One of our goals at Jones Park is to support native wildlife by returning the forest to its native state. Historically, this area was a mix of prairies and woodlands with a more open understory. This ecosystem is dependent on disturbance, which at one time would have been provided by bison grazing and fires caused by either lightning, indigenous people, or settlers. The exclusion of these disturbances has created unregulated growth of invasive plant species that choke out native trees and grasses.

By manually removing the overgrown and non-native plants, we can recreate the effect of natural disturbances like grazing and fire. This allows for regeneration of the historical understory and mid-story vegetation, which can then be supported by planting of additional native trees. Increasing native plant diversity leads to an increase in the diversity of insect species, which then results in an increase in the diversity of birds and small mammals, too.

Join the Jesse Jones Park Eradicators to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitats of Jones Park. Invasives Beware! meets in the Nature Center at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month.

Each year, more than 1,000 people contribute to the cultural vibrancy of this great city by donating their time to the MFAH. Men and women of different backgrounds, from high school students to retirees, help the Museum to meet its goal of bringing art into the lives of people throughout Houston’s communities. At the MFAH, volunteer opportunities encompass a broad range of abilities and interests. Options include leading tours of the Museum galleries, helping in the gift shop, assisting with clerical duties, greeting guests, and facilitating children’s art projects.

To become an MFAH volunteer, first complete and submit an online application. Next, you will be invited to attend an orientation session. This important step is required for all prospective volunteers so that you can learn about the available opportunities, tour volunteer areas of the Museum, and meet the Volunteer Services Department staff.

Comfort Hospice is currently seeking Volunteers in the Greater Houston area.  We offer clerical work as well as opportunities to work alongside our patients and their families. Make a  difference in children’s lives by joining TWST4Girls fundraising committee!

Throughout the year, TWST4Girls offers underserved youth the opportunity to experience life in which they may have never dreamed. We provide life skills development, career exploration, cultural exposure, educational tours and travel all at no cost to the children or their families that we serve.

No cost to the family, however our services and programs are not always free to the organization. That is why we created a fundraising committee! Join the fundraising committee of like-minded individuals who make an impact in children’s lives by fundraising for their programming.

Fundraising Committee Team

The Fundraising Committee's job is not simply to raise money. Instead, the Fundraising Committee is responsible for working together with TWST leadership to achieve organizational goals by fostering and maintaining relationships with donors, mentors, parents and community members.

Through videos and images with #HTXCreativeActivism, share your thoughts, concerns, and wishes creatively about Social Justice. As a society, we were witnesses of intolerance and are still witnessing injustice against different communities; this concerns religious, gender, class, or race-based groups.

We firmly believe that injustice should not be just recognized but be addressed and systematically stopped. But how can it be done constructively? If it concerns the rights of diverse religious, cultural, racial, or LGBTQ communities, it is essential to have a dialog and find ways to address such critical issues. We can't give just a statement because the time requires it but should be able to openly discuss difficult issues such as Social Justice and serve as a platform to provide healthy ways to address our community's and societies' issues. 

As part of a beautiful and diverse community, we wish to allow everyone to voice their feelings of structural injustice. Today's technological development and possibilities of communication should be used to build a healthy public. We wish to help our growing community with creative methods to process these difficult subjects that are finally openly addressed.

Duties of TWST4Girls' Chief Operating Officer

Planning

Nonprofit COO is part of the executive management team and participates in long-term strategic planning meetings. While the Executive Director and board of directors develop broad mission-oriented goals and objectives, the executive management team helps develop the operating strategies to attain those goals. In these meetings, the COO will provide detailed information to team members regarding the performance capabilities of each department, which she has learned through regular meetings with department heads. 

Monitoring

A nonprofit COO works with individual department heads to monitor their work, not only ensuring each function stays on track to meet its goals, but also making sure each department understands its role in relation to the other departments and the nonprofit’s mission. For example, if the marketing, development and human resources all needed the IT department’s help on projects, the COO would make the call as to which department IT would help first. 

Financial Responsibilities 

The COO would work with each department head and the ED to understand needs and look for solutions during a budget crunch, but would make the final determination regarding issues such as which department gets a new computer and which gets an additional staff member. 

Human Resources 

Works with human resources or ED to ensure the organization meets it staffing needs, including developing plans to maximize volunteer help. Knowing the organization’s personnel capabilities, the COO can determine which projects the organization can pursue, making more effective decisions regarding the operations of different departments. The COO, rather than the ED, might make the final call on hiring, disciplining or terminating certain Directors.

Director of Communications: Highly important role and considered the foundation of TWST4Girls. The Director of Communications is considered one of the faces of TWST4Girls and may serve as the key Spokesperson and media contact.

Help around the ALS Association Texas Chapter Houston office with post event organization.

