small-group or one-on-one tutoring sessions in ESL or GED preparation

Support learners with basic skills in reading, writing, and/or math

Encourage and motivate participants as they work toward their goals

Follow a flexible curriculum provided by Cornerstone or recommend resources if you have experience


Qualifications:

Patience, empathy, and a desire to help others succeed

Experience teaching, tutoring, or working with adult learners is a plus, but not required

Bilingual (English/Spanish) is helpful but not necessary


Impact:
You will play a vital role in helping adults overcome barriers to employment, further their education, and build confidence in a supportive, community-based setting.

Get ready to make a difference this Halloween season with “Spook-A-Clean,” a fun and
frightfully important community cleanup event organized by SPLASh! On November 1, volunteers of all
ages will come together to clean Houston’s bayous, learn from local environmental organizations, and
participate in our costume swap!

Houston’s bayous are critical ecosystems, supporting a wide range of species and serving as vital
stopover points for migratory birds. However, these waterways often become polluted with trash and
debris, posing a serious threat to the wildlife that depend on them.

Our “Spook-A-Clean” event is
designed to tackle this issue head-on while bringing a festive, family-friendly atmosphere to
environmental action.

WHAM is in need of Pantry Shoppers Tuesday - Thursday from 7:30am - 12:00pm and 12:30pm - 3:30pm to assist our clients shop the pantry shelves, refrigerators and freezer.  Volunteers would advise the clients the number allowed of each item, help load and unload and restock as needed.

FotoFest is pleased to announce its fall exhibition, Hillerbrand+Magsamen: nothing is precious, everything is game, on view from October 8 through November 22, 2025, in Houston at its Silver Street Studios gallery. This exhibition is a mid-career survey of Houston-based artists Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen, celebrating 25 years of collaboration. It is curated by Steven Evans and Madi Murphy.

Collectively known as Hillerbrand+Magsamen, the duo transforms the everyday into the extraordinary—turning household items, family rituals, and suburban chaos into playful, profound reflections on art, life, and togetherness. Their practice embraces a playful and inclusive approach to art-making, rejecting notions of exclusivity in the art world.

Houstonians will know Stephan from his many years teaching photography at UofH and HCP. Mary was the curator at Aurora Picture Show and is currently working at the Menil Collection.

Gallery Hosts are the backbone of FotoFest, they allow us to keep the exhibitions open to the public. You don’t have to be a photography expert to be a gallery host; a friendly face, neat appearance, and an interest in photography is all that is required. A FotoFest staff member will greet you in the gallery, review procedures, and give you a tour of the building and the exhibition. We are less than 2 minutes away in a nearby building and always available to assist you. The gallery can be quiet during the week, please feel free to bring your tablet/laptop, a book or a small project. Please bring a jacket or sweater with you if you tend to get cold. Water and light snacks provided, and Wi-Fi is available.

The gallery is open: Wednesday-Saturday, noon to 5PM. The shifts are 11:45AM to 2:30PM and 2:15PM to 5PM

Help the Down Syndrome Association of Houston as we unite to raise awareness and celebrate alongside our members, friends and families. Time Commitment 

Volunteers are requested to commit to teaching for the length of the semester. It can be multiple classes on Tuesday and Thursday or one class, one day a week.

Our ESL program follows the academic year schedule, August through May, with breaks for holidays and in between semesters. 

We believe this time commitment is necessary to foster relationships based on trust, respect, and the love of Christ, and will allow the volunteer to see the direct benefit of their role as a mentor/tutor.

Garden Maintenance: If you have a passion for gardening and working with children, we would love your help with our garden maintenance! We currently have two gardens that need regular management. This volunteer opportunity will involve gardening with children.

Landscaping: Help beautify our outdoor spaces to create a welcoming environment for everyone. Please be advised that closed-toed shoes and clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty is a must. This opportunity does not involve working with children.

Help a child who is reading below grade level. Volunteers needed to work with elementary-age children in northern Spring Branch once or twice a week. Work with small groups (2-4 students) for an hour once a week.  Simple lesson and materials provided for you.

