Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Support Refugees as an ESL Classroom Assistant

Join our team as an ESL (English as a Second Language) Classroom Assistant and help adult learners build the language skills they need to thrive.

As a classroom assistant, you’ll work alongside trained instructors to create a welcoming, supportive learning environment. Whether students are just beginning to learn the alphabet or practicing everyday conversations, your presence helps build confidence and connection.

As a volunteer, you may:

Lead one-on-one or small group conversation practice

Help students who missed class catch up on lessons

Offer translation support for pre-beginner and literacy-level learners (if you speak a shared language)

Your support will help refugees improve their English, strengthen their communication skills, and work toward life-changing goals—like getting a job, talking to a doctor, or helping their children with school.

We offer classes Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.

No teaching experience required—just patience, encouragement, and a passion for helping others.

Volunteer: Social Media Guru for our 2021 Virtual March for Marrow TX 5K Run & Walk

As patients and family members we are so busy taking care of our patients - or ourselves in this period of COVID-19. In order to promote our work on our 2021 Virtual March for Marrow, which will include a Virtual 5K Run and Walk as well as an online raffle, we need a clever and committed Social Media Guru.

We have a lot to learn and would love to learn from younger, smarter and more clever young people from the Houston area.

In addition, we are trying to go paperless – although we do have a great flier featuring our 2021 Star, Nicholas Smith, who just went through a bone marrow transplant. We are open to advice as to how best to use it. But it seems social media is the best way to go.

Our 2021 VIRTUAL March for Marrow 5K Run & Walk will run for 7 days from Saturday, March 27 to Saturday, April 3, 2021.

Our schedule for Saturday, 3/27/2021, Sunday, 3/28/2021, and Saturday, 4/3/2021, will run for about 2 hours, 9:00 am to 10:30 or 11:00 am.

Monday, 3/29/2021 to Friday, 4/2/2021, will only be 1 hour – perhaps 1 ½ hours.

There will be the Kick-Off including sounding the start of the 5k and Patient and Family Walk – complete with selfies. We will have a couple of doctors speak and a couple of patients telling their stories.  We hope to attract a couple of high school groups – bands and or a cheerleading squad – all with proper social distancing.

On Saturday, April 3, we will hold our Moment of Remembrance and Closing Ceremonies, catch up with our 5K Runners and have them log in their times and announce our Top Fundraisers and our Raffle WINNERS!

Volunteer: Volunteer Dispatcher: Coordinate the response teams (Remote Opportunity)

Every day, the Red Cross responds to an average of 3-4 fires a day in the Greater Houston area. These fires are responded to by teams of volunteers who go and meet the family, within 2 hours, any time night or day.

How do these amazing volunteers get called out? By YOU - our newest Disaster Action Team Duty Officer.

Purpose: Ensures timely activation and monitoring of local and regional Disaster Action Team (DAT) responses. The Duty Officer supports the DAT program either at the chapter/territory or region level.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership -

May determine if Red Cross action is required; may decide if Red Cross will respond via DAT. Uses event triggers such as size, scope, and type of the event to direct the DAT response. Works with on-scene DAT leadership to support the response and provide technical guidance. Support and trains new Duty Officers.

Functional -

Dispatch DAT members and monitor the response to ensure appropriate resources are made available.  Activate Disaster Health Services, Disaster Mental Health, and Disaster Spiritual Care, Public Affairs when requested. Documents incoming disaster notification and creates & verifies events in RC View, when applicable. Where appropriate, maintains access to and ability to use the Client Assistance System (CAS) to enter case data and load Client Assistance Cards (CACs). May be required to monitor activity across multiple DAT responses. Notify Chapter and Regional staff of significant events, and contribute to an Initial Incident Report, when appropriate. Attends monthly DAT meetings.

Time Commitment: At least one 12 hour on-call shift per week. Coverage of the night shift (6p-6a) and weekend shifts are CRITICALLY needed. Initially several hours on online training will be required in order to understand the role and the services provided.