 We are looking for someone that is experienced and passionate about keeping things in "tax top shape".  The person to support in this area should be well versed on tax law for nonprofit organizations. Time commitment is about 5-10 hours monthly. Some months it may be less. 

We are looking for energetic and passionate tutors with a sense of humor and warmth, and love working with children, their families as well as connecting easily with students, teachers, and parents. 

Potential tutors would work with students 1st-12th grade. The role would consist of:

1. supporting students to make informed academic (Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies) and life decisions (communication, relationship building, problem-solving and more);

2. guiding students through the steps of building service learning projects and business plan ideas; 

3. meet with students once a week to check progress;

4. report to administrator with progress reports;

5. adhere to the safety and professional guidelines of the organization and

6. dedicate 8-12 hours monthly ( at least 4 hours weekly) Monday-Thursday 

7. commit to the time frame of the programs: Summer (June - August) Fall (September - December) Spring (January - May) We know life happens, so flexibility is key to being successful in this role.

As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to give back while working in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our volunteers tell us working at our Shop is meaningful and rewarding, because they know with each item sold, all proceeds go into directly helping the women of our Home. We are open Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. Volunteer hours can be flexible, but we do ask that you make an on-going commitment.

Since it is the blood already on the shelves that saves lives, maintaining a sufficient blood supply is essential to ensure patients in need to receive treatment. Incorporated Mentoring Program of Houston helps to empower young men in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. The mentoring program uses adult volunteers to commit to supporting, guiding, and being a friend to a young man for a period of at least one year. By becoming part of the social network of adults and community members who care about the youth, the mentor can help youth develop and reach positive academic, career, and personal goals.

The Women's Home's Cottage Shop needs your help! We are in great need of volunteers help us sift, sort and stock our clothing and general donations into our Cottage Shop. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to give back while working in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our volunteers tell us working at our Shop is meaningful and rewarding, because they know with each item sold, all proceeds go into directly helping the women of our Home. We are open Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4pm. Volunteer hours can be flexible, but we do ask that you make an on-going commitment.

2 Shifts available: 8-11am and 10-1pm

For the safety of volunteers,Lord of the Street will provide all necessary PPE. Including gloves, masks, hand sanitizer. (LOTS) adheres to all local, state, national  health protocols during Covid crisis, including social distancing.

The area where volunteers work is a secluded area on the second floor away from pedestrian traffic. (LOTS) is in need of volunteers with personal transportation i.e Pick up Trucks, Vans, SUV. 

In general volunteers are needed to sort, package and deliver clothing to the Good Will (on Westheimer located 2.3 miles from the facility). (LOTS) has received an abundance of clothes that were donated to this organization.

More specifically the volunteers task will include sorting clothes according to size, gender, place them in a bags, deliver to (GW). Four volunteers are needed, (2) per shift,the shifts are (2) hours long.

 Volunteers will alternate work days, Monday - Friday( 12:30 noon - 2:30 pm ). (LOTS) will accommodate or arrange parking, proof of insurance and valid drivers license is required. As (LOTS) will not assume any liability due to any injury or damage cause by traffic accident.

Everyone is invited to attend the JJPV monthly program and meeting at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of every month (except July, August, and December or if the day falls on a holiday). Come enjoy a presentation by a guest speaker and learn about all the upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities at Jesse Jones Park.

Families are welcome. Individuals under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.

A standard, adult-sized mask, with soft ear loops, is recommended. We will need to have them in small bags, to ease distribution. If you prefer to bring them to us, ready to be sent out, please include bagging them, individually, in a bag that lays flat during transport (a sandwich sized baggie – either paper or plastic – should be perfect. Target sells some paper ones that are biodegradable). Feel free to get creative with cute designs, so long as we steer clear of any religious or political messaging. We serve a broad audience, so we recommend keeping it to inclusive and happy things. If you’re unsure, solid colors or striped/paisley/gingham patters are always a safe bet.

General Description of needs

Volunteers Needed For:

-Coaching teams of male and female 

-working with youth from ages 7-15 

-holding practices on Saturdays that games aren't played 

-from the hrs of 7am for set up to 12pm for taking down equipment or longer 

-refs are also needed to keep score and make sure a fair game is being held 

-must be willing to undergo a background check 

We have a special program that allows household groups to work together separated from other volunteers and staff to help with them parks most urgent needs. That includes picking up trash, weeding, removing silt, cleaning the trail lights and other projects. 

With COVID-19, we do require masks be brought with you and worn when in close quarters. Most of the projects will not require them to be worn while working. We select projects that require little or no interaction with our staff providing you a safe outdoor volunteer activity,

We will have non-latex disposable gloves available. You may bring your own gardening gloves. 

We generally meet at the end of the parking lot at 105 Sabine St. Depending on where we will be in the park, that may change. This program runs on Wednesday through Friday of most weeks. We check in at 8:30 and generally go to 11:30 am, but are flexible if you prefer to work a shorter shift. Please complete the form letting us know for which date you'd like to help out. 