The Client Support Specialist – Diaspora & Multi-Stakeholder Projects plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in the success of our global humanitarian efforts. This individual will serve as the connective tissue between Project C.U.R.E. and multiple stakeholder groups, especially diaspora communities that fund container shipments of medical equipment and supplies. 

This position requires a detail-oriented, tech-savvy, culturally competent individual - to work directly with the Client Care Manager - who is passionate about global health equity and thrives in fast-paced, collaborative environments.    Although this position is primarily remote, we would ask that you come to our Spring Branch warehouse for initial training and then occasionally thereafter.

 Key Responsibilities 

•                               Client Communication & Coordination Serve as a primary point of contact for diaspora partners and other stakeholder funders. 

•                               Respond to inquiries via email, text, WhatsApp, and other digital channels with professionalism and empathy. 

•                               Schedule and facilitate regular Zoom update meetings with stakeholders.

 About Project C.U.R.E. 

Project C.U.R.E. is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical equipment and supplies to underserved communities worldwide. Since 1987, we have delivered life-saving tools to hospitals and clinics in more than 135 countries. We partner with diaspora communities, funders, and healthcare institutions around the world to deliver hope and healing where it's needed most.

Position Overview
The Assistant Client Care Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting Project C.U.R.E.'s mission by ensuring strong relationships with partners and sponsors throughout each step of the shipping container project process. From the moment a partner engages with Project C.U.R.E. to the delivery of donated medical supplies, the Assistant Client Care Manager ensures smooth communication, timely updates, and an exceptional experience. This role supports the Executive Director (Client Care Manager) and interacts regularly with the logistics team to keep projects on track and fulfill all partner and sponsor expectations.   Although this position is primarily remote, we would ask that you come to our Spring Branch warehouse for initial training and then occasionally thereafter.

Included is a step-by-step guide outlining the project process to aid in training and orientation.

Key Responsibilities

1.         Initial Contact and Request Submission: Partners submit a request for donated medical supplies.

2.         Verification and Feasibility: Project C.U.R.E. reviews the feasibility of shipping supplies and arranges a consultation with the partner to discuss the process, expectations, and requirements.

3.         Cargo Consultation: Conduct a consultation with the partner to verify critical details such as necessary equipment, facility readiness, and required funds, and to clarify any questions.

4.         Partnership Plan Agreement: After the consultation, the partner reviews and signs a Partnership Plan. While not legally binding, this document ensures mutual understanding and alignment on project expectations and responsibilities.

5.         Assessment Invoice: Once the Partnership Plan is signed, the Client Care Manager requests an assessment invoice from the Assessment Manager (Tresena). The invoice is sent to the partner, and upon payment confirmation, introductions are made to continue the assessment process.

6.         Assessment and Facility Evaluation: Tresena schedules an on-site assessment, with the in-country partner responsible for logistics support. The assessor evaluates the facility and completes a report based on findings.

7.         Shipping Invoice and Payment: Following the assessment, Project C.U.R.E. issues a shipping invoice. Once paid, it is logged in the database, and the logistics team prepares the shipping manifest.

8.         Manifest Review and Modifications: The partner reviews the shipping manifest, requesting any necessary modifications to ensure alignment with their needs.

9.         Shipping and Delivery Coordination: The logistics team arranges shipment, selecting an appropriate warehouse and setting a loading date. The container is then shipped to the specified port or facility.

10.   Final Confirmation and Story Collection: After the container arrives, partners are encouraged to provide photos and stories to share the impact of the supplies. A follow-up assessment may occur the following year to gather additional data and evaluate ongoing impact.

Core Competencies

Assist in prepping and distributing groceries to families in need. This may include stocking the food pantry, sorting donated items for quality and bagging groceries for individual families, as well as helping families get groceries into their cars. Volunteers may also assist clients to fill out required information for the Houston Food Bank.