Each person will also need to complete our online waiver.

Clothed By Faith has volunteer opportunities for sorting donations and filling Client clothing requests.

We are in need of volunteers to help kids from grades 1st to 6th with their homework assignments from 3pm-4pm and clubs from 4pm-5pm.  The clubs include: Art, Crafts, Robotics, Science, Music, Cooking, and Chess.  If you enjoy being with kids and helping them learn a new skill, this is the place for you!

Open Gate has remained open during this pandemic, but we’ve had to change how we are serving our homeless youth.  We are unable to serve sit down meals as we used to, but we continue to serve nutritious meals on Sundays from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM on a carry out/to-go basis. 

During the height of the lockdown when many of our youth were locked into shelters, we continued to serve about 25 meals each Sunday to the truly homeless.  We are now averaging about 45 to-go meals served each of the last three or four Sundays.  We are observing social distancing by limiting the number of youth allowed inside at a time, scanning them for fever with a non-contact thermometer prior to entry, and providing fresh socks and underwear in addition to the meal.  No one is allowed to remain inside.  While the clothing closet is not officially open, we do provide shirts and trousers where desperately needed.  We also offer masks, hand sanitizer in small bottles, hygiene packs, and plenty of cold water bottles to help beat the heat. 

We are offering these services to the youth with a minimum number of volunteers (4 to 5 max) to maximize social distancing protection for the volunteers and the participants.  While we realize that many volunteers are being socially responsible and staying home, if you’d like to volunteer, we’d love to see you on a Sunday.  We also occasionally have opportunities to volunteer on a Saturday or during the week when only volunteers would be present. 

Volunteers are an essential part of the success of Seasons Hospice. Hospice cares for patients and their caregivers in the Houston and Pasadena area, bringing quality and compassion to end-of-life patients. Trained volunteers visit patients' homes, nursing homes, & assisted living facilities. They provide companionship & support to our patients, help with errands and provide relief for caregivers.

After our students finish the high school program of Higher Up Texas, they move into HUT Phase 2. Here, we provide support via group virtual meetings, one on one check ins, mailed care packages, letters of encouragement, and any resources needed to help answer questions and find solutions towards reaching career goals. 

Our HUG-A-HUT is a box of care items that you can send in the mail and the student will receive it. Items can include candy, tea, candle, journal, motivational book, crossword books, coloring books, fast food gift card, and most importantly- a note of encouragement. Things to help ease their minds and feel comforted as they begin life after high school! 

HUG-A-HUT is a socially distanced way to share the love to a student needing some encouragement in life!

Travel Unity, a nonprofit focused on increasing diversity in the world of travel, is seeking people ages 13+ to join its Youth Advisory Council. Applicants from all backgrounds and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply!

Youth Advisory Council members will work with one another and Travel Unity's staff, Board, and Advisors on Travel Unity's programs and mission.

Travel Unity is seeking a volunteer Youth Advisory Council Coordinator to work with staff, volunteers, and our Travel Unity Youth Advisory Council (TUYAC) members on youth-related programming. Volunteers from all backgrounds and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply!

Youth Advisory Council Coordinators will work with a team of other Youth Advisory Council Coordinator and the Youth Programs Manager on virtual TUYAC events and programming and, when appropriate, in-person events.

Volunteers must have prior experience working with high-school age youth and must be able to work on a team basis, communicate regularly, be proficient with meeting programs (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.), and enjoy the excitement of collaborative output.

TUYAC Coordinators are responsible for:

*Recruiting and onboarding new members in coordination with other TUYAC Coordinators, as well as Youth Services and Nonprofit Partnership Managers
*Managing weekly hour-long virtual TUYAC meetings
*Tracking attendance
*Working with Travel Unity staff to coordinate guests for weekly meeting and other TUYAC events

We are trying to compile good articles on Organic Horticulture to have a great library on our site. Many of our BOD members have offered us their articles, but we need to track it down and get it into a usable format.

ED also needs help with content creation.

Target Hunger is ramping up food distributions to ensure our neighbors receive much needed food. Many people have lost fridges full of food due to power outages, have limited water, and now have unexpected expenses due to broken pipes and other damage.

Museum Guides are the ambassadors of the Heritage Society. They welcome and direct museum visitors and provide information regarding both permanent and changing exhibits. You’ll learn a variety of historical information as our temporary exhibits change three to four times a year. Our permanent exhibits include the Duncan General Store and the Ford Model-T.

Nonprofit organization that provides small grants, Owlet Smart Socks, urns, and more to families diagnosed with sometimes fatal birth defect, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Advisory Board Members will assist with fundraising, engaging with, and supporting members on all of our groups and pages.