The food pantry hosts clients on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Volunteers are needed to pull weeds, lay mulch, paint, repair garden tools, assemble a compost bin and plant at the Youth Going Green Community Garden, 4706 Idaho St   77021

The garden provides youth in the community with skills to empower them to be productive and productive youth. 

So many volunteers have expressed fulfillment, relaxation and a sense of purpose as they work in the garden.

Garden hours are every Thursday and 1st/3rd Sunday at 3-5pm. Community service hours are provided if needed.

Volunteer Job Description: Participate as a "Night of Event Volunteer" for the Houston Boots & Bling for Stronger Bones, benefitting the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation on Saturday, October 25, 2025. This event features a band, live and silent auctions, and a fund the mission moment. Guests are treated to a buffet dinner. 

Responsibilities: 1. Attend one in-person meeting before the event to learn about Osteogenesis Imperfecta, the event details, and your responsibilities for the night of the event. 2. You will be explaining to guest attendees how to use their cell phones to place online bids during Boots and Bling for Better Bones.

Requirements: Seeking local high school Juniors and Seniors who have their own transportation. You must have an iPhone or an Android.  Must be technically savvy with both iPhones and Android devices. Must bring your driver's license. 

Purpose: Seeking 10 High School Juniors and Seniors from the Greater Houston Area. Volunteers will guide guests on how to use their iPhone or Android devices to place bids online. 

What is the Event? Boots & Bling for Better Bones benefitting the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation. When: Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Armadillo Palace in Houston. Communities are hungry for books! Help Little Free Library fulfill its mission of book access for everyone by coordinating a local book drive. You can lead a book drive and distributed the collected books to local Little Free Libraries. Little Free Library staff can answer your questions along the way. 

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity. You can coordinate your book drive during the times that work best for you and your community.

The ECDC-Houston Multicultural Center will be offering English classes to the newest members of our community. We are looking for volunteers to help facilitate beginner English classes.

Summary:

As a volunteer with the R&P program, you will support the case management team in helping newly arrived refugees during their initial resettlement period. Responsibilities include assisting with documentation, organizing case files, helping with core service delivery (such as arranging transportation and setting up housing), and performing light administrative tasks. The Quality Assurance Support Volunteer will assist in organizing, maintaining, and auditing client case files across multiple programs, including Reception and Placement (R&P), Matching Grant (MG), Preferred Communities (PC) and Social Integration Microenterprises (SIMED). The volunteer will be responsible for ensuring that all documentation is up-to-date, secure, and easily accessible, while also providing language interpretation when needed, supporting data entry, reporting, and system development for efficient file management.

This role involves collaboration with various program teams to ensure adherence to grant requirements, particularly regarding file management and security. The volunteer will also participate in team meetings to contribute to progress reports and help develop strategies for improving quality assurance.

This role offers valuable experience in refugee resettlement, program administration, and compliance management. The volunteer will gain hands-on experience in case management, employment counseling, and the operational side of federally funded refugee programs.

Program Support and Compliance
• File Management: Organize and maintain both physical and electronic client case files. Ensure that documentation for all programs (R&P, MG, PC, etc.) is up to date, easily accessible, and secure.
• Data Entry & Reporting: Perform accurate data entry for case documentation, service provision, and client outcomes when needed. Utilize SharePoint and Refugee Management System to manage data files, generate reports, and track program progress.
• Document Management System Development: Assist in creating and implementing systems to streamline document storage and retrieval processes. Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with organizational standards.
• Clerical Support: Provide additional support by preparing reports, memos, and other correspondence. Collaborate with team members to gather necessary data for document audits and other administrative tasks.

Cross-Program Collaboration
• Collaboration with Other Programs: Work with other teams, such as the Reception and Placement (R&P) Matching Grant (MG), Preferred Communities (PC) and Social Integration (SI) to ensure that programs are following grant requirements with respect to file management and security.

You will support case managers in client communication, documentation, and referrals to essential services such as healthcare, employment, and mental health services. Volunteers play an important role in helping vulnerable individuals navigate complex systems and achieve self-sufficiency. This role is ideal for volunteers interested in social work, healthcare navigation, or working with underserved populations.
